So I went to see the supra la brisa I have been asking questions about. The boat has been very neglected After some sever negotiating I ended up buying it. Now I have a winter project on my hands lol
So here is the history on the boat. It's a 1994 supra labrisa with the PCM 5.8. The po had it serviced and stored every year at the local marina. But the boat sat in the water all year in his boat house so the hull exterior is aweful! Any sugestions on how to bring it back? I am thinking pressure wash. Then wet sanding?
The interiour is brand new I am actualy thinking of painting the teal black. What do you think?
Here are some pics

Nice boat! That trailer looks way to small lol. Yeah pressure wash then I would try buffing first with a strong compound and a good buffer with a wool pad. If that doesn't work then wet sanding will work for sure. But I have never had a boat that couldn't buff everything out of, it just takes time. As far as the painting goes I think the original colors look great and match the interior but I think a full wrap would be easier.

Yes that is the wrong trailer no long trips with that thing. Pressure wash for sure then I would wet sand and buff it will be quicker than trying to just buff. No way would I paint a Supra get it cleaned up and I think you will like what you see.

Cliff
10-28-2013, 08:51 AM
Yeah the trailer was just to get her home (although it handled the 4 hour drive lol)
So I pressure washed the boat and it does look better.
The marina I got the boat from said they use maratic acid. He said they do dozens of boats a year that way and it works great. I have used maratic acid to clean concrete before. I m scared to try it on my boat lol. What u think?

10-28-2013, 09:00 AM
Read up on Muriatic acid. That stuff is no joke. Can work great, and can royally screw up a boat, worse than it is now.

I have no experience with the acid, so others may chime in. But I know it can do it's job, just be ready with a hose. That boat does look tired, but salvageable. I hope you like work. :D

Cliff
10-28-2013, 09:31 AM
Haha yes this will b the fith boat I have restored lol
I will keep the pics coming. I hope to put in a larger alternator second battery; killer sound system. Possibly a ballast system Refinish the exterior. Possibly change the carpet. Do a major tune up and either alter this trailer or get a new one. All by next spring I have my work cut out for me lol

I use CLR every year as our lake leaves some white spots(calcite minerals in the water) that otherwise are hard to remove. I would mix it 50/550 and wash her down , let soak for about 5 mins then rinse thoroughly.

Get a bottle of captain johns that will clean off all the algae stain I use it on my fishing boat every year. It sits on the Water all season and it removes it with ease. As for the teal you might be able to buff it out with a good compound but I think you are going to have to do the wet sand route. I wouldn't paint. Every time the boat hits the dock you will regret it. The colors are the same as my labrisa. I think it looks great when it's clean. Good luck and welcome to the family. Labrisa owners need to stick together.

Oh yeah the alternator. I doubt you need to change it. I'm running two big amps that push 4 6.5 kickers and a 10" sub. Plus I run LEDs and I never have a problem. I have two batteries and a perko and unless we are sitting for hours with the music blaring I have never needed to switch batteries.

Thanks for the welcome.
So I read up on muratic acid and figured I would give it a try
But beware this stuff is strong!!!!
Read up on its use
I used it mixed with water at 50%. I just did the little bit on the side of the boat this morning
Also I recommend covering the trailer if it is a good one lol

Did it take the haze off the teal.

Cliff
10-29-2013, 02:16 PM
Unfortunatly no :( the haze is still there. I m thinking it's gonna take some elbo grease to remove the haze. The muratic acid dident seem to touch the gellcoat at all. It just seemed to melt off the organics. I will try it full streignth tonight and see hat it does lol

Jetlink
10-29-2013, 03:14 PM
The haze is most likely oxidation. Wet sanding should take care of that though.

Cliff
10-29-2013, 03:47 PM
Yea. I owned a bayliner once that was supposed to be blue but looked white from oxidization I used rubbing compound and a large polisher and it came up great. I'll try it in a couple days
Tonight I m gonna lift the whole boat and acid wash the bottom

Cliff
10-29-2013, 09:45 PM
Ok so after a hour and a half work the boat is back to white. It looks great! The muratic acid worked awesome now I am going to have to polish the bottom again but at least that crap is off the bottom

First I had to get it up so I could work on it

Leave the colour scheme just how it is, it will grow on you. As for the hull give it time to relax(a week or so) and wash it again with a mixture of 20% liquid pool Chlorine, 1% dish soap and 79%warm water. Use a car wash brush to scrub the mixture into the hull and let it flash for as long as possible without drying out. Rinse and repeat. The chorine will make a mess out of any dyed fabrics so make sure to wear old stuff and not splash it into the interior.

Wait for a month or so and wash again with the strongest degreaser you can find with a wash brush. There is something about letting projects relax between washing. I cant explain it but it works wonders on bringing back an item from the dead. What also help is changing up the cleaners to. By the time you get to this point the hull will be as white as its going to get without removing some gel coat with wet paper.

Great boat and enjoy, just be glad it wasn't a wood hull boat. You can do a lot of compound and polish in the time it take to pull the cap and foam.

Cliff
11-01-2013, 06:34 PM
So after like 4 hrs of wet sanding and buffing I have 1/4 of the boat done lol.

That boat is gonna look new when your finished with it! What compound are you using?

Cliff
11-02-2013, 08:46 AM
I am using 800 wet sand 1500 wet sand. Then 3m perfect it rubbing compound Then I will have to seal it with a polish not sure what yet though lol

Cusefan78
11-03-2013, 09:02 PM
Thanks. I'm actually thinking about changing mine from white to that 3d chrome one found on the newer boats. I tried black on it. Didn't look good. I figured with the black trim on the boat the black was the way to go but I pulled it off an hour later and ordered the white. 13521 this is the 59" chrome logo off the supra world editions. Waterski.com sells them

Cliff

11-10-2013, 08:44 PM
Ok so upper and lower deck have all been buffed and polished. But honestly every time I look at the purple stripes on the boat I cringe. So I have done something I might get raged on for lol.
First I taped up the stripes. I used high quality tape first.
http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad302/cliff717/th_null_zps59f78a66.jpg (http://s946.photobucket.com/albums/ad302/cliff717/?action=view&current=null_zps59f78a66.jpg)

I use this stuff cause it stops the leaching of the paint and gives nice clean lines.
Next I use 3m tape

http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad302/cliff717/th_null_zpsc0888875.jpg (http://s946.photobucket.com/albums/ad302/cliff717/?action=view&current=null_zpsc0888875.jpg)

That looks great. Was it a two stage paint? How many coats of clear did you use. I was thinking about ditching my pink stripe

Cliff

Thanks It is single stage paint but it does have hardener in it. That was one coat epoxy primer and two coats black

Cusefan78
11-10-2013, 11:02 PM
Wow that really looks great. Was there any orange peel you had to color sand? I'm really thinking about doing this. I looked into spraying gelcoat but it just looks like a ton of work.

Cliff
11-10-2013, 11:07 PM
Nah no orange peel. I thought I might have issues getting fish eyes in the paint cause of all the polish i used on the boat lately but I wiped it down with thinners really well and it seemed to be no problem

Yeah I really like the black on it. I was thinking of having a friend spray the cosmichrome stuff on my stripes. Thought it would look good with those chrome supra decals but I really like the black. Really updates the boat.

Cliff
11-10-2013, 11:32 PM
Thanks. I m really tempted to paint the side also :0 I priced out putting black vinyl on the sides and it's too expensive. We have our own paint booth so paint is cheap. I m just afraid that the paint will kill resale value. It's hard to paint gelcoat that came up so nice lol

Cusefan78
11-10-2013, 11:38 PM
The problem with painting the teal is if you ever bump the dock it's going to chip the paint. I have seen a few older mastercrafts that people have painted and they look awful after a few years. In my opinion the teal looks great in the water.

Cliff
11-10-2013, 11:38 PM
I was also thinking of a wrap with this teal as a base colour. It would match the interior piping on the seats

James
11-11-2013, 01:38 AM
I say just go with newer supra decals. Something as small as that can update a boat a lot and make it look newer than it is. I like the ones you have in the pictures. Maybe even chrome SUPRA depending on how it would look on your boat and your budget.

Henner
11-11-2013, 12:04 PM
I vinyl wrapped my teal in black for around $130, next is figuring out what to do with the purple stripes on a budget.

Cliff
11-11-2013, 12:32 PM
Nice did you do the vinyl your self. Was it hard?

Henner
11-11-2013, 01:26 PM
I did do it myself and its not easy but not something someone cant do with a couple buddies and a couple blue smokes "bud light". If you are right up on the boat you can see a few fingers and small bubbles but back up 5 feet and there gone!!! haha I just bought 50 foot of the thickest vinyl that they said could be under the water line. It was about 6 dollars a yard, and was about 48" wide.

Have you ever dropped into Puslinch lake? It's close to Milton and there are 3 slalom courses there, it's where I do most of my skiing. I'm a member of the McClintock ski club. DAFF

I love the Ford trucks but there newer diesels are absolutely junk. I have many friends who have bought them, just to keep fixing and pouring money into the diesel pot. To me a diesel should be more reliable and durable than the gasoline replacement. I myself would never want to drive one since I know sooner or later you will be pulling the cab in order to fix it.

No truck is perfect and that's why I'm sticking to the manual older 12valve Cummins trucks. (both Dodge and Ford) I have four of them now and only once one let me stranded, took me a few minutes to determine the fuel shut off solenoid relay was at fault. Lifted up the mechanical mechanism and vroom. Sure the older trucks might not be as powerful or have the prestige as the newer stuff but once its all said and done they get the job done all the same.

Cliff
12-01-2013, 11:15 PM
Yes ford diesels have a bad rep. But so do all new low emission diesels I tell yah it is nice to have a deisel start at -30 though lol

DAFF
12-02-2013, 12:32 AM
I too have been looking at a few newer 6.7s Dodges. My only concern is the emission garbage and the problems associated with it. Till they get it right and there is long term proof I'm going to be sticking with the pre 07.5's. Many are reverting back to gas, for the diesel savings is justifiable in the long term venture of truck ownership. So the 08 had the 6.4 or the 6.0l.....

As for the cold weather start ups the 5.9l are actually very good. I never plug in the 06 and rarely plug the 12v in unless its stupid cold out.

Cusefan78

I'm a huge ford guy who owns a landscape design company. I recently switched all my pickups to ford super duties with 5.4s and my dumps all went to hino cabovers. I had some dodge and ford diesels and was constantly having injector problems. The 5.4s are great. Plenty of power and aren't too horrible on gas they aren't great on gas but bulletproof.

Cliff
12-02-2013, 08:55 AM
Yeah I currently drive a 2008 f250 with a 5.4. I love the motor. This f350 has the 6.4 in it I plan on removing all the emission stuff so that will be one less problem lol

So I finally got my truck done a couple weeks ago and now I have some time to spend on the boat. First I got all the speakers installed in the boat. I was sick of stepping all over the boxes. So in the boat i ground out the stock speaker holes and installed 6.5 kickers. http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad302/cliff717/D3C5A014-AFE9-47F1-BDF3-A580BD97F806.jpg

But after all that work I can't bring myself to liking the teal :(. I did not want to paint the boat for fear of killing resale. So instead I got a sheet of 4' x50' of semigloss carbon fiber wrap. The wife and I spent all last night and all today covering over the teal :) here is the finished product

Well, I'm not Canadian, but can I say your boat is looking great? I personally liked the teal, especially after all of your elbow grease, but you've done a great job with the vinyl and you've really brought the boat back from what it was when you bought it. Have you had it on the lake yet?

where did you get that vinyl from?

Cliff

I got the vinyl from a company in Quebec on ebay. Here is the listing

Thanks Titan I wanted to get the gellcoat up nice anyhow. I figured if I do go to sell the boat later at least I can say (and show from the pics) that it is perfect. Next job is the decals on the side of the boat Then change the green carpet to charcoal. Then do the trailer. I have two aluminum rims on order so that will change the looks a bit

So I got a chance to work on the boat again the bit the front dash pad had faded and nasty brownie pink color I really should've got a before picture it was really gross. So I removed the dash removed all the gauges and painted it with vinyl paint. come out pretty good I think.

The plastic on the gauges was so foggy you couldn't even see into half of them so while I had them out I bought some headlamp restore and polished the lenses

Hmmm. Interesting... Our gauges were badly faded and the plastic panels were cracked. So we replaced them with carbon fiber panels and new Teleflex gauges. Same style but glass domes instead of plastic raised covers... The glass wont fade but man, that resto really worked!

The green had to go
So out with the green.

I wonder why your boat has the old 1:1... It should have the 1.23:1 so the motor sits level... weird...

Cliff how was the rug job I'm thinking of doing mine. I don't think you have the original motor configuration in that. Mine is a gr40 pro boss with mpi. I know my boat came with the upgraded engine but I thought it 94 and up came fuel injected.

Cliff

The carpet was super easy to install I used lock tight spray carpet adhesive. the edges of the carpet even just went up and hook in a little type of j-trim on the side of the boat super super simple. As for the motor this is the pro boss 351 but I do not have multiport injection. I think it is a holy type of fuel injection I have seen them on musclecar conversions before. But this one was stock from supra in 94.

that is the efi you want to stay away from... Its greatly known for being unreliable, far worse than the Pro-Tec Ignition... But it works, great! And actually its neck and neck between your motor with the Holley (yes it is a Holley from early 90's) TBI vs the GT40 MPI motor. The reason being is that the Holley TBI was able to flow 1,000 CFM and had the injectors to go that far, so the motor could take as much as it could and the Holley TBI still had plenty to offer, while the GT40 only had like a 65MM Throttle body (or something like that, maybe a 70mm) it was also restricted by its individual runners for each cylinder, but the MPI was beetter for power and efficiency, however it could not offer the motor all it wanted like the Holley...

Its very rare to see but, the best system was some of the first GT40 motors made, because when Ford first made the new MPI system for the Mustangs, the original intake manifold had separate runners that were cast apart from each other, you had 8 offset aluminum runners going down, that intake offered the most power from ford, but it was expensive to make, so quick decisions were made and a quick new one piece runner assembly was out into production.

I can't seem to find any pics, mind taking one and sharing?

Also, you have no idea how much I have read and how long I have been reading to figure out PCM engine models and specs, it just really interests me. Maybe a little too much lol

That’s some cool info. I didn’t know that PCM ever used the tubular upper intake manifold. This is what I’ve been playing with . It run out awesome . I get 250 more rpm ,1456214563uses less fuel and idles at 500rpm

Thanks, the power and fuel economy is great. When I first picked it up I figured it would drink the gas but it's turns out to be a sipper. The torque all the way the throught the power band is unreal. I'm running a 1 cooler plug in it this year and it seems to run a little smoother

The boat originally called for Agsf32c I went with Agsf22c. It's a hair cooler plug. Seems to run a little smoother with Zero power loss.

Just a quick update the boat. It has been running great! it puts off an excellent wake for me; I have done some more modifications to it; larger stereo system and just a general cleanup. It took a bit to get both speedometer's working and there were some electrical plugs that needed worked out. But now it is in excellent condition. I really like the boat. The only thing I am not used to is it is a tad on the small size

Cliff did you rebuild your dog house? I have to do mine this week. Wondering if you have any tips. Also going to replace the rug in the cockpit like you did. How bad of a job is it. Do you know how big of a piece you used.

Cliff

When I had my dog house off I did reinforce it a bit with long screws and some sheet stainless steel but I did not have to totally rebuild it. The carpet in the cabin area was super super easy I would not hesitate to do it. I'm not sure of the size

You're going to had to get someone to template that for you and have it cut out for you. It won't be available anymore.
