Im going to look at 21v with 170 hrs this weekend that doesn't have a motor or trans. It will be my first boat so I'm looking for advice. I am mechanically inclined so putting a new motor in will not be an issue. A couple questions I have are what are the main things to look out for and where is the best place to buy a complete motor. Thanks in advance

What happened to the motor and trans? My first thought is that the boat must have been submerged. I'd check all the electrical and look for signs of heavy corrosion/moisture. I assume you know what an engine/trans will cost -- I'd factor in quite a bit more when you negotiate on price.

For a 2007, I would look hard at the upholstery... that's just old enough that if it spent all of its time outside, uncovered, the upholstery will be trashed or else very close to the end of its life.

As wotan said, I'd be concerned that if it sank, all the other electrical stuff will be trouble, too. Even if it's dry at the moment.

If, on the other hand, it was covered all the time and it just had the drivetrain stolen or whatever, it could be a good deal.

For negotiation purposes, I'd call a dealer for a price on a complete new engine and transmission, installed. I'm not 100% sure a dealer would sell you a complete package like that for you to install yourself. But for pricing purposes, it's a place to look. Skidim also sells complete engines and transmissions, that's another source for price information, if not the final purchase.

A lot has to do with what region you live, but this can give you a general idea of what your going to spend. . .

Do people really steal inboard motors? That's a ton of work and time to get those out. Outboards are one thing but a v8 with a tranny attached!

It's like stealing cars...they steal the whole thing, pull the parts, and dump the hulk. So yes, it's done.

Definitely find out what happened before making an offer.
