View Full Version : Well after searching, I finally own a Saltare

After a few months of searching for a SunSport or Saltare, I finally found one that I thought was worth what the seller was asking. I found it on Craigslist in North Carolina. Its never been in salt water, and has been back to the factory for a floor and stringer replacement. That repair is undocumented, but after checking the hull over I believe that the work has been done, but I cannot verify that it was done at the factory. My budget was a bit less than what I paid, but after showing my wife and daughter the ad on Craigslist, I got the approval to spend the extra cash. It will need a good cleaning, waxing, scrubbing, etc. and will need some new vinyl on a few cushions, but nothing that is needed right now. I went with him to his local lake and we put it in the water and rode around a bit, checking the motor for any issues, but none were found. I am a former ASE certified mechanic and can rebuild this motor with my eyes closed if it comes to that in the future. I am looking to get a couple of seasons out of it before I have to do any major work to her. She does need some TLC, but is what I have been looking for.

...And now for the pic...

Nice looking boat. Congrats! I think I remember seeing that online recently. Get us some more pics with the interior. It's kinda hard to tell, but does it have some kind of electric winch?

Thanks guys. The trailer is obviously not a factory trailer and does not have an electric winch. It does, however, have rollers instead of bunks and I really like that. It tows very well behind my F250. I will be taking it out this weekend even though it might be a bit chilly here in Kansas City. I will get a few pics and maybe even a video of the daughter boarding behind it if I can.

That trailer looks to be for a boat with a stern mounted engine. I'd check the tongue weight to make sure it's not excessive.

Congrats, nice looking boat, and welcome to the forum. I picked my sunsport up 2 years ago in S.C. and trailered her back to upstate NY. These old girls seem to be in better condidtion down south. What are your plans for the boat? ski, surf, wakeboard or just cruise?

Congrats on the boat... I'm in KC also.

Based on your screen name, I've gotta ask. Have you been into the sportbike scene in the past 4-5 years? I remember a guy with that name.... :)

What lake you going to?

I actually bought it for my daughter more than me. She's 12 and is just starting to wakeboard and she loves it. My little I/O wasnt cutting it, so I searched for a few months trying to find either a Sun Sport or Saltare. I found a Sun Sport that my wife and daughters loved from the pictures on Craigslist, but was about 5 hours too late. A couple of guys from Colorado drove to Austin to look at it and drove away with it. I found this Saltare, but it was a bit out of the price range I was trying to stay in. I called the owner and talked with him and got him to come down a few hundred, but was still a bit more than I wanted to spend. After a long conversation with my wife, we decided to buy it if when I got down to North Carolina it was as I had hoped. Needless to say, I own it now. It needs some TLC which it is going to get this winter, but she's solid and we love her.

Zim, I think you and I know each other...lol. Yes I am that guy. We were at Smithville all weekend. Saturday the rain held off and the water was like glass all afternoon. It was about 80 degrees with 72 degree water temperature. Both the daughter and I boarded this weekend. I even got up on my new board for a bit. I don't really care much for wake surfing but we love to board. We'll have to get together sometime this next spring/summer.

Definitely. Smithville is where I go if I'm in kc. I'm still planning to get out and board a few more times this year. I've got a wet suit and a heater haha. Glad you had fun this weekend... beautiful weather for sure.

Welcome to the salt club. You will love it! I got mine two years ago and enjoy every minute I am on it with my daughter. The dual captain seat is the best!

There's a lot of good people on here with the same boat. If you run into anything or have any questions just ask!

Well I got a coupe of pics from last weekend, but nothing really great because we were enjoying ourselves way too much. I'll have to get some better ones this weekend when we are up at Smithville lake again.

I would love to post pictures, but each of the last two times I have, I have had to wait on moderator approval and still have not gotten it after 48 hours, so...

Yeah they get lost in the mix of spam. No worries - post them in an edit, or just wait until you have at least 10 posts, I think that's the magic number.

Sorry, I did not realize you were still being moderated from posting pictures when I looked at this thread a few days ago. I fixed it for you and the magic number is 10 posts.

Hey Bill... wasn't planning to get on the lake today, but if you're out there I'd load up and come meet up with you.

Well while I love the Saltare I have to say man, I'm more impressed by the rifles (sorry I clicked right and saw them). Are you a gunsmith? Some of those puppies are very unique builds. I'm an avid long-ranger as well. Love the handy work, or the collection, whichever one.

Damn Mike, I get really spotty cell coverage up here. I have been here since about 3pm yesterday afternoon. I put my travel trailer up here Friday before work so it was already here. We were boarding yesterday afternoon and this morning and are going out again in a few for one more run before we go home. The weather has been perfect and not very crowded up here either. I would imagine we'll make it up here one or two more weekends in the next month. I'll try to give you a heads up.

I came out yesterday about 3 or so. I just had me and my dog and went up north under the w bridge and tied up with some guys I know til it got dark. Was a good night. I made a lap around the lake looking for your boat but didn't see ya around. Where do you usually camp?

Bass Ackwardz

Mike,
We usually camp in Crow's Creek in the north electric right on the water. I actually left the Supra beached on the shore right down from the launch. We went out today and got some more good weather/water. I am slowly learning this wakeboarding thing. I get up every time and now can make it outside the wake, but still working on making it back across...lol.

Careful beaching your boat over there in crows creek's coves. Lots of rocks hidden under water that will do a number to your hull. I'd recommend anchoring out away from shore so you're in 3-4 ft of water. Save your underwater gear and your hull. :) I never beach my boat, there's too many expensive goodies underneath it. I'll just walk a little ways in.
