I have an '86 Saltare with the 454 - and the old points ignition system. I've had problems getting it to start - especially after sitting all winter. I do have it running, but I'm just doing some checks to make sure everything is ok.

I've found on the Internet that the resistance between the primary leads on the coil should be .75 ohms, and between the primary and secondary should be 10k ohms.

Mine tests 1.8 ohms on the primary and 7.1k ohms between the primary and secondary.

Is this normal?

Also, what an electronic ignition be worth the cost? Would it start quicker?

Thanks,
Barry

Points on a boat = trouble. Solid state is the way to go. Put it in & forget about it.

Go electronic. This link will get you to the best buy in town -- $289.00 for new distributor, cap, electronic egnition module, coil and heavy duty wires. You wouldn't be disappointed.

That is a good deal. I don't really need the wires or cap - they are both pretty new.

What about the kit that simply converts the existing distributor to the electronic style:

Would these work just as well?

It looks like one of those would work depending on your current ignition. My guess is you have a Mallory ignition, but check and see and give those guys a call they know their stuff.

One other tip, spray your current distributor with WD40. Mallory has little screens on the side just spray in there while the motor is running. It will help keep your advance mechanism rust free and moving smoothly.
