The gauge works fine when out of water, but as soon as put in the water and drive the gauge will only show either fully down or fully up, nothing in between... Any ideas?

Yeah my 09 Sunsport SSV does the same thing, dealer says you need to replace the gauge. I plan to order it and doing my self have not fixed it yet.

Probably some sort of sensor near the trim plate or pump that reads position. It should work on resistance. I'd read the resistance to get a range and see if it travels that range smoothly or abruptly. If it's smooth out of the water (when the gauge works normally) but abruptly changes with little or no inbetween while in the water, the sending unit is bad. If the resistance goes smoothly through the range in the water it's the gauge. ... It's probably the sending unit. Or I have no idea how it works and I've got it all wrong. Maybe someone more familiar with this setup will chime in.
