Well this boat proved to me its worthy of putting some money into it so here it goes from start to finish,, That is when ever it gets finished! 350 hours - 351 - SMP trailer was hammerd and it has 2 soft spots n the floor so I used it till the end of summer and put some serious hours into re fabing the trailer with new metal, fenders, wood, carpet, led lighting, base coat/clear and i am in search for some aftermarket wheels!!

We purchased it mid august just to see if we liked inboards and turns out it was like driving a corvette on water compared to my celebrity status 201 cuddy, anyway

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22345274/372371987.jpg

NOTICE that Beat up trailer!! It took me about 300$ in steel and another $200 in led lighting + new wiring + new rollers + base coat/Clear coat and looks good as new now, Just need to upgrade the wheels and tires! We had to cut off both sides completly and fab the new metal in presses, Grind-Weld-Primer- Paint and purchased new fenders! All in All everything worked out great!

No soft spots in the floor? Personally I would do a couple other major items before I painted her lol like dual battery with SurePower seperator relay, board racks, mirror and ballast. Ballast project can get spendy quick. Lots of parts add up. I mean naturally if its in the budget, all those things are gonna look SIICK! :) Personally I've gotta play it pretty tight. Stereo bumps but I worked to keep the price down a lot. Lookin good!

Yeah there is 2 soft spots that need fixed, I think im just going to redo the entire floor since Ive got it this far! I bought board racks and wake surf rack + new wakeskate and wake surf boards which I keep near my computer to motivate me over the winter to get this project done!

Oh and epoxy boards (inland surfer, phase5) will fit in most standard board racks but foam boards (LF custom, Shred Stixx, etc) will only fit in dedicated surf rack.

So what are your plans for the interior ballast and such. I like the wood they used on these boats your scrapping yours? Maybe you could send it to me especially the teak over the window frame I think that's pretty sweet. I'd like to varnish all the teak on my boat and then get a wrap that looks like wood panelling on the older vehicles, maybe get one of those grand wagoneers for it to roll behind.

Yeah I think your idea would be pretty cool actaully, As far as the teak im putting it on ebay and if it sells to someone that needs it great, IF not then ill put it up in the rafters of the garage or give it to someone for the cost of shipping, AS far as interior ballasts Ive been doing some research and plan on plumbing one into the rear locker and after I tear the floor up Ill see what I can do under there Along with up under the front storage areas! Im basically just playing it by day and with our newborn im lucky to work on it once a week!

I just used our fork lift rated at 2500 lbs and cut some 2x4's for reinforcments of the gun whales and it worked like a CHARM! After we sat it down and unhooked it we just have 4 people carry it over to the side of the shop and sat it down and I just braced it so nothing sags! This was EASY and CHEAP method of removing the top with out any issues,

Now that the top is off its GAME ON! More pics to come as the progress continues

Yeah it took a little trial and error to figure out how to lift it and support it with out issues but once we figured it out it was pretty smooth from there on! Once we put it on the ground I just reinforced the gunwhales and supported the nose and rear with 2x4's and 4 of us just carried it over to the side of our shop and coverd it up! I would have pictures but I Probally will not be untarping it for another month or so depending on how fast I can get this all done! Im actaully really stressed out over this because I just sent the check for the dock space and now im on a serious time frame to complete this! haha

I watched them over and over on ebay till I got a deal,,,I believe the only reason I got it for a good price was because they listed 3 in a row and I bought the 3rd one and the other 2 went for 800+ shippings so I actaully got it for599 + Shipping which equaled 800!

I found a local marina that would do my stringers and floor for 1800$ since I have it allready separated but he all ready has so many of these that he can not get to mine till next fall! lol i can't win! I had to pull the boat outside and it freaking snowed 22 inchs and another 8-10 inches on the way so im never going to get it working on it!! Im trying to find an easy way out but I guess im just going to have to go for it

When I sent out the check to the marina for my dock space my nerves got shot !! lol After he gets this part of it done and I put it back together I still got a lot of work so Im taking it to him with in the next 2 weeks

Keel Rollers I believe the term is for them, One in the front - middle - rear! I don't believe that that the boat touches the rear or middle one but it rests on the front! My boat rests on bunks which was replaced to

Were those pics in the shop of the guy in Pittsburgh? Did he support the bottom of the hull good before removing the stringers? Everyone else I've seen do the stringer job has not removed all of the stringers at once because they don't want the hull to lose it's original shape. I would definately talk to the guy about that.

chautauquasun
03-10-2010, 06:56 PM
I shouldnt really speak for dshaft but know a little about his boat because Chris at CK fiberglass and canvas is doing my stringers as well. Dshaft had already taken his completely apart and removed all of the stringers before taking it to Chris. I know with my rebuild that Chris is doing one side at a time. so that he can ensure everything lines up and keeps structure to the hull. Not sure if he supported dshafts but Chris knows what he is doing and I am sure it will turn out very nice regardless. Chris takes a lot of pride in his work and really is good at it. Those pics I believe are in dshafts garage.

Actaully I dropped it off with the stringers and motor in it so he could take measurements and he also has a carpenter come in the measure and cut out the New stringers out so its all gravy from here other then grinding the rest of whats left of the old stringer's

03-11-2010, 03:17 PM

Went and saw the boat today and everything looked good, I didn't want the pylon anymore so it was cut off since it wouldn't budge! That SOB is solid aluminum and I bet you it weighs at least 25lbs!

You will love it without the pylon it is much roomier for the driver and passanger, and you can actually have a 3rd person sit in the middle too! Not to mention it makes sitting on the doghouse much nicer.

Almost done! So is there going to be any cuts in the floor for the ski pole? Access to the bilge?

I see the back section has a 1/2 overlap and then it's open for the removable section of floor back there. Pretty much the only way to do that, as far as I've seen.

Now comes the next big question, My plan was to paint it and have it updated to looking like the 05 scheme, After everybody beating it in my ear to just buff it and add a decal my mind is thrown off, I got 3 options and I got to pick one asap to keep this project rolling,

A: Paint the upper deck bright white - paint lower portion from rub rail black down to above the factory oem stripe then paint a gray stripe and add supra decals

B: Leave it stock, Just buff it and add a different stripe and swoosh

C: Paint the top bright white - then from the rub rail down just get a wrap

Okie Boarder
04-08-2010, 12:01 PM
I'd be in for B too.

Bottom line is you should do what you want. Updated looks good and classic looks good, depending on personal taste.

dusty2221
04-08-2010, 12:08 PM
I'd go with A solely because once that's done no one will believe it's as old as it is. I think it would look great with a modern scheme on it

dshaff24
04-08-2010, 05:46 PM
I know im probally going to go with my original plan but I like to hear ya or na's and opinions or experiences,

I really want to update it with paint but everyone keeps telling me that its just not like gel coat but yet it is boat paint made by interlux which isSpray or roll on or Imron which is spray on yet deadly , And then there is primer - base - clear which If you watch them you tube video's there is a lot of shops painting boats that way! In fact at the last boat show there was 3 custom boats there and he was trying to get his business out and I talked to him about base coat / clear coat and he said thats all they use and the boats looked sweet! What sucks is Im running out of time If I want to have this boat in the water and done by june some time

chautauquasun
04-08-2010, 10:07 PM
you should go with A...because I am leaving my stock or as my son likes to call it old school. I want to see what A looks like then decide if i want to remake mine to look like A.

csuggs
04-09-2010, 07:51 AM
I'm going with what Jim calls "modernized retro" or an updated old-school kind of look - the upgrades are there, but at first glance it looks like the original deal. But like someone said, you gotta do what makes you happy - there are countless possibilities!

dshaff24
04-16-2010, 12:14 AM
to be honest with you all, Summer is coming fast and Im worried about painting this boat so Ive been trying to come up with some kind of scheme that I could pull off with the factory blue, Since I just dropped off the window framing to get it powdercoated black and the windows just got tinted 20 percent, I was looking at misc pics on the net and Im thinking of powdercoating the tower black, I all ready orderd black carpet, I might have to change up my whole interior if I do it this way to a darker shade of white and maybe black and light blue stripes and say Remove that old rainbow stripe and still add the newer supra swoosh that is in the back of 05ish launches with maybe a black and light blue line that follows where the old Ugly stripe is!

My brain has been going through options like crazy because there is nothing better then backing your boat down the ramp and firing your boat up for the first time of the season!!

Now i removed my front stainless hand rails and plan to come up with some kind of fillers. When I was going to paint it that was easy but if I don't paint it and just buff it im looking into some kind of flat cap with nut on bottom, Ill burn that bridge soon!

My biggest problem with this boat is how yellowish white the interior gel coat is, No matter what happens im not having that so im still looking into painting it but just the inside a lighter white even if its the same shade as the outside white!

So many things to think about in so little time! I still haven't picked out exactly what guages I want but Im hoping they don't need any kind of new sending units!

So what do you think of the windows tinted, window frame powdercoated black, tower powdercoated black, black steering wheel either aftermarket or oem 87+. new rear swoosh logo's with a light blue and black stripe that would mock the rainbow one just smaller,

This is my new idea so what do you think? Im going to do what ever I want but like before I just like ideas or if it sounds stupid what would you change? When this boat is done I know no matter what I do its going to be sweet! I got a ton of brain storming into it!

I kind of like your new idea. That would probably look pretty good.

Well It turned out I was going to remove the whole old rainbow stripe but I might keep the blue section of it, Then maybe add black to it

Anyway, Today I got a chance to put 12 hours into just the boat so I got a few things done

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22718017/385904001.jpg

Removed the ugly stripe and buffed the left side! All I got to say is getting that stripe off and cleaning up the sticker residue was a Pain!

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22718017/385904002.jpg

I actaully like the way this is looking after its been Buffed out! I still might remove the blue to but Im going to check out my options with new style decals then worry about it, If I keep it im going to add a black stripe to it and try and get a black outline around the rear swoosh

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22718017/385903999.jpg

Im really happy with how the boat really cleaned up! What sucks is I couldn 't get to where the wheel well was to buff it, Anybody come up with a solution for that yet?

I also repainted everything on my motor to make it look like new again! This took some time since I had to remove a lot of parts and mask off a lot of things! All in all it looks like new to me and I got a chance to install the new High Tq starter and acc belts,

Wow, she looks all nice & shiney. Tough call on how to finish the scheme. These old Supra's were ahead of their time in styling - so can't go wrong with keeping it retro or updating the look. Great thing is you get to customize her to your liking.

What kind of surface prep and paint did you use on the engine?

dshaff24
04-19-2010, 07:44 PM
tear down - mask - scuff - wipe down with preping solvent - paint - unmask - assemble!

Im adding a black stripe to the blue stripe, Then If I get a chance tomarrow im going to take the tower to get powdercoated and the drivers seat base,

I was thinking aboutpowercoating the tie downs and gas cap and lift eye's but thats still up in the aire

New scheme is Light Blue - White - Black In my opinion It takes 3 colors to make something look good!

So I got another 12 hours of working on the boat but It was nothing worth taking pics of. All though I did get a ton of my parts come in for me to start on - carpeting - lighting - stereo stuff - and this steering wheel! I believe Jason fron on here had the same one and I liked it,
http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22718017/386601126.jpg

Anyway I powdercoated the shifter base since the paint flaked on it and the tower is disassembled and ready to take to get powdercoated!

So as of now im looking for Guages - cheaper led lights that shoot out the back of the hull in the water - im starting to think of what size fat sacs go where

Where did ya find a cnc knob at? And did it just screw on or you have to fab something to work? It wasn't in my plans but im definitly down for one! Now on LED"S i been on a few different websites that offer a ton of options, Im just sick of ordering stuff! I just got back from the interior shop to change my interior colors to off white - Black center stripes - Light blue outside stripes all on black carpet and I had the gauge panel redone in black and the panel below! Ill update pics probally next week

Put 3 coats of resin down b4 I lay the carpet on thursday, After the carpet gets layed and I mount the bulletlines rear transom lighting then comes Misc wiring and Led lights for in the boat and then finally the top cap!

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1329/6245701/22718017/387026897.jpg

The plywood Sucks the resin up like crazy,,But not on this coat! 3rd time is a charm!

Now on the teak swim deck, I sanded it and was about to teak it but then I thought I don't like wood no matter how cool or nice anybody else says it is so I decided to give Line X a call and I found a place 29 miles from me to do it in 2 hours! FYI if anybody is ever getting a spray in bedliner Line X is the best, Looks professional, No runs, no odd thickness It basically looks like it should have came from the factory on a truck! So That is why I picked them over everybody else!

I buffed it just to see how nice it would come out on the right side of the boat, And I wet sanded the back right side then buffed it And it came out like new So im Wet sanding the whole boat with 2000 grit then buffing it!

as for the lights I went with the 600 series, Im just going with the basic series because Im not paying 500 + for the other kinds! Tygart Lake is super clean and clear for a lake so Im not looking for nothing crazy!

Ive been thinking im just going to mount white and blue leds in the gun whales and look into getting them put in my cup holders and storage areas, I got new guages so I also orderd LED 194 bulbs to light them up to match! Im not trying to go crazy like I see on some of the newer boats because I don't want wires running All over the place but Ill definitly have it lite up

Well I got 3/4 of the windshield installed to find out the tint was on the wrong side of 2 window's but its basically done, Im hoping to get the gauge cluster piece off the interior guy tomarrow so I can get the new gauges/switches installed then comes setting the timing to 6 degrees Before TDC and Going over all the stuff under water with 5200 and the rub rail with 4200! Then Ill just have to get a 5 gallon bucket and take it to the lake for its first lake TEST! After that its a waiting game till the interior guy gets done!

Im really liking the black/light blue/bone look now sinces its all coming together now!

Im so far past what I planned to spend on this boat but I just don't care, The more I work on it the more I want everything to be perfect and Done right!

I bought a new marine clarion headunit with wired remote that has a lcd display and controls my ipod and Whats cool is I mounted it where my Tach was and im just going to have one speedo and Tach since I use my gps for true speed anyway while boarding! Ill take pics after I get the dash panel back and installed and cutting the 6x9's out was a awesome move, Sounds 100 times better and I do recommend polk db Speakers to anyone! Im assumming you have rivets where I have stainless 1/4 screws,

But yeah you have to remove the whole top section of the frame and you can actaully wiggle the glass out If you was just tinting,

To remove you have to unbolt the base of the windshield frame by removing the rubber to gain access the phillips screws and 8mm, then just pull off section by section!

Tygart Lake you have to put in at the state park or I ve seen another launch but its on the other side of the lake and never been over there in a vehical!

As much as I hate to say it, tubes are just part of life when you have kids with friends. My boys all ride wakeboard and wakeskate, kneeboard, ski and slalom. But they like to invite friends out that aren't always as skilled, so a tube is a way others can have fun too. Just part of the whole package man.

Dshaff: I didn't realize that Cheat was dirty. Is Tygart really that much cleaner? Does either one get trashy after heavy rains? My home turf (the Ohio) is looking pretty crappy for this weekend. Lookin' at your pics again this morning, that boat is really sharp! Well done!

Cheat is free of debri Its just water clarity isn't great and if you left you boat in a full day you get a nasty water line. Tygart you can leave your boat in a full summer and barely ever get a water line!

Tygart and cheat are clear of debri unless we have a lot of rain and the water raised 3-4 ft, Then you have to look out for the next 12 hours then it clears out

Dangggg new pics look awesome!!! Cant WAIT to get my boat back from the shop SNIFFLE

The law requires all passangers to be seated below the rubrail when the boat is under power so if u get stopped I dont think a large rear sundeck would be legal spots for passagers which would limit your capacity to 6. Maybe look into the hard tank for under the rear bench seat? :) What do you do for ballast now?

Mikey,

Something to add to your point. I was out with a friend last week on his boat and the lake patrol talked to us. They were worried we were listing so much when we were trying to set up his boat to surf...LOL They mentioned that you're also not supposed to sit up on the back of the seat or on your knees. The law, apparently, is that you have to sit in the seat the way it was designed.

I found this boat after some searching, looked good, talked to the guy, a friend drove 1 hr 15 min the next day to see it, checked it out, put on the water and needless to say I put the money in his acct that day.
It's in great condition, he had it for about 5 months, found it in a warehouse in IN where it sat for 10 years. He re-built the trailer. Put on the lake this w/end ran great and sounds good! Looking forward to gearing it up for some surfing. Two soft spots on the floor, plan to redo this winter and maybe add a stereo.

Well I tested the lights and took a picture but the picture does not do them justice, Between the docks is 40 feet and it makes it a little past the middle which is 25 feet! It didn't appear as though you "through-bolted" the swim deck brackets. Did I miss it? If you didn't, why not? I also noticed someone posted a thread regarding space around the foam. Are you concerned about it? Did you replace the fuse block? Did the upper wiring harness easily disconnect from the lower? Is there anything I should know about disconnecting the steering and throttle or any other upper connections?

Everything went pretty smooth.. I don't know what you mean by through bolting my swim platform.. its Solid as can be..

When you tear into the steering the throttal just make sure you keep your bold and pieces in bags so you don't confuse your self..
From what I remember the steering I just unbolted everthing under the steering wheel then I popped the cap off the center of the steering wheel and removed the main bolt and it was off!
Im not to sure on the throttal.. I remember a bunch of wood screws holding it in place and clips and 10mm in the rear.. You have to remove the whole side panel to gain more access

When I previously asked about "through-bolting" you swim platform, I meant using nuts and bolts passing all the way through the hull. Isn't it originally held in place with lag bolts?

As for bolt and nutting it.. I got new marine wood back there so it was lagged back in.. otherwise I wouldn't be able to remove the swim platform if needed!

Do you still have the front rail? Are you going to put it back on, or would you consider parting with it?

Removed the tower to get it into the interior Shops garage... Once I get it back im going to start on battery switch.. depth gauge.. Ballasts.. pumps.. etc etc.. Wire up the tower speakers so the wires hidden.. and the biggest project once I dock the boat it more work to the trailer

Is this boat the one with the Rhino bed liner sprayed over perfectly good teak?

Lol, calling it a mistake is being too kind. I heard the cries from a thousand carpenters scream out in agony and despair when he bragged about doing that.

Good to know everything else was solid on this boat. Guess he was sober for the first part of the build. Hope it finds a new good home!
