So, I plan on changing the tranny fluid in my 08 Sunsport while winterizing this year. My question is this. While hooked up to a fake-a-lake can you put it in gear to spin the transmission to stir up the fluid prior to the change? Is this even necessary? It hasn't been ran in 3 or 4 weeks now, just want to get out any contaminates that I can. Will this hurt my drive shaft seals or anything not being submerged in water?

Thanks for the advise guys...sadly, summer is coming to a close for me. :(

You should never spin a DD of VD out of the water . Its very hard on the cutlass bearings.

That's what I was thinking. Will running it out of water in neutral stir any of the tranny fluid, or only when it is in gear?

How far away from a lake are you? You would be surprised how running the boat and getting everything up to temp will help out. I run mine up to temp and then trailer it back about 10-20 minute drive depending on the launch I use and traffic, then it is about another 20 minutes or so before I start pulling fluids and they are still plenty toasty when I drain them.

What he said ^^^^^

Best to change with warm fluids.

Yeah, I am about 20 minutes from a launch...was just trying to avoid that ordeal since I already have a fake a lake so I can get the oil up to temp. Oh well, one last trip it is...I may have to do a ski run while I am out!

The fake a lake will still come in handy for after you change the engine oil and filter. Always a great idea to run it and circulate clean oil once more before the lay up.

I start at the lake - always need one last ride. Head home for the fluid changes. Then recirc some oil. Then start the winter layup process.

Yeah, that's true. I always circulate the fresh stuff before she sleeps for the winter.

I'm not positive in this but I believe the fluid still flows as long as the boat is on. The flow depends on Rpms and the gear it's in. But the fluid should cycle even though it's not in gear.

Here is more or less what I do:

WINTERIZING ’93 SUPRA SUNSPORT
1. Add Sea Foam to full tank of gas

AT THE LAKE
2. Run motor up to temperature
3. Fog motor (*optional*)
4. Drain water: (2) block, (2) manifold, (1) trans oil cooler (or pull lower hose off), (1) “U” Joint front of motor
a. Use wire to clean out any debris
b. Raise and lower tongue to remove all water

AT HOME
5. Change motor oil/filter (while warm) CHANGE OIL EVERY 50-75 HOURS
a. Use gallon Ziploc bag for filter
b. Oil: Valvoline VR1 (not synthetic!!) 20w-50 (~5 quarts)
c. Filter: Motocraft FL-1A
6. Change tranny oil (while warm)
a. Valvoline Dex/Merc III ATF
7. Unplug coil wire and bump motor to circulate fresh oil
8. Drain/clean water strainer
9. Remove raw water pump and impeller (Pulley on the front left)
a. Store impeller coated with Vaseline in a Ziploc bag
10. Replace drain plugs
a. Use anti-seize on bolts when replacing
11. Pour RV anti-freeze in the upper hose that attaches to the raw water pump
a. Raise the end of the hose above engine level
b. 3-4 gallons of pink RV anti-freeze
c. Leave in until spring
12. Loosen both belts
13. Remove any water from bilge
14. Clean spark arrestor (brake cleaner or soak in parts cleaner)
15. Clean motor with a rag soaked with WD-40
16. Remove battery, ballast bags, life vests, cushions, and rope bag to store indoors
17. Wash/dry cover and spray cover with waterproofing spray
18. Vacuum Interior/Clean vinyl with 303
19. Dryer sheets in boat
20. Top off gas and treat with Sea Foam
21. Wash/wax exterior

Wow, I had no idea it takes that much work to get a boat ready for the off-season. Here, in Arizona, winterizing a boat means throwing in a couple of wetsuits

I wish my friend....I wish. Yeah I pretty much dedicate a day to getting the boat ready for storage. The nice thing is that in the spring I just have to re-attach a couple things, fire her right up, and go.

Bob--you suck! :p

If your in a cold climate you might think about running on rv antifreeze. We do every boat this way in my shop. This provides bursting protection down to -72*F.

Do the dryer sheets help with mice or what?

And yes, does anyone know for sure if the boat is running if it circulates the tranny fluid?
