How much water ballast is everyone using for surfing?

In my 19.5' SunSport we run about 1600lbs ballast. How about you?

Ahhh shoot, I clicked 3,000 when I saw "how much ballast?" without reading the actual post, didn't know it was about sufring. However, I started adding it up and I actually still use that much, haha. I use my 1300lbs bow bag, a starboard or port 1100lbs bag, and stack a 700 on top of it.

I don't really know how to tune my surf wake though :( It keeps a much better shape doing large circles than it does doing a straight line. I just started surfing my boat near the end of last summer, so I don't know how to properly do it, to be honest.

just to piggy back on this thread,

can you surf in a direct drive? I am a little curious in surfing and I always figured you would need a V drive. Is it worth me going out and getting the board and extra sack or will I ever be able to get a good wake for surfing?

Unfair selections!!

What about those of us who sometimes surf with NO ballast?

Well, okay, I guess we can consider the driver ballast, but with the cooler filled with beer and ice, we have obtained equilibrium.

My 2009 Outback V produces a very fine surfwake with the stock G3... 450 in the rear corner and 300 in the ski locker. The wake is extraordinary when I put the 750 in the corner.

cmtaylor, I used to surf with my 2003 Outback DD all the time, but it does require at least 1300 lbs.

800 lbs across the rear and a minimum of 500 lbs on the surf side

We run approximately 2500# in our boat and the wave is pretty good. GG sac in the locker (565#), 700# on the rear seat/transom plus the GG sac (1000#) in the ski locker with another couple hundred pounds on top. It looks something like this picture but on the port side.

1000 in the bow and 1100 in the surfside locker.
With a few people water almost comes over the locker.
BTW its a 08 Moomba LSV.

Thanks for adding the additional catagories!

I changed my vote for my different ballast configurations. I'm always switching weight and locations on the fly...thank god for the new G3 system!

One of my favorite jokes to pull on a surfer, is to make the wave disappear from under a surfer and have it re-appear on the opposite side.

950 on surf side and 500 in front. All depending of course the number of people in the boat.

CMTaylor, you can produce a GREAT surf wave with a direct drive. I personally run 350 in front pushed against the surf side wall, 500 in the rear across the back and 700 on the floor on the passanger side. The wave is thigh-to-belly-button high. It is a great time and we surf a LOT!

Here is a link to a video of my 87 SunSport wave and me ripping it up!

Mikey, very cool! How fast are you going? It looks like you're moving along pretty quick.

And as an aside, Vimeo is so much better than YouTube.

Hey guys thanks for the props! We go about 11mph. I can't get youtube at work so Vimeo it is! There is another one where I am holding the rope in case I lose the wave.

Oh and if you listen, you can hear how quiet the engine is - you can hear the water slapping on the hull of the boat, and you can actually HEAR it everytime I do a big carve on the board. That is a quiet boat! :p
