I decided to wet sand this spring, and I think it is turning out pretty good.

I have the Gunwhale complete and was working on the sides when I found this on the port side just in front of the windshield.

From the looks of it somebody fixed something there and then painted it. I remember when I bought the boat that I thought there was a spot there that looked different. Like it was a different color. When I rub my hand up-and-down over this I can feel a slight raise. Any thoughts?

Definitely an old repair. I would tend to think it might be coming apart from the look of the crack in the picture. Its an EZ fix. With a little grinding, cloth, resin, fill and paint it will be as good as new.

Well, I sanded off the old paint and here is what I see. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/y6e3ete9.jpg
So I ground down to see how deep the crack went. Thankfully it didn't go all they way though. It was kinda deep in one spot though. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/uze2ygum.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/08/a4ube3yt.jpg

Now time to build up with some 1708!

With all of that done it was the perfect day to finish it! Weather was in the low 70 and I was using epoxy so plenty of pot life.

I first taped off the area to keep the epoxy drips at a min

Then I cut out all the layers of glass. I used 3 layers of 1708 and a final layer of a finishing glass

Then I saturated them and put them in place. They laid up real nice. Had a low spot where the crack went deep but took care of that with a few more small patches of the finishing glass.

Let it sit and wiped up some drips a few time but the epoxy kicked fairly quick.

I will start sanding tomorrow and then use thickened epoxy as a filler to level and feather it all out.

Ill post more pics when it is done!

Holy crap man. I'm impressed, I'm pretty sure I would have been like "crap, time to take it for repair $$$$$$$".

Good job, keep us updated on progress and keep the pics coming. I like learning about this.

After getting a quote to have that spot gelcoat it, I did not feel that paying $400 was worth it. So for $10, I got this:

I think you should keep going and try the gelcoat yourself. You did great on the fiberglass and if the gelcoat doesn't turn out, you can put the sticker back. But if it turns out close you'll be way ahead of the game.

I have a spot on the starboard front of mine. Goes from the windshield up to the first cleat. Probably 3-4' long. It's been patched and painted. Problem is.....the paint isn't even close to the gelcoat color and they didn't fade the edges. It's straight lined. Didn't find it till after I wet sanded. I'm so sad.
