Ordering new SA. What motor?

Live and boat in Utah at about 6000 Feet elevation. Not sure what motor to pick for a new SA. The 450 or 575. Dealer says the boat is a pig with the 450 and everyone orders theirs with the 575. Not sure I believe that but I could be very wrong. Not interested in spending the extra on the 575 if i really don’t need it. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I would say check around a bit. Maybe find some people that have other boats on the lake there. General rule of thumb seems to be 3% loss in power per every 1,000 ft above sea level. This formula is a generalization. To be exact, barometric pressure and air temperature play a role too, but this is probably a close estimate. So a 410 hp Raptor 450 would be about 336 hp. Probably a little more. That's still a lot of power for an SA. If in a bigger SL or SE, then maybe underpowered a bit. Depends on if you run loaded with crew and ballast to the max all the time, and what do you consider to "be a pig".

Coming from the Lake Tahoe area and regularly boating from between 4500-7000 ASL the 450 performed fine with full ballast and 900lbs of lead with the 16x15 prop. I would option the 13.9 prop with the 450 and save some coin.

If you are going load the boat down with lead and people, the big motor. I'm betting this is for resale too.

300-500# pounds of add'l lead with the right prop and you should be ok with the new trans.

I probably boat on the same lake as you and you wont regret spending the money on the bigger motor. (I didnt) When you're loaded down with people, gear and ballast you will need it. Had a moomba max with the 450 motor for 2 years and ordered my Supra with the 550 for last summer. With my moomba I was always wishing for a little more and pulling up a 275+ pound guy was sometimes a challenge with the moomba. Last year with the Supra i never found myself wishing I had less power. Sure you can get by with the 450 but if you just want to get by you wouldnt be buying a supra.

Lots of 400 around here, Knoxville TN. But on the new models, seeing more 450s. I think there is a peace-of-mind factor in this. Have the extra power with the new trans package.

Personally I look at it like this. I do not like to work harder than I must. Same thing with engines. Why run a smaller engine really hard when a slightly larger engine does the same work but with less effort?
