You need a marine

Marine alt are spark suppresed they deal with cumbustable gases better without going boom.

Im in the same boat, I am in need of a new altenator for my '87 Saltare which has the 454. I plan on running two batteries, one to start and one to run the lights/stereo. Any ideas on which alt would be the best?

dbelectrical sells some good marine starters. I've got one of their large ones and it's run without issue on my 454 for years. It is a 1-wire model and I think mine is in the 160-180amp range.

My 86 comp came with a 35 amp stock, after fighting dead batters for 3 years I installed a 65 amp. I should have went with higher out put 80 amp min

DB Electrical is where I got mine last year - no fuss, no muss. Gotta go with the marine so things don't go boom like 86 Century said.
