Anyone changed the standard bulb lights (docking, bow, interior lights) in the supra for led lights? And what did you use?
The only lights that can't be change for leds is the the H3 lights in the tower i suppose

Here is the most common place for LED's that are cheap and waterproof:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini_tubes.htm

These would be good for the interior lights in white. The housing is just plastic. $9/ea
http://www.superbrightleds.com/store/html/images/alm-x6_c.jpg

These are good for accent lighting. The housing is just plastic. $5.50 /ea.

I got four of the accents in 2nd link. Red. Will update once installed! They were just delivered they are pretty quick.

I used the LED's from Oznium in my cupholders, and the 5-pod LED pucks from superbright in the 2 consoles.

Buddy of mine put them in his cupholders too - pretty cool at night with a bottle of beer in them.

WOWZERS --- what do those lights under the platform look like in the water?

NICE!

JonyB - We gotta see an in water picture of that platform in the water...Looks like it'd be way cool!

and ... how did you get power to them? I showed this to my wife, and she said VERY cool.

Can you shed more detail on just what you have in those side "compartments" and the rest
of the lights?

Haven't had the boat in the water just yet. Hopefully in a few weeks, but I'll try to get some pics when I do. Water here isn't too pretty so they may not be too bright, but honestly, I've got about $70 in the platform lights, not $600..... I powered them through the platform brackets. I spent about 2 hours trying to get them so they wouldn't flicker, but they still do a little so I've got more work to do. You can see on one side a ring terminal under a screw. Same thing on the other side, except for it's the negative side. The string of lights has the option to power on either side, so the positive is on one side, negative on teh other. I can remove the platform without unplugging wires. On the inside, I trimmed the carpet a little, found a bolt, removed the nut, put a ring terminal under that, bolted back up. It's tied to the OEM transom light.

It should be a little brighter now, the batteries were dead when I took those pics. Stereo wouldn't even come on they were so low. Some of the LED's in teh console weren't working either, so those should be brighter also.

Thanks - not sure of what you mean about how you hooked it up tho.

What do you have in the side compartments? something IN the cupholders, or something more than that?

jonyb

I have these in the cupholders: http://www.oznium.com/prewired-superflux

You notice how the cupholders have the hole in the bottom? I drilled those out a little with a uni-bit, put the LED in deep enough to where the light is flush, then siliconed them in. There's 1 in each cupholder facing straight up. The only other lighting in that area is the OEM light under the billet Supra logo. When you're standing in the garage next to the boat, it looks like there are lights in the Wet Sounds cans because the cupholder lights are so bright.

For the console, I used these: http://www.superbrightleds.com/store/html/images/alm-rc.jpg. Except mine have 5 LED's instead of 3. Mine actually came from customdynamics.com and are a little more expensive, but these would be just as good. There are 2 pods under each console.

On the transom, I used this:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/store/html/images/lbm-x2.jpg

LBM2 series LED Module
Waterproof LED Module with 2 high flux 110 degree LEDs
measure 1.33 x 1.13 inches and have 3 1/4 inch wires between modules
The quantity you order will be wired together in a string, 100pcs maximum per string, price is per 2-LED module
$ 1.45

There are 35 pucks in 1 string. I used the + on one side, and the - on the other side. The platform brackets carry the current through the transom bolts to the inside of the boat, where there are wires connected to power them.

Thanks - that helps. I still need to contemplate the platform hookup ... but
when you say "console" - are you speaking of:

* where the driver's feet are?
* the area where the batteries are (under the glovebox and behind the seat)?

Do you have all of them hooked to the "courtesy" light switch? or did you wire them
separately, so you could have just the cup lights on (acc switch or somethign)

jonyb
03-28-2009, 12:08 PM
When I say consoles, I mean to say 1)the helm and 2)under the OEM radio and glovebox. My batteries are now under the rear bench seat on the port side.

All lights are tied into the courtesy light switch. I probably should've tied them in separately with a relay, but didn't.

On the platform, the brackets carry the power since they're metal. Make sense?

Sure - but since water is a decent conductor ... aren't you worried about
loss out there? Sorry - I just need to think about this a little.

LOOKS great tho! We've talked about LED's in the cup-holders, you now show what it ought to look like!

Here is what I put on my motorcycle several years ago, but never thought
I had enough light. It wasn't so much about looking cool, which it does, it was more
about nighttime visibility to me.

(not very good pics - sorry)

groetjes,

pat

Thanks pat,

And what about the navigation lights?

I will figure that out, when my boat arrives. (10 more days)

There are led toplights but I don't know if they will fit.

Heres some shots of my project from last year- not as cool as some of the ones on this thread, but I am very glad I did it even if I only turn them on a couple times a year!

What is a uni-bit and what size best fit?

I am thinking that the lights might not be flush with the bottom of the holder so when a cup is in the holder (ex: styrofoam cup) does it cause a problem?

Also I am with the other guy, does the water not conduct any current?

Thanks the boat looks great and i am gonna do the cup holders, not sure about the swim deck yet.

Uni-bit:

http://www.tone-lizard.com/images/unibit.gif

The lights are sunk down enough to be flush with the bottom of the cupholder.

Water conduct any current? It's 12V, not 120V.

John,

Have you got pics of your platform in the water yet? I sure love the shadow-casters
being talked about on WakeWorld - but holy moly - not the price.

I kind of like theses from oznium too (keep clicking on the picture to see it "big")

http://www.oznium.com/marine-led-spotlight/photos

I would bet you have to have 4 of them, at least - and that's a lot of holes to drill...

John - are these the cupholder leds? http://www.oznium.com/marine-led-floodlight

My boat won't see the water for another 2 weeks, and maybe longer before I can get some pictures of the light at dark....

The cupholder led's are here: http://www.oznium.com/prewired-superflux

jonyb, did you ever get any pictures of the underwater LEDs? Im interested in doing something similar.

jonyb

Sure didn't. The platform bracket idea didn't work out so well. They'll need to be hard-wired through the transom. They did work for a little while, but it was'nt much light at all.

I did install these last year in a customer's boat though:

That's JCLevoy's boat sticking in on the right side.

Here are my ShadowCasters on my Mariah just for some reference. Sorry, I have a crappy camera, and even worse at holding it steady for night pics. The pics are taken in nasty brown/green TN water.

Wowsers - those look really sharp (even in brown water)! I like the matching interior red leds to the hull. I'd say night vision stealth except for that blue flame rooster tail.

jonyb Have you solved your wiring through the transom problem yet? Do you think it would work to run wires to the inside of the transom on the bolts, then more wire from the outside of the transom of the bolts. That way you won't have to rely on the poor conductivity of the platform brackets and you don't have to drill through your boat? Just a thought...

Also, earlier in this thread I couldn't see your link for where you got the string of LEDs, could you repost?

It was one of these. He got them from Oznium. I can't remember which strand he went with. He told me back when he did it, but I forgot.

And because I feel like being a post whore, here's my favorite shot of the Shadowcasters. :)
