Here are some pics of my 1989 sunsport before and after installing a
New Dimensions custom tower. I purchased new in 89 it now has 600 hours
and is in like new cond. I also installed a new Kenwood stereo with 4 kicker
gunwale speakers and a 400 watt Diamond amp to the fusion 3 way tower speakers. The radio is now in the side storage compartment under the dash and I installed a remote on the drivers side in front of the gear shifter . After removing the old radio I built a new glove box 4 times the size of the old one but it still it looks the same from inside the boat. I will try to send more pics when it comes out of storage. My boat has been outstanding and I am considering a new 24 launch but I don't think I
could ever sell my first pride & joy 89.

Fine looking boat! I have an 88 Sunsport. Do you happen to have the owners manual for yours? I have been trying to find one.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply until tonight. Would you be able to photocopy the manuals? Drop me a message at the e-mail for this site. Thanks. One of these days after the rain stops I need to get some pictures of my ride up...

Purple
Go to Planet Nautique website there you can download a copy of the PCM manual.
The Older Supras used PCM ford based engines. The owners manual is somewhat large
I wonder if this would be something that the forum should put on line it would help
others looking for the older manuals.

I downloaded the PCM manuals from there already. I was looking for the actual owner's manual. Trying to figure out available options and such before I start some projects this year, maybe figure out what the open area under the glove box is for... Thinking about putting a sub in there.

wow, that's a clean looking boat! never seen that color accent stripe...is it pink/purple?

figure out what the open area under the glove box is for... Thinking about putting a sub in there.

i don't know what it's for but i cut an opening at the bottom big enough for my batteries to slide thru. opens the area up under the spotter's seat for drier storage than under the back seats too.

The boat is a Classic model the hull is rose and antelope the accent stripe is pink.
I Took a lot of sh*t for the pink over the years but it fits with the other colors.
I also use the area under the spotters side dry storage for the second battery I moved the #1 battery under the dash years ago. I found that with two batters on the drivers side
makes the wake off center.

There are 75 pages in the owners manual too much to post.Let me know what areas you need I will fax them to you. If the forum wants to post the manual I will work something out.
I have 2 amps both are under the dash as well as the sub and battery. Very tight but
works perfect and still plenty of room. that way the dry storage is still wide open and less chance of the amps being damaged.Let me know if you want pics. I may also have the sales brochure from 89 wife says we have it but I'm not sure .

That is seriously a cherry sunsport you got there! Where did you come upon a factory tower for that? That tower looks great on there. I'm interested in putting a tower on my boat, but I won't do it if it doesn't look right.

michael hunter
03-26-2009, 09:17 AM
Go to New Dimensions towers. They were the only builder I found that makes a
true fit tower its all welded construction and no adapters or ball joints to loosen.
They are higher price but IMO well worth it its not something that you can change later.
Let me know if you need tips on installing I have pics of the process.
Good luck

I have a 42x64 pole barn 14' tall with 12' doors. I used to have to pull the swim platform
and disconnect to put the boat in the garage. When I built 12 years ago I made sure
I had enough room to build my dream garage. I never have to lower the tower or remove the swim platform. I don't even unhitch the van, just pull the rig in and close the door I have been planning this set up for many years.

Its been a long road to get where I am. I don't think I could ever go back to a garage again.
I built the pole barn myself with help from my 100lb wife. The barn builders wanted too much so we did it our self. I had to hire help for the roof trusses [44' long] It took 2 months to build in the winter Its been well worth the effort.

mapleleaf
03-30-2009, 08:54 PM
Well it looks great, so I hope it was a labour of love.... I've been there on 40' plus trusses they're a handful. It really does look awesome, those tall doors are amazing, and I'm still blown away when I see your Sunsport, it really has been in the water??!!!!
I'm just settling in to my mid thirties, the barns a ways off, for that matter, in the city, so's the garage......
The wife and I aren't planning on being in the city too much longer!!!!!

Its the country life for me I am on 11 acres. When I was in my 30s it was only a distant dream. The boat has a little over 700 hours I think the key is not being left out in the weather and sun . There has been a lot of maintenance over the years always cleaned after using and a major detail and tighten every 1-2 months.

wow, that's a nice pic. the barn is more than words can say....i don't even have a garage. my boat is parked on the side of the house.

you're so right about keeping it out of the sun. i have a heavy duty tarp draped all over mine...down to the trailer all around, including the teak platform. it's a little ghetto but the price is right and it works.

take those stripes off and you'd never know it's from the 80's.

i don't want to muck up your thread with a pic of another boat. so, here's a link to a pic of an '89 sunsport without the stripes. it's not nearly as clean as yours though...just to show what the same boat looks like stripeless

I say ditch the stripe only if it is too faded or damaged to look nice. When the stripe is flawless I think it looks great!

The stripes on mine are like new the blue waves have been replaced. I had them made locally the old ones were damaged by fuel over flowing out the vent and fill tube.
Its been a long time since I put that much gas in it.
At this point I don't want to change the stock look of the boat. I have had it so long I
can.t bring myself to change anything more. Well maybe a tower Bimini?

Salty87

i hear ya. i think they're just a peeve of mine. mine were in bad shape though. yours would be even harder to get off since they're in good shape.

question for you michael...what color red is your hull?...dragon/regal red?

looking at a gel coat kit for my buddy's boat.

thx

Hey I just wanted to say I love your boat!! I was looking at spending about 20k until I looked at your boat and saw how great these boats look with a tower installed. So thank you, you saved me 13k. I just bought one less than a week ago and im starting to update it asap. Its not in perfect condition like yours but great condition for being 20 years old and I couldnt beat the price. I already have a tower for it off of a 07 tige. And I just booked a apt. to get a full vinyl wrap for the boat to take it to gloss black with custom gloss white lettering on the sides and back. New grey carpet on order and gauges. On the audio side im going with all new kicker interior speakers, sony headunit, jl marine amp and 4 6 1/2s on the tower. Im gonna start posting pictures of the transition from stock 89 style to custom. Here is some pictures of the boat hope you guys like them........ :) Also how do I post big pictures like yours on here??

Boat looks great Killa! What year? That tower looks very nice. I would not recommend putting regular 6.5s on the tower. Get something with a horn and designed for playing behind the boat. I am very happy with my KickerKMT6 for $240. Did you get a deal on the wrap?

Welcome to the forum, that's one sweet Sunsport you are going to love it.
Its so nice to have so much activity about older Supras here seems like
we pick up a new member every day. Sunsports are more popular now than they ever were in 89.
What part of the country do you live?
I assume you have thoroughly checked the stringers and floor for rot.
Its the achilles heel for pre 92 Supras.

AllKillaNofilla
06-02-2009, 11:57 AM
Its a 1989 the floor is in perfect condition other than needing new carpet and it runs like a dream we took it out for a quick spin and it started the first time. The speakers in it are original from 89 lol and dont sound the best so a full audio update is one of the first things im doing ..... Any other problem areas I should look at besides the floor??? The boat and myself reside on lake Norman in Charlotte nc witch is a huge show off and party lake thats why im getting the wrap done on the boat luckily I have a friend doing it all for 500$ witch is a steal of a deal.... at least I think

what type of speakers do you have??

michael hunter
06-02-2009, 06:51 PM
I reworked the sound system two years ago. I went with kicker 6.5 in the gunnel's.
10" kicker sub and amp under the dash . Fusion 3 way tower speakers and diamond amp.
I am no expert on stereos but it sounds better than the system on my 08 SANTE.

AllKillaNofilla
06-02-2009, 09:44 PM
I just ordered 4 kicker km620 6.5s for the inside and a sony CDX-M50IP for the head unit. Haven t decided on the tower speakers yet any suggestions?? I know for a fact that a JL marine amp is in my future just not sure on the tower speakers there is sooo many to chose from.. Do you have pictures of the sub in your boat & the amp or amps im trying to get a idea for mounting but haven't decided. Think I should install a subwoofer does it make a big difference when your moving?? Also do you have any capacitors or extra battery's helping out the alternator??

wotan2525
06-02-2009, 10:00 PM
Once you hear a system with a sub you'll never go back. Seriously. A 10" under the console with the amp mounted right on top of it would be a great solution.

michael hunter
06-03-2009, 12:32 AM
What wotan said is correct. The sub makes the system. Ill send pics tomorrow.
The service manager at my dealer said to get digital amps his are very small in size and still put out a lot of power and not too bad on price Ill post with pics tomorrow.

Is there anyway to pay you for a copy of the owners manual or fax it to me. It would be great to get my hands on them. I could paypal you some money for the hassle it would be much appreciated....
