View Full Version : Coolest tow vehicles!

I saw this picture today. This is our friend Greg, you know the guy that promotes all the Wake the World events? Apparently he's got a new tow vehicle this year, and after seeing it I thought it might be fun to start a thread showing pics of some of the best looking rigs out there - you know, combination of boat and tow vehicle. This is cool . . . .

That one wins hands down.

A 72 chevy blazer only thing I dont like is the color but its not mine.

You would haft to start this out with the coolest body style of truck ever made.

I used to tow the Mariah with this on fun days. I don't think it would like the tongue weight of the Saltare though.

This one is special. It not only tows a Supra, it's powered by one. Top that. :D Motor out of my old 1989 Supra Comp TS6m lives, and is a beast!

Towing with a lifted cj you are a brave man.

I would gess the full width axles and 3/4 brakes would help alot.

I stopped working on this (1958 Chevrolet Apache) to start on the boat. Maybe when the boat is done, I'll put a hide-a-hitch on this and upgrade the bags in the rear so I can tow the boat with it. Guess that means the color scheme I had picked out for the boat might have to change so they can match :)

Not going to lie, with it set up like I have it that motor is just plain amazing! I'll get people on the trail all the time asking what motor is in it. When I tell them it's a 351w they are really surprised. With all the new big FI motors being put in crawlers, and the sound of this one is DEEP. When I tell them the motor came from a Ski boat, they are normally cracking up and call BS until I pop the hood. That's always fun to watch their expression to read PCM Marine Power on the valve covers.

That jeep pic is sawweettt.

Thanks man. I'm loving the all black truck. I'm normally a Ford man, but that truck is awesome. I'd rock that bad boy.

14-bolt rear end with 4-wheel disc brakes. Tows like a champ. But since I mounted my rock crawler bumper flush with the back end, the hitch does sit a weeee bit high. Even with a drop hitch it looks silly.

03-24-2012, 09:11 AM
Thanks! Those trucks are over a span of about 6 years. Started with the blue 1/2 ton, then up from there. I do prefer the GM's over the Fords, but that's just personal preference, especially with the newer trucks. That Ford was horrible. Solid front axle, 38's, stiff springs.... My wife and I drug our boat down to Nashville to Haugyland with the F-250 1 year when she was pregnant, bad idea :(

Yes, but the storage is up in Florence. The unit is a 10'x30'. With the swim platform and non-folding trailer tongue, a 25' long unit just wasn't quite long enough.

Unfortunately storage that size in Birmingham isn't going to come cheap. You might look at the costs of having it dry stored at lake martin or smith lake if you plan on sticking to one lake.

That's funny (FPG)... Not really to bad empty about 13-14. Pulling pretty much any load from boat to buggies its around 10.. so not to bad for how big it is. I have a 100gal aux tank so i can make some distance without stopping but filling it up makes me want to cry.

Thinking of staying era correct and towing the 1989 pirata with my 1990 Dodge dakota.
Bought the dakota for $300 a month or so ago. Just used it to move the boat to the garage
so I could get busy and be close to the tools.

This brings up a good point and I know this is getting off "Coolest Tow Vehicles", I tow with a full size GM and have an 8" drop hitch. My trailer sits at just slightly angled UP (See attached image).

Are you guys that tow with Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Escalades using a 10" drop hitch to provide more clearance in the back and easier on /off?

Your trailer looks dead level, which you want. Are you wanting it higher in the rear so it doesn't drag? Or lower at the front of the trailer so it's easier to get on and off the hitch? I don't think I understood your question.

jet
05-02-2012, 10:15 AM
Yeah bigcity. It needs to drop 1-2 more inches and you will be good and you wont drag as much. A single axle trailer tows the best just below level.

Not the best pic, but you get the idea. 05 Chevy Express 2500 Explorer Conversion, 6.0l, 4.10 rear end, regular wheel base with cargo doors on both sides. I can't believe I found it back in 08 when I was looking. Almost all GM 2500 or 3500 vans (after 2000 I think it is) are the longer wheel base and do not have the drivers side cargo doors. I did not think I needed them as my previous van (97 GMC Savanna) did not have them. Man was I wrong. I will never have another van without them. Pulls great, rides like a truck. I guess cause it is a truck with fancy seats. Just over 100k this month. Pulled my 10k lb camper through the smokies last summer without any issues. I had never done that so I was a little paranoid and installed an aftermarket transmission pan, temp guage, and used full synthetic fluid as well as water wetter in the radiator. There were only two big climbs where I had to watch the temps and be concerned.

Good thing is it tows the little Supra like it's a pop up camper, it gets decent mileage doing it, it's still going strong at almost 300k miles and it hasn't had a payment in a long time. Need to get it painted sometime. Been working on a '66 Dodge A100 pickup for a bunch of years but I doubt it will replace Big Ugly for towing duties.

Well that's certainly a lot more positive than I expected, pretty cool all. Yeah I was thinking about doing a paint scheme that would go with the '42. And the red is a lot better on it than the truck. Don't get me wrong I like my old truck, it does a great job and just rattles along. It has a 4" exhaust, the 5" had a drone I couldn't get rid of. It has +150hp injectors and an Edge comp fuel box. So when needed, it will really haul!

Thanks again, now to figure out a complimentary paint layout.

You wouldn't even be close! Here's how my evolution has gone in the last year....

1993 Ford F250. Nickname: Big Damage. Rusty but trusty (sometimes.) Beaten with the ugly stick HARD. No locker, 2wd, loved to get stuck on wet ramps.
http://i635.photobucket.com/albums/uu79/rbosworth/20120803_142656.jpg

Then I bought this to build a "custom" tow rig. Since I only tow ~1 mile in each direction and less than 30mph... I figured this one would be up to the task.
1948 Chevy Thriftmaster. Nickname: Old Damage. Rusty and untrusty. 216 straight 6. Dually rear wheels. HUGE drum brakes. Took forever to get going, took forever to turn, gears clanked and without power steering or brakes it was a nightmare to drive. Never actually attempted to tow with it after just trying to get it hooked up to the boat proved incredibly difficult.

I'm really curious to see how this will work. I looked at several Broncos before buying my F250 and basically decided that the wheelbase was too short to tow that much weight. I know that your 21v is probably worlds lighter than my Saltare... but... still curious how this will work.

Having owned both a 1996 and a 1971 i can tell you that the 96 would do just fine but i wouldn't tow any distance with the 71. It's just to light and very very short. But damn it would look good.

I would just love to see an early model Bronco ( painted red / black ) tow the Supra. We only tow about 2 miles to the lake, but it would be a fun vehicle to truck to the lake in that short distance. Take the doors off, grab the cooler out of the back. . okay now I'm dreaming about it. . .

Long hauls to other lakes and Supra Reunions would definitley be the Denali.

Part of me is tempted to try my Jeep for a SHORT jaunt... It does have the 4.0L inline 6 with front and rear discs with the fronts upgraded from a Grand Cherokee. Has a Dana 44 rear end with chromoly shafts and a high pinion Dana 30 front with high pinion shafts... For the ramp, the front and rear air lockers and the 3.8 Atlas Transfer case with 4.10 gears on the Auto tranny would certainly help. Hell, I could hook up to something with the 9000 pound winch if need be! But the wheelbase is always the concern with Jeep's...

Your XJ should be able to pull that Supra fine as long as you aren't hauling it long distances. For around town it will be fine, just plan ahead and don't try to rush. But with that single axle trailer you will be very tongue heavy and you will certainly feel every bump. :D

That's a lot of weight for that TJ man. Even with the lockers and the 44, if it's a 5-speed you could cause the clutch to strain itself pretty bad. I know mine can tow my boat as I've towed rigs 3 times my size. But that's a buttload of tongue weight. I know I'd be squatting on the bumpstops with that big pig.

It's actually an Auto. Yeah, it'd be a last resort for sure. But ironic how the XJ has a 5000 pound tow rating and I've got the same or stronger powertrain on my TJ now, so it's really just wheelbase...

I took the boat out last week and the wife was unavailable with her truck. I grabbed a friend with an old fullsize and had him tow for me. :-)

I did back in the day take my buddy's boat out for a day towing it about 15 miles each way with my 5-speed YJ though... It was a bit of the tail wagging the dog. ;-)

Yeah maybe I'll give it a shot. I'm in trade talks with a guy for a full size silverado lifted on 35's... and it's blue to match the boat. We'll see what happens there. My MC's trailer doesn't have brakes, that's the worst thing about it. That boat is only 2200 lbs dry with another 7-800 for the trailer though. I towed it down to table rock lake from KC (about 4 hours) and it did fine towing it until I got close to the lake with all the hills around the lake. I lost my brakes on the way down a hill and had to jam the jeep into 4 low to keep my speed down. That was scary.

I store it on the trailer in the winter but mid-season if it has to come out, this is the vehicle of choice.

With the trailer, we use a little diesel tractor with a ball in place of the bucket, best way to maneuver a trailer, ever.

Kid that works for me in the summers and goes boarding with us also just got his truck from having leveling kit added and 35s put on his Toyota. Helps to have a dad that is a doctor.
But I think he will be towing some this year.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/06/uzeryheh.jpgWe only tow the boat a few times a year, so this gets the job done. It is a long rig but we can move a lot of stuff and people.

OK. Since I started this thread I thought I'd better contribute, even after Diggs put us all to shame. :p

First pic is my old '93 GMC with my Sunsport prior to rebuild. Second pic is my "new" '05 Chevy that I tow with now.

I really wanted an old 351w blazer, but most of the ones I could find around here are seriously mistreated, and a "real" truck is just a lot more useful. That right there is ~$3000 worth of 1995 chevy 350, with every option (aside from 4wd :| )

My two old girls. Sadly the Duramax is out of commission with a major engine issue. Lucky the little girl has a supercharger under the hood :)

DAFF - That is sweet!
I just picked up a new rig, but don't think it is going to tow unless I put a 350 in it....

I would look into a 4 cyl Cummins conversion before the 350 Chevy. Loads of pulling power and fuel efficient !!

I was on a Formula 400SS yesterday and learned that with it's twin Volvo 6-cylinder diesels it was only burning 8 gallons/hour and we were running at 46MPH. I was amazed!

Diggs -- Did the Toyota replace the Hummer?

Diggs

Wotan - Yep Hummer went to the Netherlands!!
DAFF - Most likely won't do any engine swaps, but who knows in the future further...
