Carpet looks good and there are no soft spots anywhere on the floor. When we bought it, the boat had been stored inside most of its life and showed very little signs of wear.
There are some really small tears on towards the bottom side of some of the cushions. Other than that, it's pretty much perfect.

There are some things we are going to buy for it soon. One thing for sure is a Bimini Cover. Trying to decide which one to get. I'm leaning more towards the Westland brand.
Also want to get a barefoot boom....mainly because it would be easier to teach the kiddos how to ski, and a pylon rack so we can keep our boards off the floor.

Nice and clean looking! About the bimini's- I have one of each brand and they are both very well made- 40mph without a problem! (thats about my top end) As far as the SMP trailers, I love mine also- last year I did a good bit of updating to mine, but it was a little worn for 18 years old!

Mikey, how do you like the tower nav light? Is it led? Been thinking about re-mounting my factory anchor/nav light to the tower with some help from the machine shop at work... maybe I should just buy one made for the tower?

87SunSportMikeyD
05-06-2009, 07:49 PM
I do really like the tower mounted nav light. I've always thought the light wands look so funny.

It is not an LED, just incendescent. I don't think I have seen any that are LED. Even Byerly's nauti on the cover of WBM has the same tower nav light, although his red/green anchor lights are leds and look pretty sweet in the pics.

It would be easy to DIY the wand and many people have done it. However the Tower Nav light from Monster Tower (or anywhere I think they are the same) looks pretty slick. When it is in use it is slightly angled toward the nose of the boat and makes it look pretty racy. Also when you lower your tower and put the cover on the boat, it is very nice to know the lgiht is folded down flat and is protected.

I'll get some pics this weekend. It was only $35, came with some sweet Monster Tower coozies, stickers and even their calander. Sure it's a year old but it's full of boats and hot chicks! :)

Sorry for raising an "old" posting. We just picked a 2004 Launch 22 SSV last Sat. Love everything including what everyone has said and the fact there is no spray in the face or dragging getting up slalom skiing. Wakeboarding, being new, always seemed to be pulled down to earth jumping and now seems like I can almost clear the wake...Have had it out one time to the Point in Pittsburgh on Sun. Stupid weekend plans, we will probably only have it out 3-4 more times before putting it to rest for w...w....can't say it.

We launched at 4:30 and cleaned the seats, then went for a ride to Sand Castle. Admiral said she wanted to get back to the trailer before dark since it was our first time putting it on the trailer. Didn't happen. We didn't get back until 8:30. It was a little struggle getting it on. After reading the wonderful tips on this site, we learned we are trying to load it like our I/O and have the fenders/bunks completely submerged. We fussed around for 15 mins pulling forward/backward, and now I know what we need to do to get our loading time to what we had with old boat. (94 Chaparral 1930 SS).

I skied behind friends Centurion last summer/this summer and knew I wanted a dedicated boat. Wife's requirements were it had to have a cooler (like our old one does) and has to be blue because she wanted it to "match" the truck and she wasn't buying a new one (truck). FOUND IT!!!! She sure doesn't regret those requirements. She agrees it is going to take some getting used to. She just started slalom skiing 2 years ago and doesn't hang it out there to appreciate the lack of wake, but I told her when we took it for the test ride and she got up behind it that had she not jumped in, her hair/face wouldn't have been wet. (she popped up with not splash in her face). It is much roomier and love the immediate "push you in the seat" power. The seating is awesome as everyone should have a view if they want it.

I don't have enough time to say all the wonderful things I want to and we have only owned it for less than 1 week.

This winter will be spent polishing (meant caressing) the tower/fiberglass/trailer. Spending time with her. Getting her to love me as much as I do her. (Have to spend time with the wife too I guess).

Nice looking boats. I am partial to the Supras, but not sure I can ever take the plunge on a V-drive.

The 86 Comp is in pieces getting a full rebuild, but I want to hang on to it as it is better to slalom behind than my 98 Legacy. The black one should be pretty quick as the engine is rebuilt with custom cam, intake and GT-40P heads we'll see. Stripped of the floor and DRY I could actually pick one side up off of the trailer bunks, doubt it weighed more than 1000 lbs total.

87SunSportMikeyD
10-03-2009, 09:10 PM
If you are primarily a water skier I would bet money no v-drive could beat that Comps flat slalom wake.

Your not kidding a flat wake behind the early comps. Looking at the difference in hull between the 86 comp and 98 legacy, the comp has a much flatter exit.

You just can't get away from the Supra look. They are too nice. Actually had a guy come up to us out on the lake the 2nd time I had the legacy out just to look at the boat.

Never skied behind one but also like the Malibu Sunsetters but that is for another thread.

Too much fun.

Thanks....I wish the part you can't see looked as good as the part you can. I do believe everything on mine is original. My interior definitely looks better in pictures...the 10 feet away view makes it look awesome but considering that I think it is 25 years old it looks pretty good. I think the floors and stringers are all original on mine and they are shot. Stringers around the engine are in sorry shape.

And you are right about the big rails up front. I have a 6 year old and 11 year old. Definitely feel better when my 6 year old is up front. At first I didn't like them. I liked the look of the newer smaller rails but they have grown on me and not I cant imagine the boat without them. It definitely gives her a distinctive look.

Maple thanks on the compliments. Yeah you are right about it being out of the water. It was running great this weekend. Had it up to 41...thats with bad stringers, bad shaft bearings, mangeled prop...so I am hoping once I have it all in shape that it will run even better. My Dad was sitting next to me when I opened it up and he knows of all the problems. I think he was looking at me like I was crazy....I couldn't resist. I had to hear the engine at WOT and see the speedos go up just one more time. :-).

WOW when that boat is done it is gonna be SO AWESOME!! You may set the record here for oldest and best classic resto!! :) She is gonna be ready for another 25 years of fun.

I really think the Riders are cool. Without having actually been in one they look WAAAY ahead of their time. I have seen and heard of some people removing ALLL the teak stripping and the metalgrabrails and the extended window rails but personally I think it is super unique and super kewl. I think the large RIDER lettering is so awesome!

It has been completely wet sanded with new side graphics. Don't like the lettering, but I can change that. You don't see many red Supras of this model. I have seen blue, black, white, and grey but never another one like this. I think the red accents the rainbow stripe perfectly (or vise versa).
I am using Donny Bennett of Bennett's Boat Repair out of Maryville, TN. He came highly recommended to me from Supra years ago. The guy (although he worked for Mastercraft) knows his stuff on Supras and has stock of old equip. he bought from them when they went out of business.
I took it up to him on Sunday and by Tuesday morn it was in pieces. I haven't seen pics yet of the damage, but he is photo documenting everything for me. While the fiberglass is drying out, he is working on the motor. He will be replacing all gaskets, wires, most hoses, impeller, fuel filter, rebuilding the carb, adding electronic ignition and much more.
My boat had fiberglass pipes so he will be installing stainless steel with flaps instead of the original mufflers. Finish up with a new steering cable and accessories and we have a nice big hole in my wallet.
I'm getting excited even though it will be December before its done. Added some old pics.

I talked to Donnie a couple of times months ago about doing some work on my boat - stringers and floor. Is that what you are having done?

Hi all,

Buying this boat in Australia. Just been imported fromt he states and not sure what model it is. I know it is a 91 from the H.I.N but the hull looks like it could be a Mariah or a Comp.

Any ideas?

If it is an open bow I would guess it is a Conbrio like member Mapleleaf here. If it is closed bow then a comp. That tower is huuuge! As long as it is not cracking the gelcoat (hopefully it has backing plates behind the fiberglass) then you are good. Hello headroom!

wake_newbie
11-02-2009, 07:26 PM
Yeah it is an open bow. Tower is huge, bit worried that it may not fold down. Ah well, have some fun for the summer and replace it if needed next season. Do you know if these have an issue with the bow wave when you back off?

I picked it up the middle of summer. I put the tower, tower speakers, wakeboard/sufboard rack on myself. I am in the middle of a floor repair right now. I ripped the back starboard side out. I am fixing it and putting new carpet in. I am also adding ballast this winter as well. I am hoping to get 600lbs in the front and 600-700lbs in the back 300lbs under the seat and 350lbs in the locker filled with 2 Simer pumps. I also have 2 550lb sacs for the floor. I should have a killer wake next summer!

wake_newb it is a great looking boat and many of the features are before their time. You may get the bow wave when you stop but the trick there is to not cut the throttle completly, but decellerate more slowly. If there are rollers coming at your bow while you driving slowly or idling, it helps to slowly accellerate through the rollers.

Jon Sounds beastly cant wait to see those pics! Surf wave looks good, with some more weight you should have it to belly button!~

Wish my Conbrio looked that nice!!!! ( I'm gettín there) That tower is tall, I like that being 6'3" !!!! , It's gonna be fast , smooth and yes watch that bow, don't put more than one person up there and pay close attention to the turn around for the downed rider....Otherwise keep the pic's coming can always Conbrio reference material for my boat!!!!!!!
I like it best when I'm in it alone on glass and the speedo's read'in 50!!!!!! I know guys the rpm's are getting alittle upset I don't keep there for too long!!!!

Thanks everyone for your help and advise.

hey man boat looks great. What tower is that? It looks awesome!!!

It's got a sticker on the tower saying "F-54" if that means anything to someone. I googled it and could not come up with anything.

Don't worry mappleleaf. She is a bit untidy but will start work on her this weekend. Needs a full retrim and a good polish. The back locker cover is the worst. otherwise a good clean of the vynll. Replace the timber under the play pen but should still be usable.

Where do you store larger images so I can show the detail in her?

hey newbie, love to see other Conbrio's here, especially with an Aussie location! Love the fenderless trailer, mine was like that this past winter, had to replace'em. if you're towing any distance you'll wanna put some back on there...
Is that a sub in the walk through to the bow??? how's it sound being there? I've got a 10" in a box inside that storage and it's a bit muffled, may have to cut mine in like yours.......

Maple, do you have your wakeplate all the way up as far as it can go?? That may help give you more bowrise. Missed the Wild vs Leafs game the other night but thought of ya right away lol!

I'm sure you did Mikey...that 2nd period was horrible. Thanks for the thought though....
I was running my wake plate all the way up and all it did was porpoise all over the place, so in any kind of chop it ruined my handling. At idle is where I could use some bowrise, I think the answer is a '92 Sunsport GT40 like say uh IrishJack's!!!! N E way had to drop the plate back down to help boat's handling......
This winter has finish interior, tower, and maybe a paint job written all over it, hopefully that'll include some kinda integrated floor bag system.....

Huh I was thinking that if you were weighted down it might help keep you from dunking the bow. Where do you have it set now? Horizontal? That is a lot of plans there buddy... If your engine runs nice and strong, finish the interior and see if you get any bites on craigslist.

I usually have mine set an inch down from its "relaxed" position. I get a huge trough and still my best top speed without it porpoising. But my hull has that really aggressive deep forward keel, the midship step, and the shallow deadrise aft... the wake, ski, and crossover hulls all act differently. I wish you lived closer... I would love to help you with your boat!

1986 Sunsport when I picked her up at the end of last summer.

No action shots yet, but we'll get there this summer.

Thanks, Ngavdba. It hasn't been wetsanded since I've owned it. A friend of mine's dad owns a carwash, and I just used his boat wax and a pneumatic buffer, before taking the last pictures. She shines really well, when taken care of.

The interior was redone about 3 years ago. The vinyl still feels and looks new, especially with all the supplies the guys at the wash give me.

I have a set of brand new decals from Supra (same kind; the old ones are just beaten up a bit) to go on there. I hope that by the end of the summer I also find time to re-oil all of the teak.

here's a few pics. They're a bit old and with the old tow vehicle but the boat still looks the same.
