Please specify motor make and model. Did this problem start immediately or slowly evolve. How did the boat perform at the end of last season? Please list any recent service work, winterization methods, and servicing dealer, we should be able to get you up and going with the above info. Brian Raymond

the previous owner states that the Knock sencer should be unhooked, I did this, but not positive where it is, unhooked the one on the rear left head

Does your boat have a prestolite distributor with points and condensor, or an electronic module?Brian Raymond

it is electronic, with a bank of coils on the back of the motor

I am getting conflicting statements, if it is carbureted it will not have a knock sensor or multiple coils. If the motor is a PCM ProBoss, we are getting closer.Brian Raymond

Kinda, sorta sounds like an ignition control module issue, located under the coils, not for sure, just a hunch. Contact Vince, the PCM guru at Discount Inboard Marine, he will be able to verify or suggest any other options. He can also send you the needed part(s). The phone#(803)345-0996, or email;www.skidim.com. Please keep me posted of the outcome.Brian Raymond

I am the previous owner of the boat. Unfortunately, the boat now lives in another state so I can't see exactly what it is doing now, but from the description it sounds like the boat is going into limp mode after the backfire. A NEW carburetor (not rebuilt) was put on the boat late last fall, and it was the same model, etc. as the one taken off (bought it at DIM). The boat ran fine according to the local Supra mechanic who took it out last, when he dialed in the carb. Would the ignition control module cause the symptoms the current owner is describing? What other things could cause this? The boat was always properly maintained (regular oil changes, impeller, new plugs every year, etc.) but honestly, the only mechanical issue I ever had was the carb issue. Normal winterizing was done, including draining the water from the engine, fogging the engine, and putting fuel stabilizer (STA-BIL) in a full tank of gas. I am just trying to help the new owner get the problem figured out, and not hate me... : -).
Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
