View Full Version : thermostat
Anyone one having problems with the thermostat sticking. I have a 05" 21v 340hp and the thermostat was replaced at 10 hours due to sticking and now again at 37 hours it is sticking again wide open causing the engine to run between 125-135F instead of 180F that it normally runs.

Better to stick open than closed and end up with a blown head gasket or worse. Seriously, that is pretty peculiar. A thermostat isnt excatly a complex piece. Maybe just a bad run of parts from the supplier. I'm assuming this was covered under warranty. If not, and it happens again, you might try another source for a new one, perhaps discount inboard marine at http://www.skidim.com .

Found out that they did not replace it the first time they only removed and cleaned the original one. Should not be an issue now with the new one installed.

As cheap as a new thermostat is I can't believe they'd try to clean it and not just replace it if it was stuck.

No kidding. A $20 part that can lead to 5K in repairs if it decides to stick closed next time an you don't catch it. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with whoever was working on your boat, but personally, if it were me I'd look elsewhere the next time.
They did not have one in stock at the time and I really wanted the boat back that day to hit the lake last year. They thought maybe just a small metal casting or debris from the block may have been the problem and of course I did not see a reoccurance for over 20 hours. They really are good guys to deal with so I will not hold it against them that I wanted my boat back that day. I have had it out twice since the replacement and all is good.
So why could this be bad? I've actually never had a thermostat in my boat and just assumed too cool was better than too hot.

I understand that not everyone is mechanically minded or capable, certainly not anything against those type of people... I feel strongly that with the way marinas are run... its in everyones best interest to take the time to learn how to replace the simple things. If your having diagnostic issues, by all means take the boat in... but replacing thermostats, impellars, hoses... the obvious stuff will save you a ton of $$ not to mention the turn around time in getting back on the water. I think that oil changes are one of the biggest rip offs these days. With your automobile you pay the $25 because its easier than dealing with the mess... once you get up around $100... I'll get messy!! Take the time to get to know your investment... It will make it that much more enjoyable. If you have money to throw away....

I agree with you, just not the part of throwing money your way. Just like the thermostat I was not towing my boat to them for the day when for $8.00 and 20 minutes of my time I had the thermostat replaced. I found out about the $100 oil change when I took it in at 10 hrs for service and to have perfect pass installed. I figured if it was under warranty let them fix it. Since then I purchaced and air powered oil extractor for my own oil changes. Another example was they wanted $500 to install the heater, and for $50 for two hole saws and 3 hours of my time I was up and running. After looking at it the perfect pass would not have been a problem either, but like all things in life we are all here to make money.
