I think you can definitely do it yourself. Not sure about v-drives, but on a DD, it's fairly simple. Give Discount Inboard Marine a call, and they should be able to direct you to the right size 803-345-0996 www.skidim.com.

For direct drives 1/4" packing is used, and on the V drives 3/16" packing is used. Brian Raymond

Very easy to do.....don't waste your money in having a dealer do it.
