'88 Mariah, prop shaft alaignment

installing rebuilt tranny. attempting alignment of engine/tranny and prop shaft. should their be much play in the prop shaft or should it be fairly ridged. The prop shaft was rubbing inside of the stern tube, so I feel the alignment was off and needs to be adjusted. any suggestions are appreciated. thanks

the prop shaft will droop, esp with the coupler on the end. once you lift the coupler up and connect loosely to the transmission, you'll be able to see if the 2 faces are aligned well or not. rubbing the shaft log es no bueno. bent strut is another possibility. take a good look while you have everything apart.
