Cuts off when going

I took a 94 mile trip over the weekend on my 2001 launch it took 33 gallons of gas to get there since my fuel gauge dosnt work i put in 15 gallons half way there which filled it up . When i got to the marina i had use 33 gallons of gas so i figured there was no need to pour what was in my cans in the boat on the way home but the boat cut off about 20 miles short of home . So i poured in 5 gallons and made it about 15 miles and it cut off again . So i put in another 5 gallons . I looked at the tank today and it is almost 1/4 full so i wasnt out of gas . Any idea why it was cuttting off when it gets low ?

I had this problem and it ended up being a bad ignition key switch, it would drop power to the coil and the engine would die.
