i've seen your posts on wb, i can only imagine the frustration...sorry to hear it

you might get some more technical help at www.inboardboats.com. they have an inboard section with some real gear heads reading.

good luck!

hey man.... just saw this thread... the guys over on wakeboarder.com have been helpful. the engine is out and in a million pieces right now.

It'll be all back together this week and hopefully good as new.

hey guys.... what do your boats run at rpm wise on the top end? Mine runs well over 5000rpms and I'm being told that's totally bad..... !!!

That is probably too fast. What year, make, and model are your powerplant? Early 90's PCM 351s should top out about 4400. You are probably underpropped.

88 pcm 454 with an acme 541 -- several others on this board run the same thing and I don't think they run such high rpms -- I'm really confused!

i'm running the same setup, 87 454 and mine tops out around 4600.

are you getting any additional torque above the 4400 to 4600 range?

i saw your prop slip thread and played around with the calculator, got the same 35% slip you did but i don't think my prop really slips THAT much.

what kind of hole shot are you getting? seems like it should be terrible if it'll run up to 5k rpms...

she's all back together now?

Yeah -- there's some torque above 5000 rpms, but it really has more noise then go. My whole-shot seems ok, but I really have nothing to compare it to.

The whole thing is still apart, but I'm making progress -- I've got the boxwrench DVD on order to help with reassembly procedures, dropped the heads off at the machine shop today, and ordered a new cam, lifters, and oil pump. It's just going to be a matter of cleaning everything really well, putting them back together and then finding an engine hoist high/long enough to drop it into the boat.

Salty -- saw a picture of your boat and I love that tower/top combo that you have. I've got a completely ghetto fab tower/top and I'll post some pictures as soon as the beast awakens again.

oh... and another thing..... when I turn my transmission -- I get about 7/8 of a turn on the output when I do a full turn on the input. The tranny is stamped 1:1 and has a model number of 10 18 002 -- anyone know what this means?

I'm just going to keep answering my own questions -- I haven't checked my transmission yet, but the book says it should be 1:1.10 for reverse, so I bet I was just spinning the disc backwards.
