Hi guys, was wondering if the Saltare owners could post a few pics from the side of the exhaust set up. Just need it from the manifold down to exhaust pipe. Appreciate it thx!

Salty thx, I should have been more specific about what part my fault! I actually need the set up from the tip of the exhaust manifold the rubber hose and the reducer down to the the exhaust pipe. Would like to see how far your hoses have to bend from the manifold to the pipe! Thx for the quick response! If you could find any of that it would be great thx! Really wanting to get this boat finished up and back on the water!!!

mine are a straight shot, no bends from riser exit to exhaust pipe.

don't know if this helps any...

It does salty thx. You do have the 454 in your Salt?

yes....454

Thx. Do you or any of the other guys know if that is standard to be straight from risers to pipes like yours? Or where there some that had bends in them. The guy who did my stringers is saying having a bend in the hose is the way they came from factory. Mine where like yours salty straight now they are at least 3 inch difference in height. Any input would be great.

i haven't seen any with bends but that's not many and there's no telling what the factory was doing. i'd be concerned that you know yours were straight and the shop is telling you the factory had bends.

i think you said your oil pan was almost touching the hull so that's good. are your exhaust parts the same as before the rebuild? if so, it sounds like the engine may have been installed a little further forward or aft. do you have the boat now? i can take measurements of my exhaust hose length for comparison.

i don't think a few inches in either direction makes much difference as long as you have clearance from the rudder and strut for the prop to spin. i know some exhaust hose is made to be flexible but i'd also think it could wear faster as 1 spot will be getting blasted with the hottest water/gas at the first bend. def would get worn at that spot in an overheat situation.

The engine is aligned with the shaft and I would guess the only spot it could be? The problem is I had to completely change the mounts to get it to fit. I would have expected to drop the motor back in and make some minor adjustments to the mounts but I had to bring the engine up about an inch or more so pan would not hit the hull. Raising the engine now made the riser outlet higher than the pipes and the short distance with the reducer in is nearly impossible to bend the hose in that span and get it clamped. Going to give it one more shot when I get home the guy told me to cut hose with an angle and it would angle down better. Does any of tjat make sense ( haha) or sound right to you?

i'm imagining the stringer where the motor mounts are attached is shorter than it was originally forcing you to raise the engine. if the engine was only raised straight up then it should line up with the exhaust tubes. but, if the exhaust tubes sit lower than they should then the engine might not line up with them when it is properly positioned.

do your exhaust tubes rub the bottom of the floor as in my first pic?

do you have exhaust hose like this? http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MPI252-3000
it's supposed to be bendable. i have it but haven't tried to bend it.

Mine are straight but I don't think I'd have a problem with the hose bending.

Not me personally, but a forum member here had an exhaust hose wear down to the point that the hose ruptured at a ever so slight bend and almost sank his boat. Personally I would add that bend as an added inspection item before I start the season.

Thx for the replies guys! Its not so much that I'm worried about the hose bending it that with only the 6-7 inches it has to make the bend is not enough distance to make that kind of bend without having some serious trouble getting it clamped and not crimping the hose.

Salty looking at your picture my exhaust pipe doesn't come close to touching the floor. It is definitely 3-4" lower than yours. So it is going farther into the engine compartment & I believe this maybe the issue. If mine where positioned like yours right up next to the floor the house would have much less of a bend or drop to connect. Salty is that the stock position for your pipes. Also anyone else with a salt can chime in will give me a better argument for the builder! Thx

this is the only pic i can find of it stock where you can see the exhaust pipes. they should be raised 3 or so inches above the level where the engine mounts are.

it shouldn't be terribly hard for them to adjust that. a few cuts and a few patched pieces glassed in. it's not carrying any load or weight. of course, glassing all sides of the patch is important just like glassing everything else really good.

is the carpet in yet?

Salty I think that is my problem! I will try and post some pics and see what you guys think but your pipe is higher than mine by a few inches and that would make sense why my riseers appear to high the pipes are set in the wrong spot!

My new hoses were a bitch to get back on after the rebuild. Even with the upturned edges of the pipe jammed back against the floor, the two openings are too close to line up for a straight shot. I had to cock the hoses on the manifold, reducer, and pipe to simulate a bend and make the angles work. I had to double clamp each connection to get it to seal and hold. Short sections of that stiff hose don't like to flex or bend. I cut the hoses long (covering almost all the reducer) to give me more surface area to work with. I found my old hoses & the ends were bellmouthed as well, so guess I rebuilt it wrong just like the factory. No leaks so far, but I'd recommend making the necessary mods (cut/patch wood, shorten pipes, etc.) to make it a straight shot if possible.

I don't have any side shots that really show the angle, but here's a shot before I started - you can see the port pipe is not gonna line up.

And after - you can kinda make out the hose flexing around the lip of the manifold and reducer.

Syber as bad as it sounds yours look a little more lined up then mine. I'm am going to do the same exact way you did and try one more time. If not I will be asking him to fix it. His have your hoses held up with that kind of bend?

Salty yes unfortunately I put carpet in already so that is another problem!! We will see!!

got a heat gun? pre-bending it as much as possible might help. soapy water should help it slide on the riser and exhaust pipe.

good luck and let's see some pics of the new carpet, etc!

Salty was thinking about that ( maybe even throwing them in the oven for a bit (haha)! Soapy water isn't a bad idea either. Pics will have to wait till I get home doesn't seem to want to play with the ones on my phone. Hopefully get these on and get it in the water, need to get on the board been itching for then last few months!

Here's what I can find of my '89 that shows exhaust. I don't believe it's perfectly straight, I don't have a straight on side picture but I they appear to bend down slightly and I recall them bending down a bit (not sharp though). Supposedly PO replaced stringers in this boat, they seem solid, and I know the floor was replaced.

I'm not sure if this will help, but here is what I did. Over the winter I replaced my exhaust tubes, I originally replaced them without the wire in the tube and I always had a small bend or kink in the tube. I thought about warming the tube up for the minor bend, but was told my a local mechanic.......it wouldn't help because the tubes are made to withstand a good amount of heat. Anyway, I had to buy the tube that has the wire in it so it could make the minor bend and was alot easier to put on. Here is what I ended up buying http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MPI252-3000
I hope this helps you.

i upload pics to photobucket. it assigns the pic a url. then there's a bit of code to type, it's simple...type then paste the url and end with . it will look like this but with no spaces: www.url from wherever your pics are posted. com

there's a way to post them through this site but i don't know how. when i hit 'go advanced' below the reply screen the attach image button doesn't work for me.

The pic that I posted, if you can see it is with the reducer on. With that on there is only 2inches left between the reducer and pipe. You can also see how low my pipe comes out of the stringer not at all close to the floor like it was stock or others! With that little horizontal distance and the drop it needs to make it seems impossible to get a piece of hose to bend in that way. What do you guys think?

i cleaned up your link in your post so the pic will show. in the future, left click on your pic in photobucket and select 'copy url' then paste between and .

that does look like it's too tight of a bend. even if the hose could do that i don't think the flow would be very good. i think the pipes need to be raised. seems to me your rebuilder hasn't rebuilt a supra before. did they tear it apart too?

Yes, I just pulled engine and interior then gave him the boat. This guy has a lot of experience with these boats so I would have expected him to put the popes back in the right spot. I will talk to him today see what he says! Thx again for the help Salty!!

Still no luck getting hoses on! Took it to a local shop and the guy said no way they would work at that angle. He suggested reversing the risers ( no way). Calling the guy who did the stringer work tomorrow and asking him to make it right and quick it is boating season here in NC. I will keep you guys updated thx for all the replays! Have a great memorial day!
