Just a general question, how is it that these "newer" boats have higher capacity? For example I have an 05 22ssv with a capacity for 9. I rarely have 9 people in the boat because it is so cramped. How is it the new SC is a foot shorter and has a capacity of 14? Is it just a weight thing or how would you fit 14 people in a SC?

My 06 20 footer is rated for 10...

I don't know but my 98 legacy is rated for 10. I'm not exactly sure how I would feel about that though. But I believe anything over 23' you can have as many people as you want as long as they have a life vest and a place to sit, don't hold me to it though.

The maximum capacity is taking the boats weight and the weight of the people and gear that can be safely carried by the boat. That load is determined by a bunch of things including the overall dimensions of the boat. It's not always about the number of "seats" the boat has.

Newer boats with wider beams can handle more weight and still remained balanced better than a narrower boat can.

The capacity and weight placard is not required on boats over 20'. But they have them because it gives them a NMMA rating. For boats over 20' you can fit as many as safely fit and whom you have life jackets.

Rules and construction have both changed. I can say that a CC Martinique will eventually plane off and cruise with 20 people while *rated* for 7 or 8 lol! And thats not with the 454, the 351W! XD

10 people in a legacy? I have a '99 and it's only rated for 8, and it's a packed house with 8 people. I can't imagine having 10. I didn't know there was any noticeable difference between the two years.

The number of people who comfortably fit has a lot to do with the size of the people. 10 of me and we might swamp a Legacy. 10 of my wife and you'd wonder what to do with the extra room.
