View Full Version : Exhaust Pipes

I am working on a stringer rebuild and am not sure what to do with the exhaust pipes. When I took everything apart the pipes were set in the foam and the foam provided support. In my rebuild I am not putting the foam back in so I am unsure what to do with them. Should I just let them sit on the floor? Maybe build some type of bracket to support them?

Albin, good question. I'm doing a stringer rebuild on my conbrio. I found it easier to remove the pipes for two reasons. First, it easier to get access to the foam that's around the pipes for foam removal. Second, it gives you easier access to reseal the exhaust ports at the transom while you have the floor/gas tank/foam removed from the boat. I have no leakage at the exhaust ports but might as well do a reseal while doing your resto. I've heard of these exhaust flanges at transom leaking causing eventual stringer problems. Hope this helps.

Thanks mlaosa, but that's not quite what I am asking and after reading through my post again I see the confusion.
I already have the pipes out.. and the new stringers are in. I am getting ready to put the new sole/floor down and need to put the pipes back into the boat first, but without the foam they just sit on the glass at the bottom of the boat. Is this right?

Understood. Sorry about the confusion. I'm planning to put cross braces from main stringer to the secondary with a "hole" cutout coated with lots of resin to support my pipes.

That sounds like a good idea, I may have to do something like that too.

Then I used a hole saw and cut them out.

They do not really rest on the holes though. Make sure to get plenty of room, as you might need it to get them to fit on the risers. Mine was a huge pain to get on. I had to take the riser off of the exhaust manifold to get the hoses on.
Good luck!

Hey Jasun, what size wood did you use for your upright part of stringers? 2x8's? And did you have to shave the bottom of the boards to fit the hull?

I laminated 2 3/4"pieces of plywood. I cut them at the best angle that I could. It doesn't have to be exact, as you can fill in with thickened polyester when you bed the stringers.

After it was all laid I wend back with a 40 grit flap wheel and rounded all the edges so that the fiberglass would lay better.

Thanks for the photos Jasun. I built a little bracket for the pipes to sit on and it is working well.
After I got the pipes in I placed the engine and am working on alignment. It has been a bear! I worked on it for a few hours last night with no luck. The engine mounts are very stiff and do not move freely making the alignment a huge pain. I sprayed a bunch of wd-40 on them to try to loosen them up with moderate success. I think today I am going to get some true penetrating oil to cover them with to see if that will help.

I had the same issue. I eventually pulled the motor again and pulled the motor mounts off of the engine while it was on the hoist. Cleaned them up real good although I did not replace the rubber bushings.

Made a world of difference in adjusting it. I would highly recommend doing that.

I also had to go back and lower my engine compartment because my mounts did not have enough adjustment to go down to meet the shaft. It was easy with the 40 grit flap wheel. Only thing lost was a little bit of time and pride.

I reglassed them and gel coated them.

With the correct height and the cleaned up motor mounts, it took me about 15 minutes to get it aligned.

Jasun, pulling the mounts and cleaning them is a great idea. I haven't had a chance to work on it again but I will pull the mounts out and clean them up tonight if I can.
