View Full Version : Adding the "rainbow" stripe back to my boat

When I bought my boat over a year ago, the prior owner had taken the stripe off. I have been thinking about adding it back, but can't really seem to find a great place to purchase it from. I would think that Supra still had that logo and stripe right? Or will I need to go to my local shop and have them create one? Thanks

They dont make them anymore, but you can go to your local vinyl shop and have them made for a decent price, as for the stripes my guy had to hand cut and lay em to fit factory1056810569

Yah I wasn't wanting to spend a huge amount of money on these. I have no idea what would be a good price, but anything over 3 or 400....is outta the question.

I've heard around $50 a wave, mine cost 800 for stripes and the wave. You could always buy the striping and lay it down yourself, that would prob run you around 2-300

Looks great! Thanks for keeping it original. I haven't seen the wave with the blue on white quite like that. Worth every dollar of the $800 you spent!!!!
Thanks, In my opinion there is no other way than to keep it original, the wave was actually suppose to be white with the blue outline but he messed up, no worries though cause I like the mess up

Yeah I'm going to have to go custom. I love the stripes and wave, but hate the rainbow scheme on my black boat. I plan on doing a gray/black/white combo of stripe and Wave to match.

I too love the original rainbow but unless the boat is 99% original then why not make it a little more modern keeping to the classic heritage... Wiatoski did a great job on his SS with the chrome plus he didn't break the bank.

No doubt about it, the Supra wave is a timeless classic. However my Salt's nowhere near original anymore, so I'm staying nekked for now (I kinda like the puzzling looks received on the few outings so far). Although, I'll be watching closely to see what Haugy comes up with for my boat's sister...

I liked the rainbow stripes on my old Mariah, but they were toast, and were on the last of my list of to TO-DO's to get it back to 100% factory. But i just can't do it to Black Beauty. She didn't look bad like that, but man......I think I can do better. *EDIT* Although, looking at the original stripes, I do love that factory original look. DAMN, now I'm torn!

1057510576Well after reading more comments and looking at others I think I am going to go with a custom rainbow theme of some sort. I know its going to cost me $, but I think I will be happier. My boat has dark blue under and above the rub rail, so I am going to make the stripes include these colors. I will keep you updated on what I find and the cost. Thanks

I think your black grey theme would be cool with a updated look, if you went with the original wave and stripe design I would keep it the original colors, I think the black grey would look good but not on the original design but a more updated design. I like it more without the stripes tbh it looks stealthy and hard to tell what type of boat it actually is for others on the lake. I know my opinion doesnt matter, just a thought. EDIT: After thinking about it for 5 seconds I think if you did a thin dark electric blue line like the supra impulse, and did the wave with the thin line kind of cursive like how the word impulse was done, I think it would look pretty bada$$.

^^^ Very true and well put.

As for the wave and stripe combo I would play with colours and simple designs. I look at all the black and invision a black reflective stripe the same dimensions as the original with a thin grey 1/4" border to inhance the pop. Would look stellar at night will all the blue on the inside and the glow from the stripe down the side.

Plus make the trailer match....

Haugy, I like the original pics with the rainbow and it does pop a bit, but in this case, I would go with a new look like you're thinking about. Having said that, (if I'm being dead honest) I haven't seen too many stripes/ waves that have be re-done or re-designed on this forum for that "updated" look that have surpassed the quality of the original design and colors. I guess I've never said to myself...OMG, that is sooo much better than the original how come Supra didn't think of that?
If it is Plain vs. Stripe, I'm going with stripe every time. The Saltare is a large boat and I think it needs something to break all that solid color up. You're creative, I'm sure whatever you come up with will be perfect. With the wave becoming extinct, I like the small fraternity I'm in with other owners who have kept it.

Yeah, I agree, on many boats the stripe really does look great on it. The ones on mine were mutilated to hell and back, and no wave. So they were coming off regardless. But when I look at it, I can't bring myself to put the rainbow back on. Something like a combo of black/white/gray with maybe some red accent pin stripes might really help set it off.

Now that's an interesting idea. That could look cool. The blue is going away next year for red (I say that), because the blue is so bright it attracts every bug within a 2 mile radius. :D But the very faint reflective idea could be very cool.......hmmmmmmm

Suprasam -

To give you an idea of what your boat might look like with the factory stripes, here's a pic of mine before I changed it. The rainbow stripes are original but the lettering on the stripes is not as I replaced it in this pic . I purchased the light blue wave to match the thin light blue stripe at the bottom of the rainbow. The Supra logo on the transom is not original. I still like the look with the stripes and wave though . . Since your boat is primarily white on the side like mine, I thought this pic might help you decide.

I like that look you have/had csuggs, I think a Navy thin stripe, the red, and orange might look good on mine. I need to mess around with it, then a navy wave. The red and orange would pop with the navy that is now on my boat. Thanks

This is my side stripe (original) with a new wave, I did that in 2009. I have a roll of the "rainbow" stripe for my boat that I think may be the last Supra factory rainbow stripe in the world still on a roll. I use it to replace damaged sections. Anyway I like the factory look, it's very 1989, but doesn't look cheesy in my opinion.

Squaminboards....you have a roll? OK here is teh deal stop damage your stripes, and sell me that roll. Plain an simple! Ha......well the only thing I can find right now is Im having to do each line seperate, I was hoping to do it all in one shot. Oh well, I knew it wouldnt be easy!!!!!

Actually, I bet a company could print all 4 colors on a roll pretty easily for you. That would save you the headache of having to line them up all the way down the boat. The problems is the taper at the bow where the stripes go narrow.

Sorry we hijacked it by the way.

Alright, if I'm hijacking your thread let me know. But figured this was along the same lines.

I made some Photoshop mockups, with some color options, please take a look and let me hear your thoughts. First the waves:

Sloppy mockups as a I said,

Here are those waves on the boat. The stripes I add, would match the waves color scheme.

I like the white outline - seems to help it "pop" a bit while still blending with the white on the hull. I think the red outline starts to get busy, introducing a 4th color (unless you were to add some red somewhere else on the hull or interior). Regardless, they all look sharp. Now, I'll have to reconsider staying nekked...

Wiatowski, that looks awesome! Great layout.

Where did you get the wave? And what font is the "Supra" in? I'd love to do a small stripe like that, but since the PO had the boat painted, and never removed the original stripes, there is now a depth gap. You can see gelcoat where the stripes were. So I have to get a big stripe. I do like the black on black. Here is a black with white outline. I'm going to go make a black with dark gray outline.

Well fawk. Photoshop won't do the files.

Haugy, I personally like the dark grey, on the black with maybe a thin white outline. You boat was painted by the PO? How is that holding up with scratches and stuff? I ask because my above rubrail and right below are painted and its working out well, but I have seen some where they are showing scars!

It's actually holding up surprisingly well. But the paint job was not done well. There is the faintest bit of orange peel. I CAN'T FRIGGING STAND IT!!!!!!! My Mariah I had the gelcoat so shiny and smooth it was amazing. Looking at the black on this boat is a real sore spot with me. If I rebuild the stringers, you can bet I'm stripping that paint and re-gelcoating the hull.

My problem is, I don't know what they did for prep work. Did they sand down the gelcoat, do anything? If I knew I'd remove the paint now if I knew I could restore the gel. But I don't know what they did, and the paint is not as thick as I'd prefer for this kind of boat. Which is why I'm trying to at least cover up the gelcoat to paint gap where the stripes were.

I've thought about it. But for the money, I'd rather just stripe it and put the wave on it. Then just learn to deal with it. It's not terrible, most would say I'm insane and it's fine. But you know me.

Had my sign lady make it for me... I just gave her the dimensions and a an eps file... (not to sure what it is but she was able to use it to do the wave) If any one needs it I'd be more than happy to send it to them Just PM me. The Font is " GOOD TIMES RG" she used forward and reverse italics so the letters would all slope with the wave. Took me about 20 mins to put everything on... getting the water line right was the hardest. I used painters tape down both sides for the bottom of the water line and then put the stripe on the top edge of the tape.... worked out pretty good... but you really need two people for the stripe. one to hold the tape out the length of the boat (my dear wife) and one to put it on.
I personally wouldn't worry about where the stripes use to be cause once you put something on there that's what will stand out, unless your sanding a foot away from it, and lets face it most people view a boat from a distance. I liked Daff's idea of reflective black... think it definitely would look cool. The stripe I used was 1/2" just in case anyone was wondering.
