I picked up a high hour salt water boat this year to restore. I wanted a v drive in the worst way and got the cheapest one in the country. Here is the before:https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201004/3414255c0a0e19aa913a2f3085016fb6.jpg

I got it home and dug right in. Needed the heads rebuilt and manifolds put on before it would even run. More pics in next post

Got it running, put about 150 gallons of gas through it. Every tank of gas pretty much consumed an oil change.

The interior was shot, so I tackled that on a rainy weekend. Well most of it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201004/d9bb6a95e416bc1a9509b7050e77aa4e.jpg

I even got to learn to surf behind it. You can see the plumes of oil smoke in the surf photo

So now the season is over, I have the engine out and apart currently at the machine shop, waiting on transmission parts to rebuild that and my v drive is almost back together, waiting on gaskets and seals for that.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201004/e8de2ce19894a1bb0c4e381cbcac58c7.jpg

The windshield frame paint was flaking from living in salt. This was one thing that scared me as I did it.. I know the glass is obsolete so I was terrified here. The frame is all apart, everything is bagged and labeled well. Frame goes to get stripped and painted this week and I can get it back together. I put the glass in the safest place I could think of.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201004/e1021dc56bbc298fb53fab4b92bf19f3.jpg

I’ll post more once parts start coming back and the boat is back from detail. Figured I would get this started. It will be a brand new 2006 with 2000 hours on the hull and zero on the drivetrain. Next summer is going to be awesome.

That's a lot of work to get done in one year . You brought a new meaning to the word motivated . How did it go from blue to black and orange?

The gelcoat was that chalky and faded. I wet sanded and buffed the exterior and was in shock to learn it was black. It was listed as orange blue and white in the for sale listing.

HELL YEAH, I remember this boat being advertised on Craigslist for a long time. I think it was priced in the mid teens if my memory serves me correct. Another forum member on here wanted to buy it and offered the seller $8k. I told him the seller should be giving you 8 grand after you sink it for him and split the proceeds.
Instead of it saying HELL YEAH on the side, it would be more apropos if it said HELL NO and ultimately advised him to walk away. I said if you buy it, expect nothing but work, work and more work. It seems that prediction was correct but I never would have thought that it was a black boat from the pics I saw. Let's hope the wife did not want a blue boat.

On a positive note, what you have done is incredible and I applaud you. Learning to surf behind it has to be the icing on the cake. Great job!

I offered 10 and got it for 11, then paid 1500 to ship it from FL to PA. I’ll be dumping about 4500 into it total. So I’ll have 17k in it doing 90% of the work myself. And yes learning to surf behind it was the highlight of my summer. I’m just pumped to have a “brand new boat” for next summer. I only ever had sterndrive boats before this. I could never go back!

I've never seen a valve seat that bad!!! OMG. If you still have the engine out of her can you tell me what the dimension is between the trans mounts and the same for the engine mounts side to side? What is the distance between the stringers in the engine room and in the midsection? thanks Chris

Believe it or not those seats cleaned up! I walked into the machine shop with the heads disassembled and bead blasted. He cut them on the spot for 150 bucks and gave me freshly ground used valves. Needless to say that man has my engine now to rebuild the bottom end. The boat is at a detail shop now being buffed inside and out and getting ceramic pro installed. Once it’s back I can measure for you. I can’t measure the trans mounts, I had to cut them to get on the bolts that go in the trans. I got a used set being powder coated now. I still need a set of engine mounts if anyone has a set?

I posted these in my v drive rebuild post, but I figured I’d throw them here as well. Transmission should be going together next week. The hull is being buffed as we speak and the ceramic coat will be applied over the weekend. I’m letting him keep it for a few days after to put outside for all the people that told him he would never get that finish to come back to life.

Hey Brian_289... I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread! I think you've given us all a little inspiration!

Question... How did you decided exactly where to place the decals? I am putting new decals on my 2008 Launch 21V and my OCD is stressing me out about decal placement. Did you just eyeball it or did you have predetermined measurements to work from?

I eyeballed one side. I used masking tape to hold it in place, stepped back and looked it over. Then I measured and made sure the other side ended up in the same spot.

Update, I found the play in my shift and throttle linkage. Here I thought I’d be buying a shifter assembly, it’s just the brass fittings that thread on the cables. They slide in and lock down with a cotter pin, well they have giant slots worn in the sides of them where they connect to the shifter linkage. 8 bucks and I have new ones coming. On to rudder box rebuild, replace shift, throttle and steering cables before the engine gets home!

I’m using this fake seadeck for the flooring. I used it on a swim platform I made and I’m happy with it. If it doesn’t hold up and I have to redo it, it was cheap enough!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210120/6abdeb5c4fc0bae0d38836a840e5c411.jpg

As soon as I get these pieces for my motor mounts it can be put back in the boat. They were way too shot to reuse. I’m hoping indmar sells them without making me buy two complete mounts. The rest cleaned up and I had it all powder coated. I’d like to have it back in and hear it run before the end of February.

Now it’s down to getting the mounts adjusted and driveshaft aligned to the output flange on the V drive. It was almost 70 here Friday and it dropped to 40 yesterday and today. The garage heater is out of oil and I’m too lazy to go get some. (Maybe not lazy, but depressed by the cold weather coming back) Maybe later this week if it warms up a little I’ll finish it. That one warm day really got me motivated to get this done!

Oh, can anyone point me to the trans temp sensor? I snapped a wire off of mine and would like to replace it. Neutral safety switch is easy to find, but that temp sensor seems to be a unicorn. I’ll cal the dealer as a last resort. I’m a big fan or sourcing my own parts and supporting small businesses.

Hey great work on your restoration looks great!!! Quick question I also have a 2006 21v and since yours is all taken apart, can you see if tracking fins have a nut on top side or if it’s a threaded plate. Also does tank have to be removed to get to? I have a bent tracking fin and didn’t know if I could just back out the hex head bolts and remove or if the process would be more involved for removal. Drives fine way it is but want to fix at some point. Thanks Ryan

Drives fine way it is but want to fix at some point. Thanks Ryan

Pull the fuel tank, there are nuts on the inside.

Thanks again. I got them all in the mail Friday. One step forward and unfortunately two steps back. I tightened down the screws on the neutral safety switch and the switch housing split down the side. I can’t win!

Did you have to replace or redo any of the wiring? Was it difficult? Reason I ask is a month back I hooked up a connection wrong on the battery and smoked something under the console. Lost all my gauges and stereo. Every shop I've taken it to acts like its the end of the world for my boat and might be impossible to fix. The local Supra dealer wont even look at my boat because of how old it is. ('05 Launch 24 SSV). Anyway, I guess I'm just looking for something positive that I haven't ruined my boat. Thanks. Wish I had the patience to rebuild something like you. Its going to be a great boat once you finish. Good Luck.

I didn’t get into any wiring thankfully. That sounds like a project

I just don’t think many shops know much about electrical troubleshooting these days and with all the new business it seems like they just don’t want to help. Did you ever look for a main breaker in the doghouse? Everything on your boat is protected electrically so I really don’t think you smoked anything. If you were in AZ I’d look at it for you.

One thing I wanted to say here about this project. If anyone ends up having their engine rebuilt, having the rotating assembly balanced is worth every penny!! I have never seen a 5.7 run so smoothly. You could put a glass of water on top of it at idle and there wouldn’t be a ripple.

And a little update on how it runs, the V drive that never held oil for more than 5 min last summer is super quiet now. Before it would whine in reverse really loud. The rudder is nice and tight, strut bushings being replaced took the last bit of vibration out of the driveline. This is seriously a brand new 2006 boat again. I couldn’t be more happy with the outcome. If anyone goes down this road, feel free to reach out. I have seen every square inch of this boat inside and out. Hopefully one day this post helps someone else out.

I looked at the breaker box and although a few of the breakers were popped, I couldn't really tell if anything worse had come of it. Finally found a local guy here that took my boat to see what he can do. His shop has a great reputation in town. He seemed to think I may have only melted a few wires but wont know for sure till he dives into it. Keeping my fingers crossed.
The big dealers here are only concerned with selling boats. Most of their service departments only do minor repairs and general service and if you didn't buy the boat there then forget it it. They wont even touch it.

Amazing job!

We have an 02 Launch SSV that I am trying to keep going. We have run it for the last 15 years and it has served us well. We did notice a lack of power this year for surfing. I checked compession and it is good in all cylinders. I changed the plugs and am going to replace distributor and wires. We will try a different prop in the Spring.

I wish that I had your skills in fabbing. I would love to replace our swim deck as it digs into the wave pretty badly. If you still have the mold and are looking for another project this winter, I would be very interested in buying a replica of yours.

Also, the play on our throttle/transmission housing has become dangerously loose. I saw that you rehabbed yours. Any advice to help repair this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and again, fantastic restoration!
