1984 Stuck in forward

I have an '84. The transmission started slipping and by the time I got back to the dock was overheating. I added fluid but it is now stuck in forward as soon as the engine is started. Even with the safety interlock pulled it stays in forward. Any suggestions?

Is the shifter on the transmission moving? Even if it is, try disconnecting the cable and moving the shift lever by hand.

The shifter is moving. Definately something in the transmission. Thanks for the reply.
