Hi guys,

After just buying my first boat (a 1990 Supra Comp) I have a few questions that I could do with some help with. I have done a bit of wakeboarding but never had much to do with owning or maintaining a boat so this forum has been a great starting point! Any help much appreciated.

1.The boat seems to be in good general condition but I just noticed the blower pipes are perished (engine end) and I just wondered if this can be taped up for now and also what pipe I need to get to replace it (size etc).

2. Also how long am I supposed to run the blowers for? I was told to leave them on the whole time the boat is running? But I just read 4 mins before you start it?

3. The floor seems pretty solid, just one very small springy squeaky section between the ski pole and the front seats. Any thoughts on this?

4. What is the best position for the cavitation plate for wakeboarding? Is this easy to adjust?

5. Any other suggestions regarding loading the boat to achieve a better wake (only beginners so don't need to go crazy). Will a full tank of fuel have an effect?

6. We also have a Monster tower to go on, any tips for installing this and also on the position of it?

7. Anything else major I should be checking before putting in the water?

Thanks,
Oli

First let me welcome you to the family . The comp is an amazing boat and yours is a looker for sure.
1- Yes you can tape the blower hoses temporally they only move the air through the bilge area to remove any gas fumes that may be present. Skidim is a good source for parts for your boat.
2- Run the blowers for about 4-5 minutes before starting the engine . Its also a good Idea to open the engine cover and inspect everything including fluid levels every time before you put it in the water. Your sense of smell will help detect gas fumes in the bilge. Its not necessary to run them all the time the air will flow with the movement of the boat.
3- Use the search box in the upper right corner for floor repair there are lots of posts on that subject.
4-For wakeboarding move the cavitation plate all the way up . Note its only designed to move about 1/2'' [13mm] .
5-More weight = more wave however be careful with your comp its designed to be a ski boat and make a minimum wake. It sits very low to the water adding weight will make it even closer. There are members here that can help you with this .I'm sure they will post soon.
6- I'm not a fan of towers on comps .I like the extended pylons better they are removable and don't take away from the sleek lines of the comp. If you do put a tower on it contact the manufacture for installation advice.

Thanks very much for the advice - very helpful!

So if the plate is only designed to be moved 1/2" is there any adverse affect of taking it right up? other than changing the wake?

Welcome to the family.
On my Slatare, I remove the cavitation plate, as it is designed to kill the wake. I notice no any issue since I don't have it anymore.
The wake size is better, stronger, higher and less flushy now.
The MT1 is a nice tower on a small boat like the Comp. It will look nice with it IMO, and save place in the boat if you get board racks. If you add tower speakers, then the ride will be a real pleasure ;)
You can load it with 1700lbs as I read on the forum. Seems that 1500 is a good target to get a very good wake size.

Enjoy your boat and take tons of pics ;)

Welcome to club Supra as my Supra Comp tape says ;)

As for the blowers, my blowers havent worked for many years up until last year, I replaced them with new Detmar blowers. But, I just opened the hood, You could smell the fumes escape for a few sec then your good to go, best blower is silent! lol

Thanks guys... good to get some feedback.

I will give the cavitation plate a try just set at its highest (the 1/2") and see how that goes, will then try gradually adding some weight. The tower we got is an MT2 - will post some picks once its installed.

The MT2 is a big tower. It fits perfectly on the Saltare, with good dimensions for that boat. I'm afraid it will look too big on a Comp. Ask friends to come and keep it in place before drilling your hull, and take pics to get an idea. Don't forget that the comp is very low on water.

Here is my MT2 on the Saltare (23') :

Don't forget to add your boat place on the map :

Your Saltare looks great! I see what you mean about the tower fitting perfectly.

Should be picking up the MT2 today or tomorrow so will offer it up and see how it looks. It was an Ebay purchase so will see how we go with it, it's 4" taller than the MT1 apparently which I didnt realise - Oops.

Does anyone here have any pics of the MT2 on a Comp?

Supra's with MT1 : LINK (http://www.monstertower.com.ua/d/photo.php?type=towboats&tower=1&boat=23)

Supra's with MT2 : LINK (http://www.monstertower.com.ua/d/photo.php?type=towboats&tower=2&boat=6)

The MT2 has less rounded front arms

I think I like the look of the MT2 anyway (which is good :)) Just have to see how it fits.

Thanks for you help.

Cant wait to get it in the water now - in the middle of a bit of a heat wave over here in UK too (makes a change!) so hoping to make the most of the next couple of months!

And if you want to rock your boat with a different tower speaker, I built mine, I can build another one with didicated design, color, text etc.
And it can be a cheap shipping, as you live in UK, and I live in France ;)

Wow! That tower speaker setup looks amazing, great job! Cant believe you made that from scratch. Do you work in the creative industry? If not you should!

Thank you man :)
I worked in tv shows decoration. Now I draw for building construction.
Look to go back in decoration now ;)
I like to think of and build things by myself.
You can check my home made underwater LEDs (https://forum.supraboats.com/showthread.php?14950-Building-your-own-underwater-Led) as well ;)

Nice one thanks!

This looks great in my opinion, I like the slightly longer, angled front arms. This will be handy as a reference for where to place the mounting brackets too :D

Just a quick one - what type of engine oil should I be using? people recommending different things.

No issue

Yeah that's what I was thinking, 10w40 or 10w30.
Cheers.

For oil, I pick up Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10W30. It goes on sale all the time at advanced. I leave it in for 2 years at a time.

So I finally got the T1 Monster Tower fitted and managed to get in the water at the weekend! So much fun and the boat is running like a dream.

Nice boat man.
You finally go for a MT1 instead of the MT2 ???
What about the Wake size ?

Syntek
08-27-2013, 05:57 AM
Yup MT1 was perfect for me.

Wake is only pretty small at the moment - but big enough for us beginners once you have some people in the back :-)

Thanks for the welcome Jon... will keep the updates coming as they happen. For now just keen to get as much time in the water as possible while we have good weather in the UK. We do have a few plans for the boat over winter though.
