I NEED your guys' help, I want to buy a 1987 supra TS6M that has 880 hours on it. It been well cared for and maintained with only two owners. Is this a high hour boat? I'm I looking to buy something that needs rebuilding? I am paying pretty top dollar for it. THANKS!

Thats the million dollar question. Lots a varables if its been well taken care of you should be alright. Have them take you out on the water. See how it runs. Be anal about it. Check the plugs, see what they look like, check the oil. Things like that. Piece of mind goes a long way. Lots of us on here with 80's supra's with original motors still running strong.

I would be more concerned with how tight the transmission is (make sure there is no slip-out when taking off)...880 hrs on an original engine, doesnt seem all that bad especially if it appears to have been serviced regularly. As far as the Life of the motor, they are pretty strong with fairly low maintenance.

I have heard 2000 hours or more before rebuilding. It depends on how its used and
maintained . Mine has 700 hours and has had synthetic oil since break in. I have
never even had a leak, still runs strong.

Yeah, I'd want a water test, Hunter and Hema are right, if you can find an '80's Supra that's been well maintained you should be able to several years or more out of it without any trouble.

One thing I would be thorough about is the condition of the floor..check all the bilge compartments as for forward and back as you can for signs of cracked fiberglass and rotten wood, Supra's pre '92 came with fiberglass incased wood floor's and stringer's, very prone to rot over time....
Hope you find the Supra you're looking for, they're great boat's.....

I have 890 hours on my 87 saltare. Seems to run strong, real strong. I have never added oil except oil changes. I have a friend with a 2000 Supra launch with over 2500 hours on it. Still running good.

Yeah - from my experience and what I've been told about a boat from the mid 80's, the 351W is a solid choice. With proper maintenance the motor should last as long as the rest of the boat.

I have 1200 hours on a '06 21V with the 325 Indmar. It still runs like new. Oil changed every 50 hours. Trans and V drive every 100 hours. Impeller every 6 months ( we ride all year) plugs/wires etc. every 12 months. I bought this boat new in September 2006.

I know of a couple of 80 model boats with 2000+ hours that are out and running every weekend.

I figured at 1200 hours X 20 mph avg. = May be like 24000 miles on a truck pulling a loaded trailer.
