So I finally got up to my cottage and started to get it ready for the year. Question can I start it out of water with a hose attached without burning up the impeller. My water hookup is is just after my strainer. Also I want to replace my wires. What does everyone recommend

As long as the impeller sees water you are good.

Can I run it without the impeller in the pump. Don't want to take Ny chances with the new impeller. Haven't put it back in yet anyways. Ptown just got back and saw your emAil. I'll respond to you in a few but I'm going to get a Roswell at some point this year.

Yup, the water pressure will get the water to where it needs to go without an impeller. However, as far as the impeller is concerned, hose and lake are the same thing.

NO water is realy hard on the exhaust system. Don't run it for long.

He's not talking about running it without water, just without the impeller.

why without the impeller??? If you hook your hose up to it your force feeding it, the impeller does no work and gets water... So why the question???

I asked cause I didn't want to burn out an impeller. Didn't realize my question was all that stupid. Clearly I guess I'm just not as smart as you.

You won't burn it out on the hose. Might as well just put it in.

Yeah I'm going to. My concern was that the hose wouldn't have enough flow to run towards the impeller and towards motor.

If you turn your hose on high, it actually forces the water past the impellar sometimes, so it can be deceiving how good your impellar is really when running on a hose since it doesn't have to suck up the water to cool.

Sometimes why people will say they run fine on the hose, but hot on the water.

I don't go above 1500 RPM on the hose as it doesn't have enough supply generally.

Also, keep an eye on your exhaust (water coming out) and water temp. A garden hose can easily crimp/collapse and cut off you supply if not paying attention to it.

If you really want to see what's going on, put your intake hose into a 5 gal bucket and fill the bucket from the hose. Keep the hose on full, filling the bucket and start the motor. Mine will empty the bucket at idle in about a minute. (at least that's how it feels to me, I've never timed it)

That is how I winterize as well. Run it on the hose directly till it is warm, drain the block and manifold, and suck up a bucket of antifreeze quickly.

Thanks guys. All went well. Did a tuneup, started it off a hose. Then dropped it in the lake and went for a quick ride.
