Hi Guys,
As I can't work on my boat because of winter, I would like to share this tutorial on how to build your own tower speakers.
I already gave all those informations in my boat's post, but it will be easier to find it in the audio/video section.

So, I started to draw it on autocad (DWG here (http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/tower%20speaker%20final.dwg) ; DXF here (http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/tower%20speaker%20final.dxf) and PDF here (http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/tower%20speaker%20final.pdf)) and CNC it in PVC Komacel/Forex material (20mm thickness) :

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts01.jpg

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts02.jpg

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts04.jpg

Then I glued and screwed the squeletton :

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts05.JPG

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts06.JPG

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts09.JPG

Sdc77

I then stretch sleece material (to make sweatshirt), 300g/m˛ to get the final shape and staple on the top of the face (with satinless steel staple) :

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts16.JPG

Then i resin it with polyester resin. You can use epoxy, it's stronger, doesn't smell, but is more expensive.
I bondoed staple and outcrop the face.
My choice was to get someting different than painted or polished aluminium result, so i go with black vinyl, and a polished aluminium face. If you choose the same vinyl finition, becareful to use a good one, very stretchable.

Notice that I put inside the box some anti vibration material, to loud the sound and prevent from vibration noises.

Here is the result :

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/ts24.JPG

The face is a 2mm thickness aluminium that I polished with standard polishing stuff and a driller. It tooks time and patience, the aluminium needs to be taped on a wood piece.

Here is the final result :

Finishing between alu face and vinyl is black silicon

Speakers are BOSS AUDIO MARINE MR695. They do the job very well for the price, I don't regret my choice. They are powerful and sounds Hifi.
Clamps are coming from DIYwake.com

I then glued "SUPRA" in PVC material 3mm thickness

great write-up. you make it look really easy. you've got access to some cool tools. is that where you work? if so, what do you do there (job)?

speakers look great and i'm sure they sound great too. way to represent the Saltare in France!! (i hope that makes sense)

Thanks Salty. I recently meet the dealer of Supra boats in France, at the Paris boat show. He was impressed of the work done on my boat. He also validate that I have the only one Slatare in France. Few Pirata, and many Comp were sold here in 80'. And since 1 year, we can order the new models. I saw and walk in the SA350-550 at the show.

I worked in a company that make TV show's Decors (I was commercial). So they have materials like Komacel (PVC foam), wood, vinyl and the CNC machine. As I leave them in good terms, I can ask for those things.
Now I'm designer autocad in a industrial building company. I have acces here to aluminium material (The face of my speaker box, the spacer for my steering wheel), many kind of screws and some other stuff, but less than in my old comapny.

Hey guys,
A little out of the boat video, where you can hear the TSB.
The gopro had the water sealed box, so the sound is killed by it.

https://vimeo.com/75493613

Anyway you can hear that the engine sound and the speaker sound are the same level. So believe me, those cheap speakers rocks !!!
2 Years now since I built it : no issue. I'm not proud to admit it, but the boat sleeps outside in winter, and the tower doesn't have a cover, so the TSB met rain, snow and sun. Still working, and speakers still alive and powerful !
Just little bit less shine on the aluminium polished face. I will re polish it this winter.

Hi guys,
I'm about to build a new tower speaker box, with HLCD, at .... 1/5 the price of Wet sounds ;)

Here is the design :

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/HLCDproject-cutout.jpg

http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/HLCDproject-simulation.jpg

I would like to use those speakers :

Woofers : Faital Pro 8FE200 4Ohms :

http://www.teamaudio.fr/fr/faital-8fe200-4ohm.html?___from_store=en

http://www.faitalpro.com/en/products/LF_Loudspeakers/product_details/index.php?id=401030101

Horns : https://www.parts-express.com/eminence-apt-200s-90x90-1-horn-flare-1-3-8-18-tpi--290-557

Woofers will be treated with wet look, and I will build a cover for the TSB to can let it outside.

I just need a crossover to power all those things.

If anyone can help here, I'll be glad

Purpose is to get the correct Frequency Low Pass @2 Ohms/High Pass @8 Ohms + tweeter attenuation

06-08-2015, 05:32 AM
Hi carlossa,
I ordered Faital Pro 8FE200 + B&C horns here : http://www.teamaudio.fr/en/?___from_store=fr
FANE CD131 from : http://www.lautsprecherteile.de/Fane-CD-131
And parts for filters here : http://www.wilaudio.com/fr/index-wilaudio

If they don't ship to Australia, please give me link to a pro audio seller in Australia, I will try to find a good alternative speakers configuration.

I already saw that in the US you can get the Faital Pro 8FE200, but probably not the Fane CD 131. As soon as my setup is running and sounds the way it should, I will post few other systems (2 ways 4 ohm in 8" and 10", MTM 2 ways 4 Ohms in 8" and 10", MTM 2 ways 2 ohms in 8" and 10") with speakers everybody can get everywhere in the world.

The box is in place since yesterday. What a good surprise ! This thing is loud and the sound is cristal clear. We can hear it far away from 80Ft. Very good opening on the sides of the boat, clean and very audible détails. I'm proud of this setup.
I really would like to compare it to the best HLCD aftermarket speakers now.

I really would like to compare it to the best HLCD aftermarket speakers now

That would be a pair of the Wet Sounds Rev-410 https://wetsounds.com/pages/products/REV410.html

10" mid-bass drivers compared to 8" = about 50% more surface area. This yields more output and deeper mid-bass.
The Rev-410 uses a 2" compression driver
Proprietary Composite cone material over a laminated paper based cone

Ive heard just about every production HLCD out there, and nothing comes close to the Rev-410 in output and sound quality. It is at the top of the food chain.

Sdc77
07-17-2015, 08:52 AM
Yes Michael, that's the kind of thing I would like to compare my setup to.
I've designed two MTM HLCD with 2x10" + 1 compression, the system 4 and 6 you can find on my PDF :

SDC HLCD systems (http://sdch2o.free.fr/perso/bateau/supra/HLCD/HLCD%20project.pdf)

I'm absolutly sure the Rev-410 is more powerful, more clean, more durable etc. It's also 10 times more expensive ($1200 each) than my system 6 ($265 a pair).

Hope some people will be interresting in building their own HLCD based on my systems, it's so rewarding to listening it, and say "man, I built this thing and it rocks ! Can't believe it cost me ... $400 all included" :)

Unfortunatly, nobody has enough money to buy Wetsounds in France, so I only can compre to JL audio, and my HLD already better than the OEM 7.7 component mounted on Mastercraft boats ($1900 a pair), but's not difficult, it's not HLCD actually ;)

Sdc77
07-17-2015, 08:59 AM
I just took a look at your website, very cool and nice installations man ;)
I wish I could open or work in such shop, but unfortunatly, there is no "market" for it in France, Wakeboard boats are still very expensive and we don't have many sport spots here.
Most of the people wakeboarding in France go to cable parks.

I just sold my previous speaker box for 300€. A guy asked me if I can build another one, I propose 800€ for the wall thing with speakers, he sreamed !
I'm not born in the good country ;)

Hi guys !
I just get impedance curves from PRV audio (not provided in their datasheets), and founded a perfect alternative to the FANE CD131 compression (difficult to almost impossible to get in the USA) with the PRV D280Ti-B.
It should sound even better than the Fane.

So just designed system 9 and 10 for those who want to build their own low cost/HSQ HLCD speakers.

Also designed few System 1/9 arrangements on page 3, need your opinion please !

Some thoughts.

1) Is there any separation between the chambers for each of the speakers? Or is it one huge enclosure? My understanding is that while having one huge enclosure is feasible, it's preferable to have separate chambers for each.
2) I think this would look a lot better as 2 pods that have the pair of speakers with the horn in the middle. It would then look just like the WS Rev410's. The idea of having one giant long fiberglass enclosure that spans the entire tower is not in fashion anymore. and as anyone that wants to go into the boat audio market knows, FASHION is just as important as function.
3) I think that the aluminum face provides too much contrast. It makes the speaker drivers stick out too much and looks more pieced together than a finished unit. I think that a black face would mask the drivers some and make the whole unit more aesthetically pleasing.
4) what are the holes for in the center? Are they port holes? did you actually do computations for the airspace with that many drivers and the frequency that the ports would be tuned to? I really can't imagine that you have enough airspace to justify a ported enclosure and imagine sealed would sound better.

You've got great skills. more than me. But I figured you'd appreciate some constructive criticism.

Sdc77

Thanks for interrest and comments trayson. Will try to answer each point :

It is one huge enclosure. Every speakers are playing in the same volume. No need to separate them for that usage. We need high SPL, big opening, good quality. In home audio you can probably hear the difference but 80ft behind a 20MPH V8 Ski boat... we just need power and sensitivity. More speakers to the same enclosure = more SPL.

Yes the 2 holes are not just holes but ports. 50mm lengh. I did a simulation on WinISD, it's a high frequency tuning. As I high pass the tower speaker @ 125Hz, then I'm good with that setup. The Faital 8FE200 Qts brings to ported enclosure. But with that high pass frequency I could go fore sealed. Problem I met with sealed on my previous TSB : It was full of water after 1 year ! Don't know if it was bad sealing or heat condensation. With ports and black vinyl, then no more water inside. And as woofer are paper cone (for now, I have a plan...), I don't want to change them every season.

I could go for 2 separate cans, but it's twice more building time, more clamps etc. I choose that setup (1 big speaker) for cost AND fashion as I found it nicer than bullets. You will find bullets on any wake boat. But big speaker no. It's a way to stand out.

Aluminum face is also my personal choice. I like shinny stuff and contrast. I will polish it this winter. If somebody ask me to build one unit with red vinyl, white face and grills on speakers, I will do. The pic you see above is the way I like to see it.

Great comments man ;)

I computerize every step of that thing : frame, space between speakers, clamps alignment, ports, filters calculation. Believe me, this thing is loud, and sound quality is here.

Most people think more power is better, more power means more sound ! It's (almost) completely wrong. Power alone means nothing, you need to associate it with sensitivity. Those 2 parameters give sound pressure level (SPL), that is what you hear. More SPL = louder.
Let's calculate it, just for fun ;)

Take this calculator :

http://www.stageaccompany.com/support/calculator.html

A Wetsounds REV410 is 92dB/w/m and handle 400Wrms (speaker handle, don't produce power). You get 118dB SPL at 1m, assuming you use a 400Wrms amplifier.

Now enter my numbers (99dB/w/m and 260Wrms), You get ........ 123dB SPL at 1m ! For about 1/5 price of a REV410 pair.

I only push 80Wrms in it (from a $160 5 channel class-D Soundstream amplifier PN5.640D, powering all the boat), but it's already ... 118dB ! Same score than REV410 with 400Wrms in it. No more need for big power wire, big amplifiers, big alternator. Sensitivity is the key.

Ok I'm not pretending to beat Wetsounds with my $400 setup, it's not marine grade, I took curves from pdf, it's probably not accurate, and Wetsounds is the pioneer and leaders on HLCD.

But I'm just happy with those numbers, cost, and fashion of that setup. And people around often ask me about it :)

Looking really good I just wish I had a setup that cut everything out as nice. I am trying a similar build as well but I am trying out the Crecendo audio speakers to see how they sound. We have been using some of the pro audio stuff in the car audio builds we are doing to handle the spl pressure. I like how loud but good they sound and wanted to try these wmx series because they offer them in marine grade but it looks like they just paint them white because they already come in the black carbon fiber cone.

You need to dig deeper and see if its a true CF cone or just a paper cone with a CF laminate on the front side. We see this on a few foax-marine woofers. It looks good from the front but leaves the back of the cone open to the humid elements.

a_deleon
12-01-2015, 12:08 AM
It's true CF/fiberglass cone on the speaker they list it being weather/waterproof. Here check them out they offer them in the 8 and 10 in sizes along with these. These have some larger motors on it and make these more of a 7 in speaker with the setup on this.

Took 10 seconds to find what I needed to know, didint even have to contact the manufacturer.

100% weatherproof/waterproof front end cone/dustcap/surround assembly, meaning as long as the rear of the speaker is sealed off in a proper enclosure, they are certified for heavy marine/outdoor performance without the softparts deteriorating for years to come.

As I stated, dig deeper and you might find that its a paper based cone with an overlay. Back of the cone is still open to the elements.

I am planning on running a sealed setup when my enclosure was all done. I have heard these in both free air and enclosed and the mid bass is a night and day difference so sealed was the way to go for me along with building me a crossover setup as well. For the price of the speaker being so cheap I am not worried about it in case the spider and cone mess up due to moisture getting inside the enclosure.

This is just a build to see if I can get close to the 8's without spending as much. I'm even not using a name brand sub I am trying to build me a sub to work with my current amp and design me a nice kerf ported enclosure to go with the sub.

Nice Found a_deleon,
I just sent a message to Crescendo staff to get the impedance and frequency curves, and the sensitivity of those speakers.
Will simulate a system if I find them interresting, and let you know

I forgot to look on the box to see if it listed more detail specs on it but they offer them in svc 4 & 8 ohm loads. I am running all 8 ohm so when connected I am to bridge my 4 channel to a 2 channel I wanted to keep it at 4 ohms since I am adding a tweeter on each pair along with it I didn't want my drop to be to low and maybe stress my amp.

I was looking at them and flipped the speaker upside down and they look to be real carbon/fiberglass cones not an overlay.

Hi guys ! What's up ?
I'm actually building my third TSB, still using HLCD, but this time with a 10" subwoofer in the center ! This thing will be and sound crazy.
Thanks to a_deleon for Crescendo idea. I bought 2 of them, 8" @4ohm.
This TSB is for a friend of mine. It goes to a Mastercraft, Under a Zero Flex tower, using factory cans handles.

Here is the frame of this new TSB :

Man that came out looking really nice. Those 8's will be loud for sure, just wish I had time to work on mine. It was put on hold after pulling my transmission off and seeing the starter bendix gear and fly wheel needed to be replaced. I hope to start back on it soon and see how mine is going to sound. I have the amps hooked up but I also picked up an EQ to help clean up the sound and it lets me tune each one of the amps.

Hey guys,
The speaker box is on the boat. My friend is more than happy with it. It sounds very clear and far far away behind the boat.

How are you preventing the mounts from pinching right through the vinyl?

Whats the amp of choice and wiring configuration?

Hi Michael,
Screws used are those from the factory tower. So it's 4 screws per side. They actually gows through the vinyl. It does not damage it more than the little slit i do. I did it on the 3 spaeker boxes already done. No issue for years till it's well fastened on the tower/clamps.

I used factory speaker wires already inside the tower. Simply moved unsued sides to the used mounts (dont' know if it's perfectly understandable :D ). The Focal Subwoofer is a dual 4 ohm coil. so it's 2 channel for speakers and 2 channel for the subwoofer. My friend uses old school RFF amps (trapeze ones) to power the whole boat. A four channel (400a4) for cockpit speakers (front and rear speakers paralleled) and tower speakers, a big 2 channel (800a2) for Inside subwoofer (dual 4 ohm coil as well) and tower subwoofer.
Both subwoofer have their coil paralleled. As RFF have separate gain for Right and left side, so it's 2 ohm load on both channel.

Hope I'm understandable !?

Hello Guys,
A new built I've done this season for friends, still DIY HLCD, this time in bullet form.
I've used flower pot for woofers ($20 / side), and SS mug for the tweeters ($10 / side) ! Woofers are Crescendo 8 PWX, tweeters are Pyle PDBT29 (Crescendo didn't had their tweeter available when I placed the order). Add a -3dB L-PAD to match the woofer and tweeter level
I Let you calculate how it costs ... ;)

I removed the mug arm, built wood spacers with resin and black paint to get the round shape to attach tweeters to pots and clamps to pots.
I built 2 models : 1 with existing chrome clamps and external speaker connectors, and 1 with budget plastic (also exists in aluminum) clamps (tubing support).

Here they are :

Thank you Mark. sorry for the late answer

I have new plans for next season, with even easier build, high efficient waterproof tower speakers. These ones will be very impressive with many speakers and almost no filter components, easy to build, budget, wide opening sound even on sides of the boat, and good enough power handling to power the river :)
Keep tuned
