[2001Sunsport]

I've noticed all the other boat forums have a thread like this so I figured I'd start one for us. I found this 1995 Supra Comp ts6m with a GT40 engine on Craigslist, it's also on onlyinboards.com and I believe the seller posted it on the forums at one point.

Not trying to knock the seller too hard, but this boat is far from perfect condition. From what I saw when I looked at it, it appears that it was left uncovered all winter. The vinyl is black and yellow, the rear seats are cracking and the driver footwell was filled with water. To winterize it he said he removed the freeze plugs. When I looked at the boat there was one freeze plug removed on the front passenger side of the engine. The rest of the freeze plugs appeared to have been pushed out slightly and have rust stains dripping below them. I would be very concerned about this engine block having major issues at this point.

Just wanted to give a heads up on this one in case any of you were considering looking at this boat. For some reason my phone isn't letting me post the link.

Yea, it was a beautiful boat at some point. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.

yeah it's for sale. a lot of the other forums have threads about it which are funny to read through. i myself wouldn't be caught dead in one--i think it's the pontiac aztec of the wake boat world. $40k can be much better spent on a used "real" wake boat.

This is not a solicitation, but I do know the owner of this boat. It's an '86 Nautique but the engine, trans, gauges, etc are all the same as that era Supra. If someone's looking for an engine, trans, parts, and/or trailer... it's not a bad way to go. Knowing how much a new windshield can cost, you might be able to recover a decent amount just by selling the windshield to someone on the CC forums. Anyway, this popped up on my radar and as much as it breaks my heart to see this guy sell, you can see from the pics the boat is a wreck. A good engine/transmission though! It also has a nice ACME prop on it, not mentioned.

I wanted to email the guy but not really my place. The boat had 886 hours on it when I looked at it and only has 25 hours more so he clearly found something wrong with it which is likely why he is dumping it.

Lol that's great. After I wrote that post I thought about it for a while and then I sent him a text asking if it was the same boat and he acknowledged it. I then stated it was a 351 and not the 454 and also asked if he fixed the stringers. He then asked "how do you know it's a 351" and "whats wrong with the stringers?" ahhhh because I test drove the boat and almost bought it and the stringers are rotten lol. Then he comes back and says, yeah I know they are rotten but the boat drives and runs perfect...

He's for sure going to take advantage of someone when he sells it, poor guy isn't gonna know what hit him without doing some research, glad I did mine.

I went and looked at a boat and they guy kept oogling over how clean it was. I drive 2 hours, check it over and it looked good. Pulled the dipsticks, and the drive was full of milk.

He tried to say he had no clue, and would have it serviced (probably just an oil change)

He calls me back two weeks later to say they changed the oil and now it runs great....


That was 3 months ago. Its still on craigslist...

I wonder if its really a 454 and the seller is mistaken. Supras never came with an olds motor afaik. different bellhousing bolt patterns so the usual trans options won't fit without some kind of adapter. Wish there were some engine pics in that ad

$12k-$13k is about top dollar for these boats. I would be concerned that they went almost to the stirngers but didn't bother. That's a lot of work to do a floor and cheap out on doing the stringers when they're right there. More likely the cap was no removed and the floor was just patched in or even worse laid over the old rotten floor. Looks real nice but check it over closely for shortcuts and rotten stringers. I wouldn't pay over $10k if everything checks out fine, on account of original stringers that will eventually need to be replaced.

As long as the mechanicals are good and strong (engine and trans) and the test drive is acceptable why not?

Hours on a boat are like miles on a car, irrelevant. What matters is condition. Mechanicals (engine, trans, driveline, etc.) are cheap and easy to repair. Gel and glass work is not easy for most and there is a learning curve. I'd be more concerned with condition, specifically of the hull and gel. Interior looks pretty good in the pictures, if there are things that need replacement or attention take that into account on price.

I'm not certain how most newer boats are but I know there are wiring configurations where the hour meter will keep recording just by leaving the key on but without the engine running. This can cause misleading hours for boats with speakers and interior lighting.

Have been toying over buying this for a rebuild.... currently have '88 comp in near perfect condition. Maybe throw an electric motor in this one and rebuild the 454 for the comp one day.... boy do I dream.

Wait a few more years and then harvest the lumber to replace the stringers.
It's a win win for the environment.

Round windshield SHOULD mean composite stringers. Mid model year 92 was the changover for supra. He doesn't mention the year or stringers so likely doesn't know what he's got. 55 is less than I paid for a wood stringer 'salt with similar Interior issues 4 years ago - the market is hotter now, so I'd call that fair to low. But it's worth what someone will pay!! Go get it!

Will need a interior 3-4k but even with that its a steal at 5500.

On the up-side, the floor is visible through the holes in the carpet, so you shouldn't have a hard time figuring out if the deck is composite or plywood. ;) If the engine is solid, 5500 is a deal.

That's a very good price for a composite stringer Saltare, despite the small block and worn out interior. Used to be $10k at least for something like that, and no way it would have a tower.

It has a perfect attendance record for the event (6 years straight) along with two of the best owners a classic Supra could ask for. It's a head turner on the water and runs and sounds great. Hate to not see it at next year's event but hopefully it finds a new owner that loves it as much as Mr and Mrs Loadup do.
