Hey Supra fans! Following is a photo diary of my progress converting this SunSport to a wake/surf beast.

I have been wakeboarding for 12+ years behind an i/o in a river. Last year I finally stepped to owning my own boat and bought my first inboard with my long-time girlfriend. We drove five hours to pick up this 1987 Supra SunSport for $7500.

It was 2nd owner, used for barefooting and had 500 hours. Even in 87 it has a hydrolic wake plate, built in cooler, eight cupholders and tinted windows.

Okay that was last spring. Since the we have added a Monster Tower MT1 with two board racks. Love it.

New Dimension is the OEM tower but we needed one that collapses fully for our boatlift and also I personally don't like the crossbars.

We removed the ski pylon (need something to cover that hole!) and the interesting slalom ski racks (pm me if you want 'em!).

So we are on the Mississippi River in Anoka, MN and we (me and fam) were really worried about an inboard on a river where there are plenty of shallow spots and rocks. With the I/O we went through a prop every couple years. Buddy took off a skeg on an I/O. But in the one year so far with the inboard, we have had NO incidents at speed. Just a couple teeny dings from docking in shallow gravely water. So I am very impressed and love my inboard.

If you look at these two pics, the bottom pic the boat is unweighted. In the top pic there is a fat sac in the rear ski locker about 270lbs.

The lovely factory camper top. 2nd is a floating bimini I acquired last fall. Should be a nice summer!

I didnt think Supra made a hydraulic wake plate until much later.
Can you post some pics how does it affect the boat when moved.

Next step was the ballast. Currently we have four sacs all hidden and plumbed 1400lbs. Also an optional surf sac for the floor. Gotta love the storage on the SunSport! Two sacs in the rear, two in the front. One pump, fill and drain through the raw water intake. No pic of the front two right now. May add a 2nd Simer eventually. And overflow lines.

Hey Michael - Thanks for looking! Many more pics to come. I have not yet encountered another model of this year or older with hydrolic. Not sure why but I feel lucky!

I usually put it all the way up with the switch, then I lower it just slightly like 1/2". This makes wakes taller and steeper. Any more and they get totally flat. It is really good for choppy water, driving slow, or holeshot.

Here is a pic of the plate while I was fitting it for Fresh Air Exhaust which will go on in spring. Last pic is of the wakeplate switch on the dash. There is a small motor and oil resevour under the rear seat.

I also replaced the factory black plastic throttle knob with this smaller chrome knob from rexmarine.com. It was cheap and it's more accurate since it's smaller.

I have also since these pics sanded and revarnished the teak. :) Pics of that'll come soon

New interior speakers and fire extinguisher. Another wakeboard wake pic when weighted. Hope to get this dialed in bigger. New prop and carb will help. Sorry for the washed out colors that's from being compressed.

That wake plate is definitely an add on you still have the chrome bracket on the transom from the original turn buckle .
It looks similar to the new Supras. I always wondered what a movable plate would do.
You have made some tremendous changes to your boat looks like a wake machine.
There is a Supra, moomba reunion on the IL, WI border in the summer you could maybe
do a road trip.

Hey Salty thanks for dropping by my thread. I am so super happy with the surf wake, but I have yet to really get the wakeboard wake I drool for. Hopefully the new prop should help.

Michael hunter you are so right about the wake plate I can't believe I didn't put two and two together before! It's pretty neat to play with but as far as real functionality it isn't really that useful. I just set it like 1/2" from all-the-way-up, and its good.

Did yours come with flappers or did you change those over from supratraps? Can't wait to put my FAE on it'll look so KEWL on this old boat. I think he said I was the first old Supra to get FAE! :) Also really wish I had the fiberglass platform.

Also mine doesn't have the tow-eyes on the back transom like yours! I don't really need them, but I was thinking about a transom pad. Someone kicked a surfboard into the transom and it exploded! It would cover up those nice letters, but I don't have those yet either. :)
http://www.bakesonline.com/detail.aspx?ID=775

Thanks for the nice compliments. She'll only get better this year! :) Supra reunion sounds great but that's a pretty long haul.

The flappers are stock in 89. The SUPRA lettering I added 2 years ago after seeing them
at the Supra reunion 2007. You are right on the transom saver I bought one from the
Malibu Crew forum straps on the D rings I only put it on when in the water. That's the only time I use the D rings since they are above the swim platform I cant use them to tie the boat down to the trailer.

those pics are great, Don't think I'm gonna get a wake like that outta my Conbrio, but trying can't hurt. Maybe you could point me in the direction of some affordable bags, I don't think I'd need more than two to start, my boat won't do what yours will anyway.
I think it was your and Ed's pic's on wakeworld that made me realize how great that wakesurfing is. I've been to Costa Rica for the real thing, but with a boat I think I can do it when I want. looks like a lotta fun

Michael - Yeah I'm kinda jealous of the 89+'s. Tell me more about your model! Is it the first year of no wood in floors or stringers? And first year of official Launch hull?? So awesome. I've been wondering how your hull shape differs from mine. Maybe flatter bottomed towards the stern of boat?

I'm not that worried about wood floors, as long as you take care of the boat you're fine. My old I/O was a 1976 and it was rock solid. My current 87 has always been well cared for with only 500 hours (now 600). The former owners used it as a barefoot boat - I really wouldn't think it would be a very good one! :) :)

Mapleleaf - Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the SS considering I'll probably never get an expensive one!! If I could see a profile or side pic of your boat either in water or on trailer I could get a better idea for how much you can weight it. If it has the higher freeboard it'll be good. If it's lower like the Mariah it's little tougher to drive loaded but I think people load them down almost as much as I do.

What I would probably do for starters is buy two smaller side sacs for starters. Maybe you need to put them alongside the engine on the floor. Or maybe you can find something the right size to fit under your rear seats. That's what I did.

Then if you decide to get more weight, you could move those smaller sacs (say like 275lbs/ea x2sacs) to the front and then get something just a lil bigger for the back (say like 400lbs/ea x2sacs). Then you could have a lil over 1000lbs, with most of it in the rear of boat. You would be safer from swamping over the bow then.

As far as sacs go, once you get more than one it's really nice to have good stuff that isn't crappy. Like cheap plastic threads, bad connections, thin bags with a 2nd protective layer, bags with internal dividers are hard to drain, etc. FlyHigh ProX is really the best and is the only one I would recommend.

With that said, http://www.masterlineusa.com/ have good deals for 2 side sacs for like $50. There are ALWAYS good deals on sacs on wakeworld classifieds. Like right now two FlyHigh side sacs for $120, they are normally like $190.

Don't get a fat sac pump, they are really crappy. Get a Simer pump Reversable, easy to put somewhere in a storage compartment and run tubing through the gunnels back to the sacs, then run through the bilge and connect to raw water intake. Super simple, no holes through boat. DONE!

Remind me, who is Ed on WW? I'd like to see the thread! I've never been ocean surfing. Wakesurfing is totally fun and I surfed more than I wakeboarded last year. Rode away from 360s at least five or six times last fall. Anxious to get back on it!

Your Conbrio may not be able to take a ton of weight, but for wakesurfing all you need is about 700lbs in stern on the port side, plus about two people to sit in that corner or lean off the gunwhale (sometimes not legal). This should make a wave between knee and thigh high. Knee high is about the minimum for surfing. You don't need a big board unless rider is over 200lbs.

mapleleaf
03-09-2009, 06:43 PM
Wow, thanks a ton. I had some idea of what to do, but that clears a few things up. I saw your side profile, bagged out I don't know how close to that I can get, but I'll try.
Conbrio's got the comp hull, so low freeboard's and the swamping over the bow will be frequent, I'd imagine.
Gonna do some side sac's, and my buddies (300+) and see about the bow.
Hopefully by august I can push a 1000lb and maybe some longboarding???
I'll get you some side shot's next weekend. I'm pulling the trailer awy from the boat for some repair's, so should be able to get some decent hull shot's!
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I saw Ed G post some surfing shot's on WW. All I know is I thought I was wakeboarding, turns out the focus has changed and I probably have the wrong boat. I'll be surfing at bare minimum, and you buy what you can afford I guess!
Your shot up near the top of the wake was what reminded me of Costa Rica, rolling back down was my favorite part, why would I want to tire my arms with a rope?

The 89 still has wood floor and stringers I think the change was in 92-93.
So far I don't have any signs of wood damage. My boat has never gotten very
wet always stored inside and wet vac any water from using it.
I don't know what the difference it between our two hulls I don't think there
is much. Deep V front with a pretty flat rear.

Quick update, I have been buying some things, so it will be a fun spring of installation.
-Stereo (tower speakers, sub, amp, equalizer, ipod, tower wiring kit and amp wiring kit)
-Monster Tower navigation light
-A few red led strips for fun
-Month or so and getting OJ 3-blade 13.25x10.5, 1" LH prop for like $420.

I have been riding the Misssippi for 7 years now. I love all the smooth water one can get. I like the ballast you are putting in. What size bag are you putting in the rear locker?

87SunSportMikeyD
03-30-2009, 05:09 PM
Hey inverts Mississippi is nice. A little high right now though.

Thanks for the ballast compliments it's a pretty simple and basic system but it works for me.

I use Fly High Locker Sacs for the rear locker and under the rear bench seat. 370lbs each. In the front I use two Fly High V-Drive sacs 400lbs each. No pics of that I'll get one sometime soon. I have another 680lb sac I use on the rear port floor for surfing or balancing the wave when wakeboarding fill about 1/3 full.

When surfing I drain the front starboard sac and leave all others full.

Update time! (edit: sorry but I also posted this on my thread at wakeboarder.com. I have some nice people helping me so I wanna be sure they see what I am up to. I will post more details and pics here shortly.)

-Stereo is hooked up but need to mount amp to rack, organize wires and hide everything. Need to mount EQ and bass remote under dash left side. Need to drill hole in top of gunwale for the tower wire-harness quick-disconnect.

I would recommend skipping this disconnect. Just get a length of wire and run the right number of leads. The kits are cheap, thin wire and the quick-connect is also not the greatest.

-The tower speaker wires are hanging out so we will tuck those inside the tower and there should barely be any wires exposed. Also no deck/CD player, just EQ and ipod so super minimal and stealth. The sub sounds great.

-Need to hook up tower mount nav light to dash board nav light circuit and complete mounting to tower (holes are drilled).

-Ran wire for LED's and mounted LED's to gunwale. Looks nice. Need to crimp the wires and wire into nav light circuit. LEDs will come on whenever I turn on the anchor/nav lights.

-New prop is on you can see it in the pic shiny!
We tried to make our own puller but the threads weren't fine enough. The real kind worked no problem. Remember to put a piece of tape over the 1/4" square prop key because ours flew off, nowhere to be found! Dealer had more.

-Fresh Air Exhaust - removed the SupraTraps and mounted the flanges. More pics to come later. Attached the FAE and tightened clamps but did not attach the support arms or support bars to the teak yet.

-Attached new Monster Tower mirror. Looks very slick and works much better than the Arial one I tried last year. Quick disconnect and plastic sleeves to protect tower from clamp are a must!

-Got a rocker switch for my ballast have to figure out where to put it that is easy to wire. If I wire it to the battery under spotters seat, then under floor and to switch on dash, don't I have to run it BACK under the floor to the pump which is also under the spotters seat? Otherwise I may put the switch on that side for simplicity. Sweet switch with two LEDs pic later.

That MIGHT be all my projects for now! Still waiting to mock up the newly modified bimini to estimate if it is worth shortening the legs and mounting them to the tower with DIY wake tower bimini clamps.

What do you think???????

Hey Jason thanks for the offer. I would post it up on wakeworld and ski-it-again.com those are really popular places to look for props.

Hey Maple! Yeah I've been trying to work one day every weekend that it is nice out. Of course by working I mean having a buddy over, drinking beers and listening to the stereo while we work. My Dad is an invaluable help too since he rocks with the 351.

The LED's are cheap and easy which is why I decided to try a few. Maybe we'll add more later who knows. Not as young as I used to be so we don't go out at night as much anymore and if we do sometimes we like the pontoon.

Here come some more pics!

In the first pic you can see the red LED's near the top of the picture. You can also see the condition of my interior teak strips and the rusted screws. Sand meeeeeee it says to me. Speakers are out to run the LED power wire. Had to buy thin profile speakers to fit the depth of gunwale space in rear of boat as it narrows.
http://photos.wakeboarder.com/data/3519/20090425_0551.JPG

2nd pic we are measuring the FAE supports that get attached to the teak. Larry from FAE said because the SupraTraps are so far apart, this is the largest FAE he has made. He had to put on extra supports too!

I've been following alot of your posts here and elsewhere when I do searches. I'm boatless but I've switched my future purchase from an 80's 2001 Ski Naut to Supra Sunsports because of the info you've shared as well as others here. Great progress, I'm so jealous and boatless not much longer. I'm in Orlando, so if anyone sees something I should have, give me shout out. I saw the one for 5000 in Melbourne and if I had cash right now I'd probably pull the trigger. Soon, very soon.

Can we talk about the caulking around your wake plate?? LOL nah lets skip to that sweet new prop! The FAE looks amazing, as well as the hanging job, I don't know if black was your only option, but it's definately the right choice...

Those shorts look like a 34, I'll send you my address, I know you forgot my birthday!!!!!!

When I get back from Mich. the next day I get the boat home, trailer's ready and so am I!!!!!!
I heard loud music fly by my house yesterday, and I coulda sworn I saw the back of a Sunsport down the road!!!!!!
Had to edit this for the subcover....is it a spinner?

87SunSportMikeyD
05-05-2009, 01:05 PM
Thanks guys!

Mach- Thanks, I think SunSports are really starting to get more popular. Keep searching. $5k is a great price. A loan for $5k is pretty cheap like $50-70 a month +insurance. You should be able to add a mic into any equalizer if you can get it to run to RCA plugs.

Maple- Thanks yeah she's really coming together now! I passed off the mirror as a safety item. :D No jokes about caulk, now... Prev owner couldn't find the leak; it was the rudder, silly. I can't wait to try the new prop I am imagining more power and a boat so quiet I forget it is on! FAE can be chrome or black. Easy choice for me.

Sorry the shorts are a 32 but get this - I emailed a company to tell them my opinions and they sent me a box of clothes to 'test' hahaha crazy huh! Yeah the sub cover is a spinner they give them away for free at millionbuy when you buy a sub (mine was only $35 it's not Wetsounds but it hits enough for me). UNfortunatly when you crank the bass the grill rattles. The spinner is powered through the speaker wires and it spins. :) :)

Okay as of today the stereo install is completly done! Only thing left to do is wetsand, buff, wax, then put in boatlift. Should hopefully be in next weekend or maybe two. Teak needs a few more coats of sealant.

I am making plans to improve ballast system. First adding overflows, then adding a second pump. Hopefully this will allow me to remove some of the hand valves and make it much more automatic.

Haha thanks a lot guys that is very nice to say!! :) The boat is a joy and all of these upgrades were thought out as much as possible to be functional and quality, but budget.

Maple - I was really unsure what to do about a boat lift too. Turns out the one we used for the I/O worked just fine for the inboard. Some lifts have a large cut-out in the rear underwater cross beam. Most do not.

The secret here is simple - just don't pull the boat in too far. :) If you do, the strut (prop shaft support) will DING against the support which will tell you to back it off. My lift is made to hold 3500lbs and the SunSport is only 2400.

Our boat lift DID have flat bunks - not full length bunks, but a pair of short bunks in front and a pair in back. We put rollers on the rear bunks to keep the prop up out of the dirt. However, we found they were unneeded. We will remove them and go back to bunks. Our river is frequently running low in late summer so we have issues with too shallow of a spot to get the boat off of the lift. This should help. We also have a wheel kit on the lift to help maneuver it. The wheels stay on and can be raised/lowered.

I do have pics of the lift but they aren't great. Here ya are!

More new pics to come everything looks so slick now..

Michael Hunter - Thanks bro that means a lot coming from you! Your boat is a work of art. :) I will have to try and get some nice high res shots after she is all cleaned up, out on the glassy river, with racks full of boards, bimini up and all loaded down with ballast hehe!

We have been pretty lucky in that our boat and motor are in great condition. We have not had to do any major repairs yet, just tuning the motor up. So that has allowed me to get her just the way I would like.

I am somewhat concerned that my ballast system will be leaving me wanting more this year. It is very manual right now. The pump and all sacs are linked, but each sac has it's own valve and I have to fill one sac at a time. There are no overflow lines so when each sac gets full it must be watched and the water stopped, or else it gets real full quick!! All sacs are different sizes so they fill at different rates. Overflows will really help here.

One issue with my overflows is that some sacs are different heights. Some are on the floor, and one is in my ski locker, about 1.5feet off the floor. If it is linked with a sac on the floor, it will fill the floor sac almost to bursting (pops the seats up on rear bench hehe). I will try this year to see if I can leave it open with a different sac, like a bow sac. Maybe that would work better.

Since my sacs are different heights, and some sacs cannot get all the way full, the spot I drill through the hull for the overflow is very important. The locker sac thru hull would need to be higher than the others! That would look pretty odd. Still researching..

To help speed it up I would add a 2nd pump. This would also let me to leave more valves open all the time. I may just have one valve to turn regularly, the bow starboard (drivers) sac (400lbs). When I wakeboard, we want this sac full. When we surf on port wave, we want it empty. Lots to think about!

Wet sanding should be fun. Did some last year but need to do a better job and then wax and buff so it is a longer lasting shine. Can I get away with just one grit or do I need to use multiple grits and really take my time???

The tower looks great.... love that nav light, don't see them up there too often....Wiring's pretty clean...I hope I can get mine that nice!!!!

With regards to the hoist, I too have a slight shallow watewr issue and I was thinking adjustable height full length bunks, if I setém too low I'll just lift them til I get it right. Your hoist looks better than mine does now....I've got an old HarborMaster set up with floopy bunks front and rear, they gotta go. I also don't have the cut out on the rear frame. Hence the lifting of the bunks...
The cables are good and the awning's in great shape so I should be good to go when the bunks are in the right spot, I'm going to somewhat copy the layout on my trailer I think??
The plywood's cool, makes it a more real, your boat still looks amazing.....

My boat lift does NOT have a cut on the rear frame.

Well what you really need to think about is where on the boat will the bunks rest. If the boat is too far back on the bunks (if you are playing it safe so the strut can clear the bar), it can be hard to crank it up. What I did at first was push the boat on, then hold on the swim platform and stick my feet underwater to touch the strut and the rear bar with my toes to be sure they weren't touching.

A couple times I did crank the boat up with the strut ON TOP of the bar. Scary and not fun but it cranked up like normal, and when I noticed I said CRAP and recranked the whole thing to fix it. With that said it did not cause any issues to the strut but try not to do that obviously lol.

If you have shallow water you want the boat to sit as low as possible on the boat lift. We did not think the fins on the bottom of the boat (sorry not thinking of the correct term) would clear the bars either, without putting rollers on top of the bunks, but they did with no problems at all. I would recommending seeing if it will fit on top the bunks before taking the time to weld or bolt on rollers.

We also considered buying new full-length bunks. I found a place that sells them pretty cheap. But like I said, we have since found no mods were req'd to the original boat lift. Good luck!! I'll get you a couple more pics this weekend.

Cool, I was thinking the same thing about my bunks now (after reading about yours)... I should get the boat on there and see what works....maybe nothing but a little adjustment is necessary. My local marine shop in Frankfort, MI wanted $ 313.00 for new aluminium rubber upper bunks, and since the boat won't be there all summer, that money is better spent in the boat!!!!!!
I'll get to wrench'in and see what gives......

87SunSportMikeyD
05-13-2009, 09:17 AM
Even the flat short bunks that are factory on the boat lift have a little up and down adjustablility I think. Definitely take a look into full length wood bunks they were very reasonably priced. Why do you need a new alum upper bunk? The rubber on ours gets a little torn sometimes but we will screw it down real goodthis year so nothing can scratch the hull.

Okay well I worked on the boat all day Sunday and last night after work til 10pm. We got the hull sanded, scrubbed, buffed and then waxed. Whew! My arms are numb... I got to see the LED's in the dark last night and DANG they are kewl time to order a few more hehehehe! The teak shines like new, hope it's not slippery. Did a couple coats on the bottom of the teak deck to protect it. FAE and new prop are ready to go, and stereo is done and DANG is it loud!

My parents bought a fixer-upper house on the Mississippi River north of Minneapolis (first major city) about 10 years ago. We got two boatlifts in the water and the dock set up. Water is actually pretty nice!

All we have to do now is change the oil and drop her in.

How many of you lube your motor raw water impellors????????????????? How the heck do I access it?

wotan2525
05-20-2009, 12:01 PM
You've got the 351, right? Should be lower drivers side of the engine... follow the raw water access from the trans-cooler. Pull the belt and pulley off and you should find the bolts to access the impellor cover.

I don't lube mine. I just plan on replacing it every other season as a preventitive thing. Only time I've roached one is when I forgot to turn the valve for the water-inlet back on.

Haha thanks FF yeah it has a could hull scratches from trailering and the vinyl is getting a little dryer and we have put a very small nicks in a few spots. :( I have some Exquisite brand cleaner and it really conditions it well but I will get some 303 as well because it needs help. We are looking for something to fill the a tiny tear in vinyl like some kind of glue or liquidvinyl patcher...

The old owners used her for barefooting! She has really undergone some changes. I like to think they are all for the better. :) This boat was BORN to be a wakesurf beast imo. She was just before her time. I haven't had the boat out yet this year I actually got the FAE last fall didn't get to it before it was too cold. Everyone like the loud boat but I can't even yell to a surfer it's so loud. This should REALLY help. I am super excited!!! I will try to take a short movie with my camera.

Boat look's great,

87SunSportMikeyD
05-26-2009, 04:02 PM
Sorry I should've commented... :) We removed the factory radio completly and there is no new cd deck at all. All speakers (four in boat, four on tower and one 12" sub) are all powered by one 5channel amp hidden in the gunwale right behind the sub.

The amp is connected to the Equalizer (Clarion EQS760 very common $60) which is glowing blue. Controls all eq as well as volume to the sub. The tower speakers are wired into 'front' on the eq, and boat speakers as 'rear'. This way the fader controls how much volume the tower speakers get independant of the cabin speakers.

To the right of the EQ is a wired remote for the sub which gives it a little more boost if needed. The only music source is the ipod. I wanted a minimal, almost stealth look. If you are standing up you can't even see the EQ under the dash.

The EQ and sub remote are mounted to little blocks of wood that are screwed into the dash (only where the dash is covered by the black vinyl!). For the EQ we made the block of wood into the shape of a wedge. Two flat pieces of ply, spaced apart by small triangle-shaped pieces of wood. I will try and get a pic. It is a little DIY and not the most professional install ever, but my goal was really budget and clean.

I may yet mount the ipod somewhere. Apple also makes a small ipod mounting dock that is usable with a remote. :) It is all hooked up to my 2nd battery which is on a seperator/combiner smart relay from SurePower (polarbill on wakeworld hooked it up for half of what a bluesea add a batt costs).

did you try out your new prop yet? going to start on the 87 here in a week or two. had to find a new shop and move all the tools ect. also built a wakeboard winch that was cheap and worked great for memorial weekend. The prop is awesome I know it is a winner, but I can't get rid of the vibration. Today I will try the old prop just to be sure, then call Nettles and see what they say. I know they will make it right.

My buddy has a motor to donate to a winch but I don't really know how to convert it. Nice simple one.

We got a little 'surging' in speed last night. Small changes in the throttle would result in large drops or spikes in speed. Going to try changing the plugs tonight, otherwise thinking it may be a vaccume line, not really sure....

So I was out last night and the engine was acting up AGAIN. Once we started boarding and she was all warmed up, she wouldn't stay running in idle. Every time a rider fell it took two or three times of restarting it and then I'd have to start pretty quick out of the hole or she would die. Last year this happened and we corrected the timing and or idle with pretty good results. Grr!

Mr oppenheimer
06-03-2009, 05:45 PM
sounds like your float valve in your carb. after boats, cars or anything that has a carburetor sit for a while crap in the float bowl can get or just an old valve and seat don't entirely stop the flow of gas from the bowl. dirt can get in the valve or whatever may be in the bottom of the bowl. if it is the float valve it may start to work better just by running the boat but the sure fix is to replace the float valve and clean the float bowl. sometimes just cleaning everything works too. my 89 would do the same thing and the 87 did the exact same thing on its first run. I put in a new valve and it ran perfectly. hope this helps

wotan2525
06-04-2009, 02:51 PM
It could be the carb.... it could also just be that your idle is set too low. Should be around 1000 - 1200RPM.

87SunSportMikeyD
06-04-2009, 06:08 PM
Well manual says 600prm is correct idle. Sometimes it idles perfectly and never dies, sometimes it dives to 3-400 and fluxuates up and down for hours. It will also blowback when we're boarding or surfing if it is acting up.

Carb kit w/ spacer gasket is on the way along with new dist cap and fuel filter/water seperator. Already replaced plugs and oil and oil filter. New gas. I did not know to use high octane non oxygenated and add stabilizer to every tank. I will start doing that.

87SunSportMikeyD
06-06-2009, 07:28 PM
Yep life jackets helps to dry them out and keep water out of the boat. Boards in the racks do not drip in the boat at all unless there is a lot of wind. But I think I have them a little bit too high on the tower it would be a lot easier to get them in and out if they were a bit lower. Someday I may get tower pads for the legs. Thanks for stoppin by. :p

I have been noticing all the swing racks around now. That would be a nice upgrade. They are pricey yet for me.

87SunSportMikeyD
06-19-2009, 12:30 PM
I really think CC did the best job of making swing racks because they are simple. The MC swing racks seem super complicated and lots of metal fabrication.

Well I put the power prop back on after ACME re-balanced it. MAGIC! It is so super silky smooth I could hardly believe it. The power is great it rips out of the hole even with the surf ballast fully loaded up 1500lbs. Holds speed great and makes the boat feel new.

I was also able to find some really thin velcro to protect my tower from the tower bimini clamps which didn't come with any kind of plastic collar. The tower bimini fit very tightly against the tower, and Monster Tower collars didn't work. Now the bimini is totally out of the way, it is much higher and you can pretty much stand underneith it. Still using the original four straps. I need to make just a couple more changes to make the bimini able to fold up under the tower speakers and velcro up to the top of the tower.

I have some sweet new pics will post ASAP. :)

And now a new Bimini? You are an animal. You make us all look bad.

87SunSportMikeyD
06-19-2009, 04:41 PM
Hehe! It's actually much older about '93. I was looking on ski-it-again.com for a bimini for a long time and eventually ran across someone locally giving one away. I took it apart and modded it fit under the Monster Tower. Tower bimini clamps from diywake.com are the only expense I have in this project and I think they were $30!! It looks great imho. Even better when you know the price tag hehehe!

The only other projects I'm even considering are
-finishing the ballast system to be completely automated, with overflows
-adding a few more LED's (super easy)
-making a jumpseat to go behind the drivers seat for added viewing while boarding and easier balancing of people-weight to even the wake
-perfect pass --- IF I can find the right unit used. If you have knowledge to help me put together my own speed-based RPM from used parts PLEASE contact me!!! :)

I will get the pics up tonight around 9pm central. :) We were surfing a TON the last few days and the wave is kickin.

Man it took me all morning to read all 10 pages but I got some great ideas now! Everything came together very nicely!!! I see you took out your ski pilon too. I was thinking of adding another cup holder there. You can never have enough cup holders!!! Do you happen to know of your prop is the same as my 89? My next investment will be a 4 blade.

87SunSportMikeyD
06-22-2009, 05:17 PM
Thanks Memmer hehe yeah I tried to take this thread from day one through present. Hope there were enough pix to retain interest. Ski pylon hole can hold a beer, I know cause one is stuck in it upside down. But not with a coozy and not with any kind of cupholder insert. The best idea I heard about that hole is to take the trim ring from the original pylon, cut a piece of dark lexan circle to fit, then screw the trim ring back on.

If your stock prop and transmission are the same as mine, then yes we could share the same prop. My stock prop is a 13x13 and transmission is a 1:1.

ACME and OJ do not recommend 4 blade props unless your prop diameter is larger than 13", many new wake boats have a much larger diameter. If it is larger, the extra blade adds a lot. Everyone I have talked to that has actually TRIED a 4 blade on a 13" diam says it doesn't work well... They said it cavitated easily and hole shot was actually worse. The other thing is the new 3-blades have much more surface area. The have extended the corners of each blade. Trust me, the new ACME 3-blade props are incredible.

I went with an ACME #913 which is 13x10.5. It was $350 through nettleprops.com and it is an AWESOME powerful prop. Rips out of the hole. Highly recommended if you run any weight and don't really ski. Seriously I barely even have to throttle down and we are on plane. Even for wakesurfing it rips.

Grabs and 180s 5' into the flats, big 360 into the flats. Spent a lot of energy trying that roll. Then I was tired and tried tantrum and got laid out a couple times ouch.

Buddy landed first wake to wake (then 5 more times!) and 4 one wake ts 180s. Fun!

Lots more pics are coming soon!

Loaded wake with about 600lbs in rear sacs (+100lbs in barbell weights), totally full 25 gal gas tank, 400 in front sacs, three people in the boat.

Family shows up on friday, full day sesh's then......

Maple the good ol days are here to stay :p

Drivin double ups: Always turn right (that's already the way you pick up downed riders, tho, RIGHT? :) ). Make a VERY wide turn and keep the speed up at 22mph. Hit your old rollers at straight-on perpindicular.

If you want to keep your water more free of rollers and also continue driving on your original path, it's pretty easy, just make a little pre-turn to the right about 45degrees. Drive straight for 3-5 seconds, then crank the double up. After you finish the d-up, make another little 45 degree turn t the right and you are back on your path.

We had a cool cloudy day and I didn't feel like giving up on boating for the afternoon that I had off from work early. So we put the camper top on! Even put the windows and side panels on. Didn't try the back window though. It is like the rear side windows, canvas with a mesh netting rear window and roll-up canvas window-cover. Suprisingly it worked awesome with the tower and was easy to wakeboard with it up! Very warm inside and very isolated from the wind. So warm in fact that we stayed out til 10pm. These pics were at night with a flash and you can still see the red LEDs in the 3rd pic hehe.

Thanks a ton guys I really enjoy sharing the pics. :) S_I you're welcome anytime hehe! I am really getting the boat where I want it but I still have some plans... adding more LEDs and I am trying to learn enough about PerfectPass to build my own from used parts at ski-it-again.com. Let me know if you see any deals on master modules or multi-line displays. I really need to call PerfectPass soon and see what they can teach me about exactly what I need for my older boat.

maple there is no stopping me that is for sure! If only I had a hot water shower or hot air heater hahaha the list never ends. Then I would need a drysuit too damnnnnn! A lot of the stuff I have added is pretty cosmetic, ya know? I haven't overhauled my engine like Irish Jack so I really do not feel that I have everything perfectly tuned yet, ya know? My buddy is a big Ski Nauti freak and 351 freak and he has his boat purring like a kitten. It starts right up as soon as you turn the key. Great boat.

I lot of the reasons I really felt like I needed the full tower setup is because of what we do. We are always taking multiple riding and have many sizes of boards, surfers, etc. So we really could use space for 6 boards! :)

I was out all day yesterday and it was awesome. Had a great wake set, landed a hs fs 360, hs backroll, hs fs 360, hs backroll, all in a row!! Lost my awesome teak flag though!!! :( :( tried to wakesurf without removing the flag (I want it there all the time damnit!) and it fell in and sank. Sad but I know where to get a replacement believe it or not hehe.

Okay I got TAGGED so I guess I'll have to post another round of pics! First some fun ones of my new Proline LGT (leather grip triangle) handle with pistol grip wrap from Proline website. And my kittie Ollie hehehe! Only thing I am unsure about w/ the handle is that it has no anti-roll mechanism. May have to try a new straightline handle too to compare. :D

http://vimeo.com/5642496

Just one pass from the set mentioned above, tricks include two 360s, two backrolls, half cab, ts1, etc. I was actually near the end of my set when I started landing these. Sorry for the shakey camera work and my ghey friend Sam making fun of me. Also you can hear how quiet the boat is and how the FAE does not affect the wake, and you can see the bubbles left by the FAE.

We had the boat weighted with about 1200lbs here, wakeplate all the way up and just two people in boat. 23mph 70'line.

Wake looks good, clean. What a run. How do you hold on that long. My hands got blisters from just watching. You got that free hand on your backrolls, grab that board. Looks awesome though. I am anxious to see a toeside invert attempt from you. How did it feel holding a rope, Mr. surfer dude. Nice video and run. WE WANT MORE.

87SunSportMikeyD
07-17-2009, 03:47 PM
Hehehe thanks buddy!! The wake was nice that day. We will keep trying more and more rear weight until I figure it out... the perfect wakeboard wake... Will work on the grab hehe!

I have tried toeside frontroll which is trip flip.. I can almost rotate it but I don't get the good trip/pop I really need. I have not tried toeside backroll. Will do this weekend hehe! I can't get the good trip/pop on tantrum either.

Was thinking of trying a heelside frontflip lolol but I would prolly get broken off.

I posted pics of my tantrum and toeside frontroll attempts a couple pages back. Looks good but need more pop. I really wish I could get my trip flip to work...

Ok guys we are back from the cabin.. I must say I am very disappointed at the midwest weather. Near record lows and rainy almost the whole four days. More rain than we have gotten all year. Unfortunatly this is bad for me - my cover is not well-supported and the boat got wet. Also we don't have a travel cover so tow the boat open - got a LOT of rain on the way home. Very heavy, boat is totally soaked inside. Very stressful and will have to go out tomorrow to clean it out completly.

All complaining aside, we had some good times, sailed the catamaran sailboat it was rockin real fast. Managed to get out surfing twice, had a real good wave and good surf sesh, landed two 360s w no rope. Got it on video, will post it up soon! I only went wakeboarding once for about 20 mins. Landed one backroll and wake was kickin. Peace all.

wow i just read through this entire post and you have done alot of work my friend. mikey you got a really nice boat... i just found this thread and website and i think you guys are going to help save me a ton of time and money so i appreciate it in advance...

i just recently bought a 1989 supra sunsport and am trying to get ideas for the ballast system i want to install... i have already put a decent system in as i have two tower speakers and two 6x9's and a 12'' kicker L7. we primarily surf... i have the non-hydraulic wake plate but i took that off because i think it gives you a slightly bigger wake off and it seemed to take care of some of the propwash we were getting. i have a fiberglas platform which i am going to wrap with jet ski foam and turf so its comfy and dosent tear up my boards. i was wondering if anyone thinks their platforms are really low in the water and hinders the wake...

my list of things to do...
-new prop... i had 15 ppl in boat last week and everyone had to go to the front to get the boat on plane but then it ripped once on plane so i know i need a new one.. i live about 15 min from acme so i am probable going to go up there and see what they have to say..

-ballast... i think i am actually going to take out the backseat and rebuild it into a ballast couch cause i cant stand crap on my floor.. also i pulled my back storage out and there is like a foot between my gas tank and the storage unit so i am going to prolly build something there to if it works out... the front i noticed there is like 5-6 in between the storage box and the side so i wannt come up with some way of stuffing the ballast in there instead of in my life jacket and ankor storage...

-i am going to put 6 1/2'' speakers in the front above my cup holders and then take my 6x9s out from the spotter seat and instal them towards the rear seat to distribute the sound a little better.

-buff and partial sticker wrap or just paint it... we will see how the buff job turns out..

i live 10 minutes from the mighty muskegon river... 15 miles of wakeboarding and wakesurfing glory... flat, wide, and deep...

Hey andy thanks for all the kind words. Your boat sounds awesome! Wierd that your ski locker seems totally different than mine.

I have heard of some people putting risers under the swim platform but I don't think it is a problem really.

If your stock prop is a 13x13 1:1 trans then you want a ACME#913 13x10.5

My favorite idea of the week is to mimic the Launch and get a hard tank for the rear bench seat to sit on. Brilliant! ...if it is bigger than my current seat sac that is.

Love the pics but you are gonna need a thread of your own with some BIGGER pics hehe

Yeah this summer has definitely been a let down with the weather so far...Unfortunately my boat has been too...(carb needs work and I'm still having occasional electrical issues, but both of those will hopefully be fixed before this weekend.)

Congrats on getting engaged man! I would've came out that weekend but I went on a spur of the moment Vegas trip...Haha.

Anyways if there's room on your (working) boat, I'm always ready for action!

I will hit you up before this weekend to try and hook up. Sat should be a good hot day near 90!

I dare say the boat is running pretty good lately. She runs like a champ even when fully weighted for wakeboarding. Surf wave is great pretty much dialed in. Fun to take movies with the still cam. My girlie stomped 3 or 4 wake to wakes last time out. I was not getting the tantrum, doing my old bad habit of 'over-tripping' or trying too hard to switch edges. But the wake was big! Stupid camera died though grrrrrrrr. Few other buddies are starting to get wake to wakes, 1w half cabs, 1w 180s down so getting fun to watch them progress.

Well wekkend is drawing to a close. Saturday was supossed to be awesome, ended up being an afternoon window of sun. Then at night severe storms. Sunday was cloudy till noon then 80 alllll day it was pretty nice.

On Sat I boarded. First I was trying tants and getting nowhere. Then had a nice run where I landed two backrolls, then tried the tant again. I got kind of fakie in the air and came down way wrong. I kind of landed on the board, but it was not happening and the board popped out from underneith me. Felt a pain in my knee and it went numb from knee down. Really worried.

But today it was okay and I was able to surf on it with no pain. Will stay away from the wakeboard for a week or so. Lucky it was not worse. The whole thing it on video, although my camerman was NOT very steady bast!

Boat is running great. Lots of power. Makes me teary eyed just thinking of it. Will post asap.

Wakemikey, I think you are going for the biggest post record. Its getting bigger and bigger. Hope your knee is OK. That same thing has happened to me three times. The last time it left a pain when I walk that is almost constant. That was three years ago. It hurts pretty much all the time now. I just learned to live with it. Be carefull. Mikey, sorry to hear about your knee, GET IT CHECKED OUT!! I tore my MCL this January and spent six weeks recovering, did it on my own, no physio, but I felt better knowing what was wrong with it....( when it happened my leg was kinda numb..) My doctor's advice was to keep using it as long as I was comfortable, light duty stuff....like surfing not boarding!!!!

Yikes maple it was defintly numb. Today it is much better. The only pain I get is if I put pressure directly on the reflex spot that a doctor would hit with the lil rubber hammer. I have no idea if it is a tear or just bruised my knee or what. But I hope it's nothing I really wanna push it this year!

F_F If I can help in any way with the boat let me know. I KNOW everyone would love to see those pics! Someday we'll have to take both our boats out. Maybe the Coon Rapids dam launch would be close for you? My cabin is on Spirit Lake, it is about 5 mi north of Mille Lacs lake, or try the link below! It is a popular area. With I could just move there.....

I took my dad out for a spin in the boat and he thinks it is something simple like maybe the timing is off again or a plug is not firing. A more likely cause though is that the points are worn out and need to be changed - we took the electronic ingition OUT for a bit because we messed up the dist cap. Now we have a new part so we will put it back in. I will be out at the boat by 130pm tomorrow, it should hopefully be fixed shortly after, I will send you a txt, hope you can come out!!

Went out with Sean again yesterday. The river was buttah and hardly another boat out there! UNfortunatly my boat ran kinda crappy again. We changed a couple spark plugs that were fairly new but appeared to be fouled with oil. Messed with the timing but our timing light wasn't working properly. We are having lots of issues with the electronic ignition, so we have the points in right now. The points probably need to be replaced. I may just buy a whole new electronic ignition kit!

But after we took the ballast out, she drove allright, so we ripped it up. Took lots of nice vids and had some good runs. I think we both have some videos, so we will post up ASAP! I refused to quit and rode till I about passed out! My legs aren't up to it I guess.

iLikeBoats
04-26-2010, 11:21 PM
yea i heard about that fresh air exhaust and it looks wicked too! now from the looks of it you can install that from the outside of the hull? correct me if im wrong

87SunSportMikeyD
04-27-2010, 11:54 AM
FAE is totally outside the hull of the boat, no drilling THROUGH the transom is required.
First you remove the old Supra Traps, fill the screw holes with 3M marine epoxy,
then drill new holes in the wood of transom for a new flange. Bigger and
longer screws for a better hold (also expoxied). Note that in the
first pic the exhaust pipe sticks slightly out from the transom. In
the 2nd pic you can see that the custom flanges are wider than the
exhaust pipe and fits over the top of the exhaust.

While the FAE could be removed and normal flappers or
trapps replaced, it is intended to be permanant. I don't know why
you would ever get rid of it (because it ROCKS), unless you are
selling and want to sell accessories seperatly to another
87 SunSport owner.. Similar to the tower.

http://photos.wakeboarder.com/data/3519/medium/WakeMikey-FAE6.jpg

http://photos.wakeboarder.com/data/3519/20090425_0537.JPG

http://photos.wakeboarder.com/data/3519/Picture_0031.jpg

Here it is all installed (althought the downpipe tip is backwards here hehe).
Larry had to custom make the FAE. Our exhaust outlets are wider than
most boats. Also the flanges are custom, and there are double the
supports (two on each side instead of just one). So this should be
very well supported. I haven't had any issues yet even
when powerturning.

You can also see my shiney new ACME#913 prop here, thanks JT Nettle!
In the last pic my patform has been sanded and is awaiting TeakGuard.

iLikeBoats
04-27-2010, 09:23 PM
Seeing the way you did that it seems like you should be able to install flappers the same way? I really like the purpose the FAE serves along with the fact that it looks BA!

WakeMikey!

You'd be the guy to ask...When is the Mississippi usually ready for boating?

87SunSportMikeyD
04-28-2010, 12:25 PM
Hey iLikeBoats, thanks! I also really like the black FAE. It matches my tower too...except that the FAE is underwater most of the time haha. You are likely correct that I could put flappers on those flanges (if I could find the right size flapper). It would look a tad funny because they stick out a bit from the transom but it should work fine. Thanks for the idea.

The functionality of the FAE is amazing. You can whisper from the driver to passanger in rear bench seat while cruising around. You can converse with the surfer in a normal talking voice while riding. You can hear the waves slapping the underside of the hull while cruising. IMO it is amazing, it's quieter than anything on the water but when I open the throttle up, or turn tightly or while at speed the water is disturbed enough to let out the roar.

I boat in a river so I prefer a brass prop which will bend and protect my drivetrain / prop shaft. I was told that boats with a stock 13" prop do not gain enough extra surface area to warrant the extra blade. I do have an agressive 3-blade, 10.5 x 13. Thanks for the comments!

Shawn - Hey bud PM me your phone number again, my phone is busted (HULK SMASH!) and I lost your #! My buddy Don is already going out boating for the year.

The Mississippi flooded some this spring which brought the levels way up and flushed tons of debris. Now the water have gone back down so it's too low for boating right now. There would be some scary spots right off of the Champlain boat launch on either side of the river. The launch at the dam might be okay and it's much deeper down there all across the river.

The level will be artificially raised for the summer on May 3rd or around there. It takes two weeks to be raised. So we are gonna have to go somewhere else for a while! There is a problem with the dam this year (that has happened before GRRR - one time they could not raise it all summer and we had to boat somewhere else! OMG!)

Here is some more info:
http://www.threeriversparks.org/news/news/pool-raising-date-set.aspx

The Park District is inspecting the scour hole on the concrete apron below the dam in late April prior to raising the pool. As previously reported, this scour hole was discovered last fall. Although significant, the scour hole is not considered an immediate dam safety threat. We do not anticipate that the hole has progressed to the point of being a safety issue, but the inspection will provide more information.

If all goes well, the summer elevation should be attained by May 15; however, the date can be affected by extraordinary rainfall events or unanticipated inspection results.

The pool will be raised to the elevation of 830.1 feet above sea level, its normal summer elevation. The pool’s summer elevation at the dam is approximately seven feet higher than the river's normal winter elevation.

Here's a good link to water level info for the Mississ

I bought a house this last fall, so my boat is actually being stored a couple blocks away from Medicine Lake in Plymouth (down 169). I plan on boating there at least some of the time this summer. How have you been? I gotta get out on your boat this summer sometime!

Well that's too bad about the dam...hopefully they'll be able to fix and use it.

That's crazy that Don is already out! I wonder what the water temp is like...

I checked out Medicine lake once, I'm not sure if the water was low or what, but the launch is really long and shallow. It seemed pretty iffy to launch one of our boats in there...

And I'll PM you my number again. Definitely give me a text/call if you're going out and have room.

It looks cleaner than your toes in the first pic. Is that a aftermarket intake manifold? Does she purrr? Now its time to double your ballast!

Looks great Mikey, enjoy the ol' Sun Sport. I'm missing mine bad now that I'm back at school. (Don't really have a place for it here right now, maybe next semester or year though). Enjoy the fall!

Mikey, first off I love your boat. Secondly I'm picking up a '85 Marauder tomorrow and first thing it needs is a prop. I looked for it but couldn't see what you upgraded to when you bought your new one? Any advice?

Oh snap zombie thread is back from the dead! I swear this summer I am gonna kill it like never before! Wake and surf and pics of it all for proof. I am thinking of putting a mini keg of homebrew on the boat??? For the WIN!!!

btpack- Thanks man! It's a labor of love for sure. I have wanted one of these boats for about 15 years ever since I saw them locally. Congrats on your Marauder! That boat should be a 1:1 trans and a stock 13x13 prop.

What you want depends on what you do behind the boat. I ONLY wakeboard and wakesurf WITH OVER 1000lbs weight. Those two things tell me to get a hardcore power prop. I went with the new ACME913 (edit: corrected) 10.5x13 from nettleprops.com. Tell them I sent you they will hook you up :) they are great guys and nice to chat with too. IMHO, make sure you tell the seller (or put in the bill of sale) that the sale is dependent on a motor compression test.

Assuming you also checked the floors and stringers as much as possible? Check around the drivers seat and in front of the rear bench seat. Check under the rear bench seat too, examine the wood the bench seat is made of for black wood. GOOD LUCK!

You have a 1-1/8" shaft? Or did you mean 913?

Mini keg of home brew? Awesome! Watch out for foaminess on the rough days though, Ha.

Do you still have your old motor around? I need a crank pulley that isn't bent.

What up Sean! Ya I was worried about foam, thinking of floating it in water inside my built in cooler to absorb the shocks. :) 2.5g keg or maybe 1g.

I do not have my motor, but my mechanic might still have it, or have access to what you need. Hit him up, he rawks. Doug Miller 651-238-4698
