View Full Version : Thinking about learning to surf this year.

I think I'm going to try to learn to surf behind the salt this year. I was wondering if anyone has any ballast and pump recommendations. I currently have a 400 pound sack that fits in the ski locker. Would one more 750 pound bag on the backseat be a good start or do you think I would need more?
also, what kind of pump can I just tossed in the water? The one I have now to fill that sack is more like a live well pump that I have to prime.
Any recommendations are appreciated!

The attwood tsunami aerator pumps are the ticket. I'd get the 1200gph model. They're cheap on amazon but you need to get a little creative with your fittings. Pick up the pumps and head down to your local hardware store and work it out. I prefer spa hose because it doesn't kink or crush. Get the quick-connect bag fittings from WakeMakers (but don't order the pump from them..... http://www.wakemakers.com/fly-high-tsunami-pump.html)

I run two 750s in mine (one on the side of the engine and one in back of the engine.) I'd use a 400 in your ski locker, too. The more weight the better. It's worth spending the money to get a good setup now instead of spending half the money and all the time doing trial and error.

What I have done to save a few dollars is as follows. Get an attwood Tsunami pump on Ebay or amazon. Those will undoubtedly be the ones with the 1 1/8 input/output ports.

Buy this hose kit from wakemakers and put in on the inlet of the pump.

Then buy this fitting for the outlet of the pump:

In my opinion it's one of the more efficient ways to get yourself a pump setup. Of course, you also have to wire up the power source too, so you'll have to have a 12v wire/plug.

But really, it saves you $20 to $30 and you have to do your own wiring. So use the forum discount and get the pre-assembled tsunami pump if you really want to save hassle.

As far as weighting, when I listed my Supra Sunsport, I had to do the following.

750 on the surfside floor
300 under the rear seat
another 650 stacked on top of the 750, but pushed as far back on the rear seat as possible.

The problem with that setup is that your rear corner is SLAMMED and driving and chillin' isn't as fun. Also, if you have a normal fiberglass platform, the bottom lip of the platform will likely dig into the wave and rob you of push.

I'd say that 1500 to 2000 pounds is what's really needed to weight the DD supras for surfing.

An alterative would be to make yourself a "ghetto gate" (do a search and make one out of HDPE) and put your 400 as planned and then put 750's on each side of the engine on the floor.

Hey J,
By the end of the season I had more like 550 in the locker, 1100 in the surf side floor (an old school "couch"), and 540 in the bow with people crammed as far to the rear surf side corner as possible in my salt. And it still lacks some.
This is about the best we did:

Over the winter I've acquired a bag to fit the locker better for about 700lb, and a triangle bag to go under the bow seats (with some modification) for more like 700 and plumbed both of those into separate permanent pumps. The biggest thing that I learned last season that filling and draining 3 bags is stressful and killed the experience for me. I'm hoping to come up with the QD fittings to plumb the big bag in the floor into the new built in system so it's slightly configurable and mostly automagic. It's still a work in progress...

Send me some pics of your plumbing job. Would love to see it. I'd much rather be able to have it semi hard plumbed.

This post was useful to me:

That plus a little poking around at www.wakemakers.com and you'll be disturbing the peace in no time!

jetlink gave me this video that Wotan had made surfing behind his Salt. He looks like he has a good wake.

Korey, do you have a fiberglass swim deck?
