View Full Version : Where to start?! New to me 2002 Supra Launch boat owner needs help!

Bought my first boat ever and I'm finding there is not as much info in one place for boats as there are for dirt bikes (i.e. - thumpertalk) and cars (nasioc and bimmerforums.com).

Edit: I found this manual which will be very useful... any other comments below will be much appreciated!

http://www.indmar.com/Libraries/Manuals/2015_GM_Based_Operators_Manual.sflb.ashx

First off I bought a 2002 Supra Launch. It is not in the best of shape but was around $10k less than other similar boats and so I figured with a little elbow grease and some parts I could more than bridge that gap. The fluids look fine and I'll replace them anyhow. Plugs don't indicate any problems but the spark plug wires are a bit rusted and need replacing. There are some "air" hoses that are not connected anymore and so those will need replacing. Some other hoses look like they are worn and I'll post pics to help identify them. Lastly, the trailer has one wheel lug stud missing and all the bolts holding the carpeted wood are rusted and the washers are loose. Hoping it will be good for another year so I can fix it all next winter (with exception of the wheel lug stud).

Here is a preliminary list of parts I'd like to get but I'm not 100% sure about part numbers, etc. Could anyone help me out with that? I've already ordered the Clymer manual for the Indmar engines and I'll get that next week. Also, if there are any other items I should have on this list it would be much appreciated. I'll upload some pictures tonight at home and I have a few more questions about some of the things that don't look quite right to me.

1. impeller kit - Johnson
2. impeller puller tool (I love making excuses to buy new tools)
3. fuel filter
4. spark plugs
5. spark plug wires
6. oil - 15w40
7. oil filter
8. transmission oil
9. pcv valve
10. hose for exhausting engine bay area to back of boat.

I tested the batteries last night and they are fine reading 12.5 and 12.6 volts after sitting for 6 months. I already bought a Marinco 2 battery charger and they are being charged as we speak.

Cheers!
Daniel

The boat was "winterized" but still had a lot of water in it. Last night I started off by vacuuming all the remaining water from the bottom of the boat. I also removed all the remaining water from the ballast sac up front. There is a lot of goey grime I'll have to eventually clean up but for now I'm thinking of getting the boat ready to run and then clean it up as I go. I am hoping that mess of wires will hold up until the winter when I can redo all the wiring properly. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/a942f5713a5e89ccd59120e975783f97.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/f82ffdb171cd1eb506e9791bef73ccb8.jpg

I am going to get a Johnson impeller kit. If this is a raw water open cooling system then the lines should be empty correct?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/f1e26c08e8e9a2e62c711acbaca9f418.jpg

I am a bit worried about the hose that is rubbed up against the side of some sort of canister. I haven't had time investigate which filters and components are what but any insight on this would be helpful otherwise I'll figure it out when I get the manual early next week. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/490ab273579c5e97e42d0c53d4055fe3.jpg

Does anyone know how red transmission type looking fluid would end up around that bolt on top of the throttle body? How clean does the spark arrest /air filter have to be? I see light all around. If I just use brake clean to clean it up a bit more will I be okay? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/c80fcfa14e6c86ebda4392b06f4bc260.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/747aebcbcf42916f4749d6818c5b7196.jpg

Messy, dirty wiring. Needs some cleaning. Spark plugs and wires will be changed up. Hopefully everything else will hold up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170504/20e291234604d1fa708992e2af276afd.jpg

Looks good man , just make sure to tie things up around moving parts , like shaft and coupler . The hoses that touch anything can be adjusted , engine looks fine , just drive it don't try opening cans of worms without knowing what worms to open first !

The boat will choose when it wants your money ! Ha ha . Just check the fluids and make sure your seals are good for prop shaft

Good advice. I'll stick to the basics. I see no signs of leaking fluids so I'm off to a better start than my old bmw... lol...

All the air hoses from the engine bay to the back of the boat and from the hull to the front of the boat need to be replaced. Any suggestions on which hose to use? Is there something better than the black crap that came with the boat that's not too expensive?

I'm replacing most of mine as well. In my 96 La Brisa, the hose feeding fresh air into the bilge at the front is 4". The hose on the blower to the back exhaust vents is 3". I don't think there is anything "better" out there honestly, I just found some on amazon by searching "bilge vent hose", wasn't crazy expensive - but cheaper than the almost dollar per foot at Skidim...

Your pics have confirmed my suspicions that I was missing a blower tho.. I've still got to figure out the routing of hoses behind the gas tank, because mine are all rotted out (sigh!).

90% sure that Sewer hose is 3" and is WAAAAY better quality than the air hose that everyone uses from the factory. Lot's of people use it for blowing heat around. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Camco-20-Heavy-Duty-Sewer-Hose/14504318

Looking at your boat photos -- it's had a tough life. But the exterior and interior look amazing (somehow!) Any chance that it sank? Otherwise, I don't know how everything got so dirty and moldy looking. It seems like more than just "we didn't let it dry out."

Does it run? That's your first thing to find out. I wouldn't start taking things apart or throwing money at it until it runs.

What I would do, though, is go through your trailer. Bleed the brakes, replace the wheel stud, grease the bearings, etc. Make sure that is solid because there's nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the road.

And then I'd start cleaning. Also, you don't need an impeller puller. They usually come right out with your fingers.

Awesome. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Yes the boat runs and the reason it was so wet is because the cover had a big tear and it was left outside in the rain for part of it's life. I saw a youtube video of the boat running just weeks before I bought it and I know where the guy lives so I'm confident the motor is solid

Hey I have the same boat in gray!

Cooling hoses may still have water in them depending on if/how it was winterized.

This, although you may need a needle nose....its no big deal though.

I ran new bilge vent hose back to the blower last season, although my blowers are both mounted on the stern...good idea to keep them out of the bilge/water?
I ran new fuel lines when I did the bilge hose too...they were starting to get cracked near the fuel pump.

That's how my fuel hose is too, no issues. And..that's not a filter, that's the lift pump or pre-pump for the fuel pump in front of it.18075

Red fluid is probably from fogging oil, I'd clean the spark arrestor (the dirty silver thing on top of the throttlebody) with carb cleaner...only use the brake clean if the carb cleaner doesn't work....just cheaper.

I have the 2000 version of this boat, has been very solid once i got rid of some of the gremlins. Hopefully with your model they do not have the Medallion black control box for the gauges. If your gauges do not work and you have the MDC unit from Medallion there is a pretty simple (but time consuming) work around which eliminates it.

If you need pics of anything as you are working on yours let me know.

AFAIK all the guages work. Yes, I am expecting some gremlins hence the reason I am doing so much research. Unfortunately I spent my spare time in the last 4 weekends working on and cleaning my 92 325i to get it running buttery smooth again to sell (struts, shocks, rear wheel bearing, window regulator, spark plugs, cleaned fuel injectors and replaced pintles, fuel filter, tranny, diff and MT oil, serpentine belt amd some other stuff) and I wish I had that time to work on the boat. My wife wants to take the boat out next weekend for a quick ride which I said to her was fine but to expect we might uncover some issues!

Do you have a pic of the MDC box so I know what I'm looking for?

Thanks.
Daniel

That is it - the MDC is a black box under the dash about 4"x8"x3/4" thick. if you gauges are working it should not be an issue.

I think the manual is going to pay for itself 10 fold. First issue I encountered is that I may be using the wrong spark plugs? The manual states that in 2002 there is a different plug with a different gap. Does anyone know where I could cross reference engine model to plug spec for certain? I didn't get a chance last night but I will find the engine serial number maybe contact indmar? I already know that the plugs used right now are the ones states for the prior year but I am not sure that it's the correct plug. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170510/83570242c919241294cd093fb04fed82.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170510/79862ef6963c7a525d65f943b82de18b.jpg
