View Full Version : Help. Raw water intake hose burst - didn't sink

Ok. I'll start by saying that we were caught in a a HEAVY rainstorm right before this happened. I thought that caused the bilge to run excessively. Anyway, the raw water intake hose split around the same time and was pouring water into the boat. We were close to the marina and I made it back with out sinking. The question: I lost most of the power a minute or two before getting to the marina and the temperature gauge was only reading around 120. Did I do any damage?? Thanks for your help.

Really hard to say but unlikely. Dry her out ans see what happens.

120? Do you mean 220? 120 isn't even up to warm temp.

For sure the gauge read 120, which is odd.

No water in the water jacket of the block will not give you a accurate reading from the sending unit. Its like trying to take your temperature and not sticking the thermometer under your tongue.

So it sounds like I could have run it hot. Would the loss of power also be related to it being hot?

Loss of power is more likely due to an electrical problem with that much water in the boat. Just guessing. Hard to trouble-shoot until you get a chance to see what works and doesn't work at this point....

Yeah, i was thinking electrical short because of water...

Is there water under the cap?

I pulled the dipstick and didn't see any water. I didn't look under the cap. Another fact I failed to mention was that the water being pumped by the bilge was vert warm. There was a lot in the engine compartment so it was probably heated from the exterior of the engine. Just mentioning it if that helps. Thanks.

If there was having much water in it then its possilbe it was choking out the engine through the air intake.

ok , fix the hose and see if there is a problem......keep it simple......you need to fix the problem then see if it caused another issue......watch your gauges and see if it overheats, check your impeller and your exhaust hoses for any deterioration

Sorry, I meant the distributor cap

did it hydrolock? i forgot to put my plug in once and engine hydrolocked. only time that's happened to me. i suspect the weight of the water made the risers height too low and water snuck in.

If the water was "very warm" it's probably coming from somewhere other than the raw water hose, definitely check your other water hoses while you're in there. Is there any indication of why the hose failed? Your boat isn't very old to have a blown water hose.

I don't know why the hose failed. The rubber was fileted open and I could see the mesh under it. The hose has a 5 inch split in it. As far as hydro locking. I made it back to the trailer under power. I would think if it hydro/vapor locked, the engine would have stopped altogether. I took it to the supra dealer. I might know more tomorrow.

Update. Good news. The only thing that needed replacing was the hose. I asked the supra dealer about the cutting out issue. Apparently, Indmar has a limiting switch to reduce the rpm's when the engine starts to overheat. That is what happened. Good news is that the engine didn't overheat to the point that it hurt anything.

Thanks for everyone's input.
