View Full Version : 88 Saltare Rebuild

Hello Everyone,

I've picked up an 88 saltare from a fellow forum member, who had started down the path of addressing the stringers however the project ended up sitting for around a year or so. His thread is here: https://forum.supraboats.com/showthread.php?17487-My-88-Saltare-Project

So far, I've confirmed the engine is pretty much shot, but I was expecting that going in.

Oil pan and a chunk of the missing cylinder wall

I'll try to post a picture of how its sitting right now

More to come over the next several weeks as I start in on the stringer repair.

Good luck on the rebuild. Looks like you've got good bones to start with, but sounds like the engine is done.

I think I may have figured out how to attach a few pictures.

Here's what was rattling around in the oil pan...couple rods, part of the cam, pieces of the connecting rod that snapped and bits of the cylinder wall.

And a picture of how the hull is currently sitting

That's some carnage

Carnage for sure! Hard to tell exactly what went wrong or in what order but the engine was supposedly rebuilt 2 owners back and only had ~ 30 hrs on it since the rebuild when it failed on the guy I got it from.

A couple bearings were trashed and I'm guessing something may have went south with the crankshaft causing one of the connecting arms to snap and then the portion still connected to the shaft beat the heck out of the top walls of cylinder 1&2. A couple of the lifters were also trashed so this could caused the cam to bind up in some way because the chunk you see in the picture posted above broke in the middle leaving a total of 3 separate lengths of the cam.

In any case total carnage ensued.

I spent a few hours grinding this afternoon and was able to get the starboard side 90% done. I've just got to clean up the area where the stringers meet the transom and a small area near the mid ship drain and then will be ready to bed in the stringers on that side. Aside from being dusty, itchy, and cramped in weird positions, I was a little surprised how well it went.

My approach was to use a dremel tool with a flat cutter to take down the lip from the old stringers and then two 4.25 angle grinders. For the angle grinders I was swapping between a harbor freight and dewalt...I ended up killing the dewalt. The only issue with the HF one is that I lost the screw in handle and the head kept getting pretty hot, but it got me through the day. This evening I picked up a 7" grinder from my brother-in-law so I should be in business going forward.

The boat purchase came with 40 gallons of vinyl ester and 25yd of 1708. The resin is unopened, but has been sitting about 16 months. The label from US Composites indicates that it only has a 3 month shelf life. If I mix a batch up and it kicks off, is it good to go, or could there be problems down the road?

I was talking to a local boat builder and he indicated that he always "hangs" his boats when doing the stringers, especially when doing service work. He indicated that the bedding while in the trailer could cause issues...From what I recall, most if not all the build threads I've looked at showed folks replacing everything while the boat is on the trailer. Has anyone noticed any issues?

As far as the engine goes, I'm leaning toward getting a reman unit from CME in Johnston SC. With everything else going on, I'd rather just get a plug & play unit and hopefully see the lake this summer vs working through doing a build on the engine myself. Anyone have any opinions of CME, or reman units in general?

Starting in on the rudder.

Following this thread...big thanks to TitanTn and the others who contributed. https://forum.supraboats.com/showthread.php?10163-Repairing-a-older-style-rudder-port/page4

Most everything came out...one of the upper seals is stuck, I'm going to have to dig it out with a pick or something...and the lock ring on the very bottom has rust/weld itself into the grove so I'll have to figure something out there as well. There are threads for 2 grease fittings but only one grease fitting was present.
http://i.imgur.com/8qEBYMN.jpg

Also noticed the rudder looks to have some sort of cavitation burn near the top. I'm thinking I'll just grind it smooth for now.

Yes I would snap a chalk line center of shaft log and Down the middle of the boat and measure side to side off that to keep the engine mounting square and true

Damn, Cooose...looks like you ground it smooth as a baby's butt.

The big guy in the middle makes it easy....the down side is that I got a little to much dust on the googles and ended up grinding through the cord of the smaller harbor freight unit on the right. I'll have to repair the cord on it since I burned up the other 4-1/4" dewalt unit (not pictured...already in the trash)

I would look at a roller model like 94 351 , you don't have to worry about breaking in the cam and also zinc additives , the cost is not that much more vs reliability

I believe most people have reinforced their lower hulls with ratchet straps or temporary wood braces. The gunnels will flex out if left unsupported and make it difficult to fit the cap back on.

That's a good point Wotan , floor height too , I left a lip of the old floor height around the inner edge of the gunnel to make sure the sides would sit flush . I would just take a lot of measurements of height and stringer position .

Part of my challenge is that I took on this project midstream from the PO after it set for around a year. To my knowledge they have. It been supported in any way...I can measure now but my guess is the gunnels have already relaxed if the are going to at all. Any chance anyone took some measurements gunnel to gunnel in a few places on their rebuilds?

Just check floor height and snap some lines and go off that , once you have the main stringers bedded you can belt sand or shave , but it's best to get it in the money . Don't stress to much about it , it will come to you .

392 trips in and out of the boat on Saturday yielded this.

I'm using a combo of marine ply and some left over PT 4x4's which have been sitting around for a few years.

I'll be looking to bed this side down and tab in once we get a little warmer weather.

PL work well , you can hold the stringer off the hull with foam and then bed with PL . I would recommend using it in warmer weather though , cold it seems like it took a week before full cure .

But it sure beat mixing up cabosill and glass for some peanut butter .

Do I need to sand away all the bilge paint before glassing? There is some bilge type paint on the backside where I'm strengthening the swim bracket mounts and I'm trying to get a feel for how much of it needs to come off.

Yes, it needs to be sanded off. The resin and fiberglass have to bond with something and you don't want it to be the paint.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but thank you for confirming. Everytime I think I'm close to done with grinding I find more.

I do need some help I'm hoping some of those who've come before me can help with.

Since I picked up the boat already torn apart, I don't know how the vent hoses were run, nor where the blower or blower(s) were positioned, so I'm looking for help from the forum members on what to do here. I've seen in many of there rebuilds that there is typically some sort of box or something on the transom where the hoses tie in, but I haven't come across anything like this. I know I will be replacing 100% of the tubing along with the blowers and wiring, but I'm not sure what lengths to buy, etc, etc,...it would be much easier if I'd taken it apart in the first place. I appreciate any insight here!

I also placed an order today with US Composites for some Expoy which I can use at colder temperatures so I can go ahead and proceed with bedding the stringers and getting them set up. I decided I didn't want to roll the dice using the vinyl ester from the PO which had been sitting around for 14 months or so...i figure I can use it to seal up plywood which I will use above the floor, so if it doesn't work out it won't be too big of a deal.

I'm also planning to place an order with CME Engines by Friday to get a long block. The block I have is indeed trashed so I'll be into it for ~ 3k shipped to my door with a 12mo / 300hr warranty.

We are looking to close on a small lake cabin at the end of the month so, I'm really looking to pick up the pace a bit so I can get this thing on the water this summer. The downside is that the cabin is going to need some work so it will be competing for the time I can spend on the boat.

Just a little update.

I've gotten the main stringer on the stbd side bedded down with PL and plan to start on the fillets and tabbing on Sunday. I was constantly fighting the weather and finally broke down and picked up a 12x25 tent from pep boys on sale for 169 so I can finally make some headway on the glassing.

The rudder assembly is rebuilt, and I've gotten the rebuild kits for the Sherwood RW pump and Holley, so will start in on those soon.

Parts are starting to show up pretty much daily. My goal is to get her on the water by August but with any luck it could be sooner.

Back on post # 7 I mentioned that the boat came with 40 gallons of Vinyl ester, and I got around to testing it last week, but it did not kick off. I decided to order up some new hardner (MEKP) from US Comp and gave it a test tonight.

I mixed up 1/2 pt and thickened it with some cabosil.

I just slathered it on some scraps laying around to see if it is going to work for my fillets.
http://i.imgur.com/BK6d4rx.jpg
After about an hour it had gotten a little firm and rubbery

Here's what I left in the pot, it seems to have kicked off like its supposed to...it was hot enough to melt through the pot, and was hard as a rock.

Question for you pro's out there who have been down this road before.

What are the absolute must things to do before putting the cap back on. My plan is to pull new speaker and light wires around the boat and maybe redo the pvc channels or at
least extend them somewhat in areas...anything else I'm not thinking of?

Alright, so it's been quite a while....I'll try to catch everyone up.

Progress on the glass has been super slow on account of the weather and no garage. Luckily (i guess) we've only had snow/ice 3-4 times so far that has required me to go out and knock the snow off the tarp roof. With the weather as cold as it has been, I've moved some of the glass work indoors. All that's left is some final floor supports.

I'm using 3/4" marine ply, which is coated in Epoxy and glassed on both sides. On the top of the floor I plan to Epoxy & glass wood blocking and cleats to the deck surface and anything that needs to be secured to the deck will be screwed into the "sacrificial" blocking/cleats.

I've also significantly improved drainage between the stringers such that water that may find it's way in can also find it's way out.

..I forgot to grab a pick of the inside of the gearbox assembly. When reinstalling you have to keep a spring loaded with a ball bearing pressed against the throttle shaft, so one hand was doing that and the other was covered in grease.

There is also this little spring with a smaller ball bearing which is on the trans lock out side

All Done

Other than shooting one of the ball bearings across the basement and the ensuing search mission to find it, the job was very simple and straight forward.

Perfect timing! I tried putting my control assembly back in without having the original pictures that I took of it, but didn’t the the patients to figure it out. Does this pic show the correct positioning in the neutral position?

Also.... sad news.... I believe my reverse isn’t working...

Yes, this is in neutral. Ask google to find you a video with the title "Morse MV Style Throttle Control Service"...the video does a great job detailing the controller, though they do not open up the gearbox.

Whats up with your reverse...are you thinking it's on the trans side or controls side?

That video was really helpful, I can to finish putting it back together now.

Yeah, i believe it’s the transmission. I worked my way down and isolated and transmission and got nothin. I found an old catalog on the Borg Warner tranny and it looks like all the reverse gears are at the mouth of the gear box, so it shouldn’t be too messy of a repair.

Got some time to work on the flooring

I know it's a lot of work, but after seeing how the manufacturer did it, and now seeing well it's going back together - how much confidence do you have about what the end result will be? Last 50 years with proper care? I love seeing these older boats going back together knowing that they're now built way better than they were on an assembly line. Looking great man.

TitanTN - it's an interesting point. I think that the drainage holes alone could have delayed the rot and breakdown of the original stringers considerably. No drainage + open cell foam equals rot. I've addressed both of these in my rebuild so hopefully with proper care I won't see any rot for 20+ years

Fixed a hole that was in the bow locker.

I glassed over the entire hole and once it kicks off I'll grind it smooth and re-drill the opening.

You're doing your own upholstery too? That's where I abstain. Looking forward to see how this goes for you.

Apparently I'm just a sucker for punishment!

I was planning on trying to go back with the existing seats for this season, but when I started digging the interior back out of storage, all the wood in the bow area was pretty well rotted out. I decided I couldn't justify putting in a crap interior after all the other work that's gone into it. Hopefully it turns out decent.

A couple of updates.

I built a gantry crane out of lumber to lift the cap and position it on the hull.

Here is the cap hanging from the crane. You can't see it in the picture, but the hull is on the trailer directly behind the cap.

https://i.imgur.com/GEB59PW.jpg

Here is the hull being pulled under the cap. I hooked up an ATV winch and mounted it to the front hitch on the expedition and it pulled the hull into position quite nicely. In order to "steer" the hull I would just move the truck forward or backward which would change the angle on the winch.

https://i.imgur.com/3XrH9zj.jpg

And here is the cap loosely fitted to the hull. I will still have to raise it in order to complete the wiring and some final glass work on the underside of the cap to reinforce some mounts for a tower.

I got the "wow, it finally looks like a boat" from Mrs Cooose.

Alright, well i guess an update is overdue...

I reinforced underneath the cap where i intend to bolt in the tower. I cut to fit a piece of wood, then epoxied & clamped it into position. Then I came back and smoothed the edges with fillets and glassed it in with 2 layers of 1702.

Here's a shot of the underside of the cap, with just the wood expoxied in, before fillets & glassing.

I didn't have the right clamping setup, so I had to improvise.

Repaired / rebuilt the seat bases..

Basically all of them were completely shot except for 2 where I was able to patch in just the corners that were rotted out. Here's an example of one where the corner was patched

Built a new sun deck...i really need to consider getting more clamps.

Here is the finished sun deck and a sneak peak at the color scheme for the upholstery.

Got the upholstery done for the bow playpen area. I think it turned out pretty decent for it being the very first time I've done any upholstery work.

It will look even better once the cap is good and cleaned.

Slowly I'm starting to have more boat parts in the boat, than in the basement :)

Wow Coose - it's been a while. Thanks for the update and it's good to see that you're still making progress. I would assume that your goal is to be on the water this summer. How's the engine coming?

Hey TitanTn, Yes I'm targetting this summer for sure, hopefully sometime in the next month or so.

The engine is coming along, I should have a couple pics to share in the next day or two.
