Temp for 98 Legacy?

Currently Stays at a constant 175. Is this OK?

That is normal. My 1998 Legacy, with the 5.7 liter MPI, has operated around 175 degrees since day one.

FWIW my 2000 Legacy operates at 160 - 165, according to the temp gauge anyway. May have a different temp rated thermostat?

more temp would be better, no doubt about it. You may be at 190 in the heads, and the water cools nearer the gauge.
