Water in the Oil

I found water in the oil after the summer, bringing it home to winterize in the fall. The oil looked like chocolate milk. Did not look this way in the spring.

Today I went over to the lake and pulled the plugs and did a compression check. All above 160. Put new plugs in and ran the boat for 20 minutes on the trailer. No sign of water on the dip stick, but it was hard to tell. I will go back over, drain the oil again and repeat, only letting the boat run longer.

Any thoughts?

That can be caused by a cracked block or bad head gasket. But, it can also happen on a perfect engine if you only run it for short periods without letting it fully warm up. Condensation builds and does not have a chance to boil out.

Check the exhaust manifolds also.

Thanks, I'll run it longer and look at the manifolds. If they are cracked, can they be welded?

I’m guessing your in Texas so did you winterize? What the others said is spot on. If your block or manifold froze then that maybe that’s the issue. Sorry not trying to be a Debby Downer but water in the oil is pretty bad but it doesn’t take much water to contaminate it all.

No, in general cast iron is not weldable. It can be done, but it will not last.
