I was out in the boat this weekend and my solenoid went out. I banged it a few times and she kicked over, so I headed in and went out and got a replacement part right away.
Swapped it out, and as she kicked over, I think it froze "ON".. made this buzzing noise and when I went to turn the key off, the engine remained firing and on.
Any idea why this happend?
I turned the key off, then banged on it for a seconds and it killed finally, but scared the snot out of me when I couldn't kill the boat. Didn't seem to do it again after that, but leary if it will again or not. Was it just because it was a first time firing of the new part?
any suggestions?
Also, after I pulled it in and it was working fine, I shut off everything, killed the ignition and radio switch, but my dash lights remained on? WTF???? any suggestions?? I ended up just pulling the battery connection as it was late.. going to look into it today, but looking for suggestions.. Short somewhere?

Didn't get the boat out last night to start it up again, but did notice one difference on the solenoid replacement I got.
on the back of the base of the new one, it has a foam pad where it mounts up.(help with vibration?)
would that make a difference? Only thing I can think of is its not grounded properly. However, The bolts would create metal to metal contact, no?
anyone? I am still learning here.
still can't figure out the dash light thing either...
Sounds like you might have multiple electrical problems -- one problem may not be related to the other -- just coincidential. I'm not sure about either one -- but I would start with the ignition. It's hard to tell with an electrical problem where to start -- it's a process of elimination. But start with that foam pad -- put it on, if it doesn't work make sure your new solindoid is ok -- take it back to the store and have them check it, then check your ignition switch to make sure it's good and the wires are not touching in the back. Good Luck, hope you like puzzles and understand basic current flow, this could take awhile.
Thanks.
Puzzels=fun.
boat problems= suckola.
Just need more time in the day, but I'll get it figured out sooner or later. Good thing is my neighbor is/was a mechanic...better yet, he's owned a Supra Comp for many moons.
we're the only 2 on the lake.
I'll have to see if he can help, as I'm typically a "write the check" kinda guy...however, if I know what I'm doing or have someone showing me, I certainly don't mind getting messy and learning.

Weird..
my last post didn't stick and listed me as a guest.. I guess when clicking the link in the email it doesn't auto log you in.
anywhoo. Thanks for the 411.
puzzle are ok, but boat probs suck..
If it didn't come thru before, my neighbor is/was a mechanic and also owns the only other supra on our lake. Lucky for me I guess as he has owned his for quite some time and knows a thing or two about older supras.
I'll get her figured out sooner or later.. like you said, might just be a rundown of the elect system and alot of trial n error..
I was just mowing the lawn and thinking about the problem -- it may just be the ignition switch.

If that is is, remind me to tell you to buy your lawn mower a beer.;)
or some fresh gas
:p

Ignition switch: thinking..Key'd switch, or the push switch?
The keyed switch for the starter - the lawn mower says he'd rather have beer. He says I give him enough gas jsut sitting on him.

Thanks..
I'm almost thinking it may be that even for the dash lights. Just a connection that is loose or jumping power from another source keeping them on.

Update..
We checked the Solenoid... Weird part, was the key was off, ignition push in switch off, and the Solenoid was closed!? Like it welded itself shut.
If you hit it, it opens up again.
I think you are right OUI..I think it's the ignition switch sticking and creating a constant ignition thus creating the solenoid to weld itself close/constant. Nothing happens when you go to shut the key switch off and or push the ignitions push in switch off...
going to get a new keyed ignition switch to give that a whirl... Is there a specific type to buy? I have no clue what the differences are if any..
So, your boat has a push buttom starter switch?! If so then I would get factory replacements for both. You can check them if you have a ohm/contenuity tester. If the push buttom starter switch is bad it will show open all the time. Then check the key switch. There are only two positions check to see if it flows when it's off.
There's definitly a short somewhere, and it still could be a faulty solinoid and the dash deal could be a different matter.
Good Luck

Oops, maybe that came out wrong.
The push button is on the left side of the wheel.. just a main Power switch that needs to be pushed in for any thing else to work. Not a push button ignition- though I think that may be what it is labeled. ( still have to push each button in as well, ie. radio, nav lights, etc...after this main button is in.
I talked to A.C about a part number and he refer'd me to another guy to chat with on these issues.. Still working on it.
FYI.. the dash thing.. I have no clue what that was all about, however.. the lights don't stick on anymore. I did monkey around with every connection behind the dash, and made sure everything was tight and in place. don't know what that would have to do with them remaining on though.
Yes, that's your main breaker switch to cut all power to everything. I leave it on all the time so the clock reads the right time and the auto bilge pump works. Sounds like the dash thing was a loose wire -- at least you can take that probblem out of the equation.
Work on the switch, the wiring to the solinoid and the solinoid itself.

Thanks for all the help.
I'm going to put in new keyed ignition tomorrow.. will check all elect & flow with that new part in place and see if that works.. if not, I'll check the Soleniod again.. maybe that is also faulty.

"I was just mowing the lawn and thinking about the problem -- it may just be the ignition switch. "
Um, I owe your lawnmower a beer.- That's exactly what it was.
I replaced the ignition switch on Sat afternoon and that was what I believe was the root cause of everything. I believe that is what kept my dash lights on- by sticking and not shutting all the way off at times and probably also fryed my old Solenoid- by the sticking the start "on" some of the times.
$20 part, and my boat is running like a champ again.-- oooh, and I have a new set of shiny keys. Lol.
Thanks for your help OUI!
I also replaced my bildge pump. Never worked since I got the boat last year, but I just drained it everytime on the lift before I went out the next time. Good feeling seeing water flowing out the side.. I feel like I have a new boat again. :)
All right -- Happy Boating!
PS: My lawn mower likes New Castle
