I've decided that I need a new starter, and I've heard several guys on this forum recommend DB Electrical. Anyone know of a part number for a 7.4L? I can't ever keep track of whether my engine is a L or R hand turn. I'm thinking left, but confirmation on that would be good too. Thanks.

Always check personally. Not only did many of these engines come in both, but hell I barely remember half the time. For that kind of item, be 100% sure. I always just go out, bump the ignition real quick and see which way it spins. If your starter is really toast and you can't use it, you can always use your impeller as a guide to see which way it turned, and then reference it to the belts on the crank.

I'm looking at their Alternators for mine.

Yeah, I'll check also. I'm 95% sure that it's a LH turn. I think it's indicated in the engine serial tag as well.

wouldn't your prop tell you the rotation?

Not really, certain drivetrain combinations can actually reverse the rotation of the engine such as the 1.23:1 transmission if memory serves me correctly.

Your engine should be CCW -- here's the one I put in last year.

Thanks. I thought I remembered a thread where you were looking for a part number too. I'm going to pull mine to make sure it looks like this one, but from memory I think this is exactly what I have.

Oddly...I have an LH 454 as well, but my starter has a flat flange as opposed to that half bell shape. It is clear that there is some variety.

Weird. The first one they sold me was SDR0031 -- a high torque starter with a flat flange. Sounds like what you are describing. That starter looks WAY different so def. check before you order.
