View Full Version : 1991 Sunsport - Won't Start

Hey, guys.

I recently purchased a 1991 Sunsport with the 351 EFI.
Took it out for a spin with the gf today.
I had only taken it out twice prior, and was having a loss of power (to the point it cut out) under an initial load, but I could feather it out and it would run.
Then, it went away... and I didn't have any more after running some 93 octane and a little seafoam through.
It started fine today, but cut out again.
I watched the temp, oil pressure and voltage gauges and they were all good throughout.
Also, wan with not radio to hear the boat properly.
We pushed through it and it was doing fine, but an hour later on the way back across the lake it cut out.
It would not restart, even after sitting for 45 minutes.
I checked all of the connections, and they were all good.
I pulled the line from under the fuel pump and it had plenty of fuel.
I had not other tools on me to do anything else (I know... stupid).
Going to take a look at it tomorrow on the driveway.
Will probably start by ordering a new fuel filter and checking to ensure I have spark and proper voltage.
I am fairly familiar with the 351, as I had the same engine in an 81 Ski Supreme (added a Petronix so it was close ;)
Just not the EFI. I realize there are subtleties I am not aware of

Any tips or thoughts confused:?

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

I would think the gas is suspect and may have water in it. I would probably drain the tank just to be sure.

Thanks, 2500HD.

I just went out to do some trouble shooting and take a few pics for the forum and bam, it started right up.

Does that change anybody's thoughts on things?
Could these be two separate issues?

Sounds electrical. Get it to do it again and check voltage at the coil.

Hey, guys.
Got a new distributor cap and wires and took off some of the old electronic bs.
It fires right up like a champ, now.
Runs 4700 rpms @ 41mph.
And started every time last time out (although I was knocking on wood each time).
