All,

I just got down to the lake for a weekend of fun in the sun and went to start up my 2003 Launch SS (just passed the 500 hour mark), and upon startup the engine idled at about 400 rpm's, rather than typical 700-800 rpm's. After turning the engine off and restarting it, the engine idled at normal speed. I had a second yesterday to check the oil (fine), but didn't do much else. I plan to check the fuel filter today, but does anyone have any idea of what else I ought to check or what might cause a low engine idle?

Thanks,

Kevin

Check the throttle plate for build up . With the engine off open the throttle and look behind the plate it should be perfectly clean if not clean it with carb cleaner and a rag or tooth brush.

Ok, thanks. I just got a morning set in (problem persists), and we noticed a stronger smell of gasoline than normal. I'm not sure if the two are related, but wanted to report all symptoms.

Stronger smell than normal...you should have no gas smell at all! This is a major safety concern. Are we talking about a carb or fuel injection?

It's carbureted. I'm going to change the fuel filter next week, hopefully that solves my issue.

Sounds like you have a bad power valve probably needs a carb overhaul .

Check the distributor cap for fauling. Weak spark will cause this problem

As an update, it appears the Idle Air Control Valve had gotten gummed up and dirty, so I replaced it and my issues seem to be resolved. Thanks for your help.
