View Full Version : Starter issue on 88 PCM 351

Replaced OEM starter with Arco rebuilt 2 years ago. It worked for 1 season, then the gear on the starter started to stick on the flywheel. Replaced it within the first year warranty.
The replacement did the same thing after 1 1/2 year. I just replaced the second one. What is going on?

Are you using bendex grease before you install the starter? Common on the 351s that I have seen.

Did you replace the starter relay ? Its common for them to hang up and cause the starter to stay engaged.

I did not use any grease, the instructions did'nt recomend doing so.

The relay is the original.

They make a special grease just for the bendex. Its mostly for outboards but works wonders on all starters. And if you relay is factory I would change that.

+1 on the relay and grease. Relatively cheap fixes to start at.
