My future father in law has a 1972 GW invader with a gold metallic gel coat. It is super dull. Is there any trick to wet sanding this vs just one solid color gel coat?

This stuff has always worked good for me. . . http://www.amazon.com/3M-Marine-Restorer-16-9-fl-Ounce/dp/B0000AY65X

I did wet sand a Nautique I owned that had a dark red gel coat band. If I remember right I started with 800 then 1000 then 1500 then used the 3m restorer/wax turned out great and looked good as long as I kept it waxed.

My metal flake boat I owned never looked bad enough that I felt like I had to wet sand.
