Last trip out I had some trama happen with my Launch SSV. It started fine, ran normal nothing seemed out of the ordinary (except for the temp gauge not reading correctly). I drove it for about 15 minutes stopped and listen to the radio for a little bit. Then went to start and nothing. Checked batteries, they were fine (2 blue tops). I took the side skirt off the engine compartment and had my buddy look and listen to starter. Well he quickly told me to stop it was smoking. Got towed back to dock and brought it in today to work. Took starter off and it's fine. One of our mechanics came up to me and said I see your problem. He shined his light into the flywheel housing and showed me some springs loosely laying in it. NOW the question is, do these boats have some type of cluch assembly or do those springs go to something else? I know the motor is going to have to be pulled to fix, but maybe you guys can give me a heads up on what I should expect. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, cause I'm SICK right now. Thanks.

Most likely it's your damper plate that couples the engines flywheel to the starter. For whatever reason it failed. but you should still start the engine I would assume unless your flywheel also failed along with it. You should be able to just take the trans off and replace the damper and maybe your flywheel if need. I attached a picture of the damper plate and those springs should look familiar!

Would the engine still need to be pulled?

Do you happen to know the cost on a damper and flywheel?

Can you turn the engine by putting a socket on the crankshaft?
Try removing the Serpentine belt If the alternator is locked up it will
prevent the motor from turning.

A damper is around $80.00 and a flywheel is around $150. If you have a straight drive as opposed to a v-drive it should be relatively easy to replace. A v-drive can get kind of complicated and expensive if some one else if doing it for you. Does your engine still turn over and your transmission? You want to check this to make the were not the cause of the damper plate breaking. You also want to get the same style/shape damper plate that is in the picture i gave you. The triangle shaped ones are for lower horsepower ratings.

All back together and ready for weekend. I really need to start reading up in here, cause you boys know a lot about maintenance and repair. I would like to buff the gelcoat out next, like with a rubbing compound or wax. Any suggestions or just do a search? Thanks for the info guys. I read and converse a lot on my cadillac forums. I will be on here now.

is that you giving the #1 sign? lol

you probably know more about vdrives than alot of us, at least me. congrats on a successful, fairly major project pulling the engine. not for the weak of heart.

buffing the gel has been discussed a few times but mostly with the old boats. you can probably get away with more of a polish than compounding...depends on how faded it is. if it's not bad, i'd use Finesse-It followed by wax.
