89 Mariah Starter Firing Randomly

Out of nowhere this season my starter in my 89 Mariah (454) started engaging on its own once I insert my key and simply unlock the switch. Mind you I am not turning the key to engage the starter. The boat will actually start just fine but after it does the starter will attempt to re-engage and grind on the fly wheel. So being an older starter I ponied up and replaced it but the problem persists. Anyine have an incling as to what might be causing this problem?

I have an 89 saltare and have had the same thing happened I realized that the key and ignition gets stuck in the start position so if I hear it happen I put a little pressure on the key to turn it to the left and it usually will click into the run position but if u push to hard obviously it will go to the off position... Someone can chime in on the technical specifics but that has solved it for me

Just buy a new ignition... Like 15-$25.
