Supra Comp Mufflers?

Anybody know what the black boxes in the exhaust, under the gas tank, just before the thru hull are on an '89 Supra Comp? Are they resonators? Do they decrease the sound at all?

I was wondering if replacing them with some small mufflers would quiet down the boat.
