need help in determining my starter boat. looking at a supra closed front bow 80 model with 500 hrs. I never looked at these boats but like the style. the owners says that it needs a part that cost around 300 for the steering to work corectly. overall boat is in good condition with trailer. what are these boats worth? and are the hours good for this boat? how many people will it hold? anyone have pictures of a boat similar to a 80 super sport, i would like to see the interior and engine pictures. thanks for helping me get up to speed on supra boating:)

Is it an easy fix for the stringers, the boat is a 1981 and owner says that motor runs great. would you think it would be worth 2k? I am mechanical inclined, so are these boats fairly easy to work on? I know this one has a closed bow, was that for storage on this particular year? thanks for help

This boat's stringers are wooden. If they have rot, then you'll have an enormous project ahead of you..Neither an easy or cheap fix, and it has to be done right. Have the stringers examined. If they need replaced, compare that cost of refurbishment + the cost of the boat against the cost of a late 90s model. Keep in mind that with a later model you'll also get advanced electronics and fuel injection. My $0.02

how would you inspect the stringers? will you know by walking around on the floor and seeing movement or is there a inspection panel to remove to see the cracks or rot? how do you determine if the engine mounts are in sound condition?

One of the best ways to check the stringers is to open the doghouse and check the engine mount bolts, if they are stripped you're doing a stringer job. On a 30 yr old Supra even with low hours there's a pretty good chance you've got rot, even if the boat was stored for a longtime.....I'm learning the mechanics of mine and so far it's been rel;atively easy to work on , tune up etc....
The stringer tear down and rebuild is labour intensive and time consuming, but doable...Supra went all fiberglass sometime in '92.......

or just search stringer and you will find a few rebuilds, i think its about a 150 hour job and prob 2 G an a lot of love

I was going to suggest the same thing. I've seen the boat and it has been professionally restored - COMPLETELY. It's more money than what you might consider is good for an older Supra, but it's virtually a new boat throughout. I wouldn't be afraid of it . . .
