Hi,

I'm new to inboard boats having owned a sterndrive for many years and I have been looking at a couple of models; Tige, Supra and MB in the 04-06 range. Specifically the Supra I was looking at is a 2004 22SSV Launch, my concern with this boat is the beam and gunwhale height. The beam seems a bit narrow at 96" and I can not seem to find any specs on what the gunwhale height is. Do people feel this is to narrow wishing they had gotten a newer model on a 100" beam. Also, how does this boat handle in rough conditions and any safety concerns having young kids aboard? We just want to make the best educated decision possible given the three boats we are looking at.

Thanks

In 2004 I think you are going to find most boats are similar in comparison. They had narrower beams for sure. The 2004 is one of the nicest looking boats on the water, with the low profile and all, but you are right it will have lower freeboard. It will create an awesome wake and you can add lots of ballast to the factory system. You do eliminate much of your storage though. That was just a simple fact of what was available in 2004. Most ski/wake boats will not give you a great rough water ride that you might find in your old stern drive. You might step up one year to 2005 when Supra came out with the 21V. Very deep freeboard, lots of storage and the inside is still similar in size.
Either way that old 22SSV is still one of my favorite boats from that era...
What is your budget?

We would like to keep it in the $30-35k range, which I know may be harder to do on an 05+ boat. It seems like from looking around they tend to take a bit of a jump from that year forward. I have ridden in and behind an 04 Tige' and we really liked how it handled the rougher water, the deeper freeboard and the wide beam. On the other hand, I really like the looks, layout and capabilities of the Supra.

Look for an 05-06 Supra 21V. It will have a much higher freeboard and handle deep water well. You should be able to get that into your price range.
Where are you located?

Thanks, I will look for a 21v. We are located in Seattle.

The '05 21v is one of the best hulls Supra has ever made, really peaky wake with an abrupt transition, just how I like it (even compared to my 24SSV). The 22v went for a revamp in 2007 I think? Prior to that it did have a lower freeboard and shorter beam than the 21 and 24's. The 21v will take a ton of weight too. Diggs is the authority on 21v's so if you have a good resource close to you.
